Starting a new thread as we filled up the old one!

DC 17 is in 6th season with NYMT. Also former BYMTer.

These annual threads have been a source of advice, emotional support and camaraderie for those of us with young performers enjoying everything that these awesome organisations bring.

Any additional skills in playing a related instrument will always be useful.

@yodaforpresident Depends on what is in the professional score for the shows normally so there is a range. They used a concert version scoring for Chess so it was a big orchestra, Ragtime was the normal scoring, as was Into the Woods and Anything Goes, new shows develop the scoring as it’s orchestrated so there is some flex but it’s down to what the composer/MD/orchestrator wants, Cat Bay was quite unique, Armchair was expansive! Often woodwind players need to play multiple instruments to a high standard to cover the range of instruments required (I.e. clarinet doubling bass clarinet, Eb clarinet, saxes and also sometimes flute/piccolo, oboe with sax (I think) and flute with sax are others I’ve seen too), There is only 1 player per part for woodwind or brass. Strings there can be 2 on a part but normally are only doubled where there is divisi, although Chess required more I think.

Workshop auditions this year enabled them to see which musicians can confidently play on a part on their own and not be reliant on someone else for counting bars rest or interpreting tricky rhythms for example, key skills in pit playing.

Musician seats can be very competitive as it’s down to what’s in the score as to how many they need of each instrument and the various combinations. This year it looks like a standard pit orchestra for Carousel (with no saxes) but doubling in the woodwind for Tuck and Fame (scoring is available online!).

There is also the Overtures performance this year which is new and looks like additional musician opportunities.

Edited

@QualityStreet5678 I'm sure our kids must know one another!

In DC's shows the bands have ranged from 17-28 (hunchback was more of an orchestra than a band - epic!).

It's a very different experience to your usual orchestra and very different skills required. DC is at a specialist music school and has lots of friends who are incredible classical players who are just lost in the pit!

Fingers crossed for lots of lovely news today 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Ds has experienced similar. There is a Pit Band society now at his conservatoire and it's been a learning curve for many.

Gah, still waiting. So many junk emails have come in, but not the one we're waiting for!

We had an email from NYMT this morning but it was confirmation of dispatch of an order from the shop. Talk about stomach lurch! 😅

Oh gosh... not what you needed!

Actor parent hanging here, just hanging out with the Muso parents today and hoping for good news for you guys!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 03/03/2025 19:33

Don't suppose there's been an update email that we've missed...???

I haven’t heard anything at all since my DC’s BYMT audition, aside from generic email saying that we would have an outcome by today. Is anyone else in the same boat? Is this likely to mean development camp? (Running out of biscuits rapidly!)

We’ve got a second stage offer which may come to nothing but I’m so pleased for her!

yodaforpresident · 03/03/2025 19:40

Not that I have seen @doesanybodyhaveamap

yodaforpresident · 03/03/2025 19:54

Well done to your DD @soolin - which show is she in?

As it’s a second stage offer she may not get offered a show I think, but this is our first time (so we’re a bit clueless) and the email says they’ll be in touch if she’s successful by mid March.

yodaforpresident · 03/03/2025 20:06

Sorry Soolin - I misunderstood!

Can I ask did your second stage offer come out on the 13th of Feb? Keeping everything crossed for ya x

No, we got it today as they’d sent it previously, no idea when!! We checked our junk mail and as I’d seen everyone had heard on here I asked them to resend whatever they’d sent.

Advent0range · 03/03/2025 21:58

Nothing today.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 03/03/2025 22:24

Doesn't look like it 😓

Anyone else have 'one day more' from Les Mis living rent free in their head today...?

OP posts:
doesanybodyhaveamap · 04/03/2025 14:57

Anyone got anything? A friend of mine has just messaged to say she's had an email saying if you haven't had an offer yet, you will tomorrow. Which suggests some people have??

OP posts:
yodaforpresident · 04/03/2025 15:15

@doesanybodyhaveamap we received the same email, so hopefully by tomorrow then.

Advent0range · 04/03/2025 15:31

Yes me too

TheOliveSwan · 04/03/2025 16:08

Lovely email from BYMT this afternoon offering DD a place in Theo in Between (second stage casting). Absolutely thrilled for her. Quite nervous for my bank account 😬

doesanybodyhaveamap · 04/03/2025 16:12

Oooh we want to come watch that one @TheOliveSwan ! Written by the wonderful Jordan Li Smith 😍

MxPickles · 04/03/2025 16:21

Sad times - no second stage for us with BYMT despite having a show (and even a solo) last year. Just goes to show you never know what is around the corner!

So this year it looks like a NYMT year for us instead of BYMT which I didn't think I would ever be saying.

Well done @TheOliveSwan and others with good news today x
