Starting a new thread as we filled up the old one!

DC 17 is in 6th season with NYMT. Also former BYMTer.

These annual threads have been a source of advice, emotional support and camaraderie for those of us with young performers enjoying everything that these awesome organisations bring.

😁

I suppose I'm just a little worried about future years, if we seem to have holidays that are out of sync with the rest of the country. Her school are fab, but she's already been licensed out a fair bit this year, then nneeded time off for an operation recovery! Hopefully, new year fresh start, or it might not even ever be a problem and my brain is being a drama queen!!

The residentials happen when boarding schools are on holiday and there facilities are available to use. Given that private schools generally have pretty long holidays, I suspect you must live in an authority that's doing things differently - traditionally I think NYMT has had kids from Somerset and Derbyshire where the school term dates are odd, but the schools haven't been difficult because they recognise that the rest of the country is on holiday! I think just worry about it if and when! It's not generally a problem in summer, and Easter moves around so much, it might not be a problem another time!

We’re in the north east and we have the same thing! My DS doesn’t break up till Friday as he’s in college out of our catchment but our catchment broke up last Friday. We had the same issue in February for the recalls. Why they can’t be standard I don’t know!

I'd add two things. A. As a linguist I do know the difference between their and there! 😉 Was just typing fast... B. For a good proportion of these young people, NYMT really could be classed as work experience and training, as it was for @Comefromaway 's DC. A lot of them will go on to make the performing arts their career, so if schools are at all difficult I think that should be pointed out.

Definitely! I think DS’s college would have been fine in terms of authorising absence but he would have missed key auditions and rehearsals for college assessments so it would have been a difficult decision for him. Thankfully it was all ok. And I noticed your ‘there’ but let you off this once 😂 @Biscuitsneeded

Biscuitsneeded · 08/04/2025 09:12

Also, the dates for the residentials are usually published in advance, so if one week was going to be impossible I guess you could ask only to be considered only for the shows that have residentials in your holidays.

Thanks - and I see that Carousel tickets are also on sale at City Academy in Birmingham. Does anyone know if that’s walkable from the city centre? I also gather it will be outside - hope there’s some cover if it pours down!

Comefromaway · 08/04/2025 15:10

definitely walkable. Its just a bit further on than the music shop we always go to when we visit Birmingham (last time we bought a baby grand piano but that's another story!)

We were thinking the same thing @Keepcominghome! End of August week weather tends to go one of two ways! Do you think there will be accessible parking nearby too?

Biscuitsneeded · 08/04/2025 18:16

How are the Carousellers getting on?

Livingtheirauthenticlife · 08/04/2025 21:19

@Biscuitsneeded My DS says everyone is lovely and he’s made some fabulous new friends. They’re getting through the main songs and choreography at a fast pace. It’s very impressive.

Keepcominghome · 08/04/2025 21:29

@Livingtheirauthenticlife you’re getting by much more info than me! I’m working on the no news is good news principle ….

My DS only just turned 16 and first NYMT. I confess, I have messaged him for updates regularly (and suspect he’s probably fed up with it!) . Especially to make sure he eats 😬Can I assume your DC is older?

Quick question re Sevenoaks - we are coming by train on Friday. Think we may have a bit of time to kill- are there any coffee shops near to the school or is it best to stick near the station. Going to have to take a taxi from the station to the school.

Go to Buntastic at the top of the high street, near Waitrose, a short walk from the school. Nice coffee, and buns...!

I'm enjoying all the instagram footage from Carousel. They look like they're having a great time.

Us too! They’re all having so much fun, and getting on so well. Even got to see my DS prancing about on it 🎭🎪

doesanybodyhaveamap · 12/04/2025 10:27

Looks like everyone is having fun at the Easter residentials!!

Any hoody chats started up yet? Usually this happens via the show Facebook groups but they don’t seem to have set them up this year. Just don’t want the musicians to get left out cos they aren’t in cast snap/whatsapp groups!

The facebook groups seem to be replaced this year with an app called Band. Not something I’ve seen before- I’m probably just too old 😂

Lionelblair · 12/04/2025 11:18

Morning all, fairly new here. DS went to LB rehearsals yesterday. All seems good, though no actual news reported…Canterbury was bathed in sunshine yesterday, so with that and the excitement of getting started, it was a perfect beginning.
DS refused for me to be on band. So any advice re. Ways of having contact re. Hoodies and other things would be great. I assume this is a parent led thing? I may just have to refuse his refusal and just go on band!

yodaforpresident · 12/04/2025 13:45

well done to your DD @wonderfullife123, I have resigned myself to staying with DD for the two weeks - thankfully she has been accepted to the course that is closer to us.

yodaforpresident · 12/04/2025 13:53

Another app 😭I have just discovered the ChatGPT app and it is scarily impressive.
