Recall for new Musical workshops for my DD - got non-res skills course last year, so step in the right direction, well done to everyone with recalls and commiserations to all who are disappointed.

Lovely to hear about all the recalls and workshop offers. Congratulations 👏👏My DS 13 is auditioning in a few weeks
and is really looking forward to it.

Is Crescendo one of the new musical workshops?

So, first time here. DD just heard she has a call back for New Musical Workshops - everyone is very excited but we are not entirely sure what this means. Are these workshops in the summer and how long are they for(ie are they different to the residentials for the established shows)? Does everyone auditioning get a place in something or could it still be a no thank you at the end of the process? So many questions.......

I have so many questions now - and I am sure these have been asked and answered but I am doubting myself.

Our email specifically said a "casting workshop" and detailed the "dates of the project you are invited to" so is that a confirm or still a wait and see?

That's great news, well done to her. That's a big sacrifice though - a ski trip for a recall. Just checking you know it's not definitely a place in a show at this stage, though. Wouldn't want your DD to cancel her trip thinking she's definitely in a show. I THINK (but must emphasise I don't know) the chances of being placed in a new musical workshop in summer if unsuccessful for a show after recall are pretty high, so the chances are decent she will get something, but it's not certain she will have a show.

Fabulous, well done to her. We know people who tried for 5 years to get into NYMT before landing a show. It's great that nowadays there's something for people to progress through en route to that destination that's valuable and fun too. I hope she goes and blows them away!

No, Crescendo is a show. Last year it was for the sort of 12 - 16 age group as they have so many talented kids in this age group and they can't all be placed in other shows. It was devised by the company and the creatives last year and it was great - performed at The Other Palace in the studio.

Yes they are in summer - probably about a week long. They work with creatives on a workshop version of a brand new musical. It's the typical NYMT experience but you don't do a fully staged show at the end of it, although they do perform something to parents on the last day. A great opportunity to work on something new and influence its development, meet writers, director, MD, choreographer etc and be part of NYMT company. It means your DC impressed at audition.

Thank you so much. That is really helpful. She is just 16 so got put with the 16-23 year olds which was quite daunting - she wasn’t expecting anything!

Oh and just to say, from the first round you could be offered a recall for a show or shows, a recall for a new musical workshop or a skills course. Some people recalled for shows but not cast may also be offered a new musical workshop but it looks as if they are doing casting workshops specifically for the workshops as well. So yes, everyone gets an offer of some kind but if you're invited to a casting recall for a show or a new musical workshop you've definitely impressed.

@Biscuitsneeded this is her 4th year, 1st year was skills workshop, 2nd year she was cast in when I grow up concert, then last year non res step by step course. She does love it, and is a resilient little creature bless her. Has A levels and drama school auditions this year to contend with too. She certainly works hard for it.

Don't know how all these young people do it, certainly in awe of them for their perseverance and talent. 🤩

It is confusing with the word workshop used to mean different things! If the words Lightning Boy are in the email then in old money it's a recall specifically for that show. I think they are calling recalls casting workshops now, but they are NOT the same thing as the new musical workshops. However it's not a guaranteed place in Lightning Boy at this stage. The recall in Feb will determine whether or not your Dd is cast in Lightning Boy - if she isn't she may possibly get offered a new musical workshop in summer. Hope that's helpful and not even more confusing!

Congratulations to everyone! Some lovely news for many! Commiserations also for those who didn't get what they wanted this time. I think that this year there are new musical workshops happening in the Easter holidays, May half term and in the summer.... so do check dates. I know that I gave dates on the application form that my DC couldn't do due to exams......All dates should be on the website. Auditions start this weekend for us. My niece on Sunday and my DC the following weekend.....

Yes. All new this year. There is even one in October...! Many of them are non residential too.......

For everyone asking questions about whether an invite to a casting workshop means you've definitely got a place in the production or new musical workshop named in your email - I really thought I remembered that in this recent interview on Insta that one of the NYMT directors did with an alumna he said that everyone invited to a casting workshop has got a place on the production or new musical workshop, the casting workshop was just about casting the specific roles:

BUT I haven't listened back to it to double check and it's possible I have misremembered.

So do have a watch of that - or if I was in your position and that video doesn't confirm either way, I'd just email NYMT to ask! I can't imagine being the DC going into the casting workshop not knowing if I was already guaranteed a place or if that casting could result in a "no thank you". I'd want to check with NYMT in advance.

As per my DD being invited to a casting workshop does NOT mean you will definitely get a show. You might get a workshop

Hi everyone,

Last year (first year of new team) a recall to certain productions could result in being cast in that production, being cast in the new musical workshops (there were 2),being cast in Crescendo (because they didn't specifically recall for it last year - it was added after the recalls) or being offered a skills course (which they said was a level just for those people and not the same as those offered a course after the first round).

Good news here - two show recalls! In typical NYMT fashion, the opposite two to what I would have said if you asked me to guess! 😂

This is interesting as mine is 17 and got put with the younger ones! They did 17+ at the session, but seemed to specify between year 12 and year 13 when splitting the 17yos!
I shall now overthink this until results day. It's who I am 😂
