Starting off a new thread for 2025 now that both organisations have opened applications for next season!

Hi @Comefromaway , she plays trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn. She sings too but wouldn't want to be on stage!

It's GCSE year, does anyone know if during the Easter residential there would be time for her to revise?

So much I didn't consider properly before signing her up for auditions!

Comefromaway · 15/01/2025 22:30

Ds made good friends with a trumpet player at NYMT. They still keep in touch and work on projects now they are both at conservatoires.

Musicians don’t do the Easter residential, the actors just work with the MD & Assistant MD that week, sometimes with a rehearsal pianist. Musicians join the company in the summer.

Comefromaway · 15/01/2025 22:40

Lots of trumpets in Carousel orchestration & Fame has trumpet db flugelhorn so fingers crossed.

Advent0range · 15/01/2025 22:43

Ah that's super helpful to know. Thank you! On both counts.

Biscuitsneeded · 16/01/2025 06:35

Welcome @Advent0range . Hope your DD really enjoys her audition. Let us know!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 16/01/2025 08:16

Welcome @Advent0range ! Musician parent over here 👋 DC hoping to land their 5th season as an NYMT musician.

With trumpet it really comes down to how good they are and who else applies. As they are usually 1 player per part there's really nowhere to hide, especially on brass. But I'm sure your DC is very used to that 😁

This year the musician workshop is a new thing. Your DC will play their solo piece to the group. Then they work on an excerpt from an MT score as a group under direction of the MD. I believe they see the music in advance. Finally, there is a big Q&A with the MD.

How old is DC??

Yes, we have the part. 15 yo DC was not impressed with the key signature!

lol, welcome to musical theatre 😂😂😂

Hope they have a great time at the audition, keep us posted!

Yes, DC said they could tell it was a musical theatre piece due to the key signatures!

Thanks. We feel ill-prepared as no time to practice, really, due to exams and other musical commitments.

yodaforpresident · 16/01/2025 11:17

My DD has signed up for the musician workshop at the start of February. She has never auditioned for musician before but has for acting. Does anyone have DC that have auditioned on two different section instruments?

Comefromaway · 16/01/2025 11:35

Ds found his first musician audition incredibly difficult because it was online and he isn't very good at recording himself. This new format would have suited him much better!

I think the key thing is to keep going. Ds has never played things perfectly but keeps the time and rhythm going.

He didn't get in the first year, but did the following two years (including as assistant MD) & he now plays professionally.

yodaforpresident · 16/01/2025 12:09

Thank you @Comefromaway - this format is much better for DD too as she doesn't like recording performances. I think there is also energy from just being in the room with other musicians.

I think her main concern is that she is going in with clarinet and cello rather than say clarinet and saxophone or clarinet and flute?

She is excited just to be there though and is not expecting much at her first attempt!

Comefromaway · 16/01/2025 12:12

As long as she is the right standard on both instruments they will offer her whichever instrument they need a player for. So she is, in effect, doubling her chances of being accepted.

yodaforpresident · 16/01/2025 12:27

Thank you @Comefromaway - she is Grade 7/8 on clarinet and grade 7 on cello so we shall see.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 16/01/2025 13:39

@yodaforpresident most of the woodwind players tend to double (or more!) on other woodwind instruments, purely due to practicalities of space in the pit. That said, I think Carousel may have a more 'traditional' orchestra this year. NYMT generally struggle with getting enough cellos so that is definitely in her favour!

OP posts:
yodaforpresident · 16/01/2025 14:16

@doesanybodyhaveamap thank you - yes, that's what she thought might be the case as it's not a typical combination. I thought there would be loads of cellos - how odd that they struggle to get them.

Break a leg to anyone auditioning this weekend! Looking forward to hearing how all the musicians get on too

Mumster40 · 17/01/2025 15:15

Yes! Good luck everyone. My niece is auditioning on Sunday and my DC the following week x

Biscuitsneeded · 17/01/2025 18:21

Good luck!! We are waiting patiently for 9th Feb - can't think why we thought it would be a good idea to go so late Confused. 2 quick questions as newbies - do we drop off and pick up as parents and my DD wants to know if the singing is with or without microphone. Thanks. It's been so interesting to hear everybody's experience - congratulations to everyone whose kids have had the confidence to audition - I think they are all remarkable.

Sorry can’t help as we’re new too but we also have to wait until Feb to audition 😣

Mcmumager · 17/01/2025 23:46

You just drop off and no microphone 🙂

Smile thanks - that's a relief - I can distract myself and go shopping!

Biscuitsneeded · 18/01/2025 09:34

@sittingpretty You drop off and come back at the end. They have pastoral staff there in case the DC have any issues, and they have your number if ever there were a real problem. Just make sure your DC has some lunch, because they don't break for long. It's a busy and fun day. No microphones - they sing with a pianist, so make sure your DC has their sheet music.
