Did I get this done right??

DS has Arena cobra for training and Speedo fast skin hyper for racing. I tend to get them with discount codes. I did offer to get him the top level ones for British Champs but he reckons they aren’t worth it.
I can still wear the junior Speedos for training as did DD as she’s quite petite though.

I'm an adult and still wear junior speedos for racing (Speedo Junior Fastskin Hyper Elite)

SkankingWombat · 02/06/2025 17:59

It was the Python and Airspeed she liked. The Cobras look great but she'd have to contribute some pocket money towards those!

Are Decathlon goggles good then? Between me and DCs, we've tried the snorkels, hand paddles, kickboards and fins from there and weren't impressed. I like my Decathlon pull buoy (and towels!) though.

Yes, we do the demoting from race pair to backup race pair to training, which has worked really well so far. She's just hankering after something with a bit of a lower and smoother profile than the tracks as her next race pair. She's had so many goggles mishaps in the last 2 years, she now races with her hat pulled halfway down them to stop any issues from the dives, which must massively reduce her vision. She was fitted for the Tracks 18 months ago, which did solve the problem for a while, but I guess her starts have got a bit more powerful and less of a 'speckled frog plop', and perhaps her face has changed shape? On the upside, she's quite the pro at swimming unfazed any and all events goggle-free/with her goggles between her teeth 😂😖

itsgettingweird · 02/06/2025 18:44

Ds always wears 2 hats between the googles and the top one pulled slightly over the top.

They get so good at knowing their stroke rate losing a small bit of upper vision seems less of an effect that losing the googles totally!

Glittertwins · 02/06/2025 19:05

Goggles go under the hat all the time. He doesn’t do two hats when he uses the bullet ones for racing - doesn’t exactly have a lot of hair though!

OP posts:
Porseb · 03/06/2025 09:15

DD does 2 hats as well and goggles go between the hats to hold in place.

I think she uses Arena cobra and Speedo speed socket goggles.

Fins - she’s been through Arena Powerfin Pros, DMC and now on Hydrotech 2s.

Paddles - recommended by coach - strokemakers

SkankingWombat · 03/06/2025 11:18

Yep, goggles under hat, always. She refuses to double hat currently as it gives her a headache, but hat loss has been less of an issue and not one that bothers her if the goggles are unaffected. I'm sure this will change once the margins in times get smaller, however. She has 3c curly hair, which even now it's cut shorter is 'big', so it's always braided tight down for meets else she'd struggle to keep her hat on at all! We haven't entered bullet hat territory yet... I'm dreading these, as between her big head and big hair, it will need some kind of witchcraft to put on!

I will float the idea of the Speedo Speed Sockets to DD. They look to have a much better profile than her current ones, and fit the budget, thank you 👍🏼

Paddles and fins we've found a good fit now, thankfully. The Decathlon bits were bought in the very early days as she needed everything all at once with no time to scour Facebook Marketplace, which would have been eye wateringly expensive to buy new in swim brands. She's had stuff upgraded over time as it became clear equipment just wasn't cutting the mustard or for birthdays/Christmas.
All 3 of us use both TYR and Finis for paddles, as the TYR range means we can get the perfect size and not over strain with something too big, and the various Finis paddles are great for enforcing good technique. For fins, Me and DC1 use the Powerfin Pros, whereas DC2 isn't strong enough for those yet, but has settled happily on Finis Zoomers in the meantime. It has taken some trial an error over a few years to get here though, and I'm sure it will all need reassessing as they grow and develop further.
I've just googled the Strokemakers paddles as I wasn't familiar, and they are essentially the same as TYR's from the look of them (just in more retro colourways)? They really are a great idea - you wouldn't sell shoes in just 'adult' and 'junior' sizes, so why for paddles? Plus the design means you can strap them multiple ways depending on what you're doing/your competence.
My lane of swimmers had their paddles out last night for a backstroke set, and some of them were way too big despite being 'junior' sized, meaning they were changing their technique to slip the water as they just didn't have the strength to pull themselves along with the water pressed fully onto them. It was doing nothing but reinforcing bad technique... (Not my squad, not my schedule, I was just delivering it to the lane. I got them to wear them with just the middle finger strap in the end to make where they'd dropped technique more obvious, and there were paddles falling off all the way down the pool 😏)

Porseb · 03/06/2025 11:42

I like those Finis paddles (no straps) - is sized and will fall off if stroke is not correct. DD started off with these.

I think DD uses her strokemakers now without the wrist straps.

Glittertwins · 03/06/2025 12:56

That’s what like about the Finis paddles too.
The other bonus is there’s a lot less faffing with goggles and paddles at the end of the pool!

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 03/06/2025 17:45

Ooohhhj what’s the finis no strap paddles?

DS wears the DMC silicone because he needs footless ones and lightweight ones due to how weak his legs are.

These sound something we could investigate for future!

Glittertwins · 03/06/2025 18:42

I’ll see if I can find them
Picture under review so it will appear soon

Oh 🤦🏼‍♀️ I thought you were talking about fins!!!! I was wondering how that would work!!!!

I’ll look at those hand paddles closer though as ds can’t use the stroke right ones due to his hands/ wrists.

Hellocatshome · 07/06/2025 07:53

Well he is back in the water! 1 hour a week at a very very small club, the difference in every aspect is like night and day but I think it is just what he needs at the moment. On reflection I think the other club broke him and we were just too caught up in it to realise what was happening.

Eccle80 · 07/06/2025 09:46

That’s brilliant news, really pleased he has found somewhere else and can hopefully enjoy swimming again.

Madcats · 07/06/2025 09:51

Oh, that's great news, Hellocatshome. The various lockdowns/minimal swimming made us realise how much time it used to suck up. The "good compromise" clubs are out there.

itsgettingweird · 07/06/2025 09:54

That’s great news hello I’m glad he’s made the right choice to return when it’s what he wants - so here’s to watching how that develops and whether a new environment makes him comfortable to swim more again?

We did the opposite. Lockdown made ds realise how much he wanted to swim and he returned and joined a new club and doubled his training 🫣😂

Glittertwins · 07/06/2025 10:42

That’s good, he might also want to slowly increase it as he regains his enjoyment too.

The differences between clubs really are huge. It’s something that isn’t talked about enough.

I so agree. DD went from a club which had bollockings "about lack of commitment" every year for GCSE kids and their parents to one which told them to go home and revise.

I agree. Would he have got to the level he got to if he had been at this new clubs all along? Probably not. Would he have enjoyed himself more? Definitely yes. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but we didn't know and he deserved a chance to be the best he could be and it wasn't all bad, now he deserves a chance to enjoy swimming for what it is.

It depends on the individual. We have someone at nationals who should medal this year - but his new club may be smaller than ours. We’re probably average sized nationally in reality. It’s just that a lot on here are at big clubs.

itsgettingweird · 10/06/2025 09:56

We are at a big club. We have a lot of high level achieving swimmers.

we moved from a smaller club that did have the odd national swimmer and even a national champion.

But we also have a really good ethos. Very personal programmes and each swimmer has a 1:1 with their coach 3 times a year. We also have sports psychologist who does sessions throughout the year and meets with swimmers 1:1 when needed.

Last nights session we had our age group swimmers training and the British squad. The age we’re doing one of those sets where you have to do 50 100’s and the time decreases each time. When you miss the end you get out. We had 2 swimmers who got to over 40. The whole of age were cheering them on. Then when they both got to 45 and still making the time the National squad got out and joined in the cheering encouraged by their coach. Those of use in the spectator area were also cheering and clapping.

i said at the time that’s what it’s all about. These are team mates.I love to see that they are developing a team ethos and strong team bond over picking favourites and making others feel bad.

Glittertwins · 10/06/2025 16:21

Our club is quite small membership wise although we have a reasonable number of swimmers at nationals. We’re nowhere close to our former size or swimmer level.
