Ok, I know we technically haven't finished 2022 yet as there is still the Christmas Concert for some (my ds is not taking part due to his conservatoire concert) but NYMT have released details of their 2023 season & auditions here

mailchi.mp/nymt/nymt-2022-season-announcement-5919443?fbclid=IwAR2nM_B-gUzYyvEzUTMDFUt2c4RiuW5ElKjmdxG6qJIgIPS2W6owl8GY7NY

Good luck everyone whose dc are applying this year

Hello my daughter is 14 and went to NYMT recalls but didn't get in this time. But we have just received an email to ask her to do the Concert! Didn't realise there was a reserves list!
Is it worth doing the concert, or to try to get into a show another time? As it's quite costly.
Anyone on here got experience of the concert? Thanks

Biscuitsneeded · 04/03/2023 13:53

My DS hasn't done the concert but we watched it last year and it was great. Granted it's not a full show with set and characters etc, but the huge advantage for the participants was that they all got a lot of stage time in all the big ensemble numbers, and everyone got at least a solo or duo section at some point. @doesanybodyhaveamap or @Alakazam8 could tell you more. I think participants all had a great time on the residential, too. As I understand it there are two dates and venues for the concert this year?
I don't think they officially have reserves, because if you hear you are a reserve and then don't get placed it's disappointing, but I'm sure if anyone declines they look again at who scored highly and would fit. I'm sure your DD was a very near miss and I'm equally sure she would have a great time if she did the showcase.

Onedaymore123 · 04/03/2023 14:08

Thank you that's really helpful.
I think she is worried about the residential side of it...we would love her to do it as such a good opportunity and a taster into the shows another time. Yes it said 2 venues which is great.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 04/03/2023 14:13

@Onedaymore123 definitely worth it! A slightly different experience to the shows but IMO very worthwhile. Quite intense as they have a lot of material to learn in a shorter rehearsal period. All the kids last year had solos/moments to shine and lots of stage time. DC had a wonderful time, learned loads and made some amazing friends.

Biscuitsneeded · 04/03/2023 14:52

@Onedaymore123 The residential is a part of it regardless of whether you do a summer show or the concert, although yes the showcase residential is a day or two longer at Easter. NYMT have very good pastoral staff, and kids are kept very busy so they don't have a lot of time to feel homesick. They're also pretty tired by the time they go to bed! Can you say what your DD is worried about so that we can hopefully allay her fears?

Biscuitsneeded · 04/03/2023 14:56

@Onedaymore123 Also, there are people on this thread with DDs of a similar age who got the concert. If you scroll back you could find them and put the DDs in contact so that she would at least 'know' someone else prior to arrival.

Comefromaway · 04/03/2023 17:00

Last year it was cheaper to do the concert because the residential was only at Easter rather than 1 werk Easter & 2 weeks summer.

@Comefromaway I don't think that's changed.

Alakazam8 · 04/03/2023 17:15

@Onedaymore123 dd did the concert last year, it’s a great opportunity. As far as I know most of the kids involved loved it. There were 2 venues last year too. One London one Kingston, Fuse festival.
The residential was just at Easter but they had a day sitzprobe between that and the concert itself. I think it is seen a bit as a lesser opportunity but shouldn’t be really as it’s different and a totally different type of show, built around the kids themselves. There are many I know, like my dd who would happily accept the opportunity to do it again!

Onedaymore123 · 04/03/2023 18:08

Thank you so much everyone..super helpful.
My DD has never been on a residential School trip and is on the spectrum, so can feel overwhelmed with new things etc sometimes.
We knew it was all residential but tbh didn't think we'd get this far...just went along for the experience really!
How does it work with dorm arrangements? How many share etc? How long are the days for concert rehearsals?
Many thanks

doesanybodyhaveamap · 04/03/2023 18:26

They have lots of experience with autistic kids! Just be open about any adjustments or support she needs and they will cover it.

Alakazam8 · 04/03/2023 19:10

They certainly do- however in your position, and I speak from experience I don’t know if I would have it as a first residential if you aren’t sure how dd will handle it. It’s a very full on busy week. Days are 9-9 with breaks for meals etc.

Alakazam8 · 04/03/2023 19:24

@Onedaymore123 happy for you to pm me if you have other questions

Onedaymore123 · 06/03/2023 12:21

Pleased to say my daughter accepted the concert offer 😊..exciting times ahead!
Thanks for all the help 🥰

Comefromaway · 06/03/2023 12:55

Ds has an interview on Saturday.

He is autistic. The main thing he struggles with was the food. He ate very little (Tonbridge was especially bad) but because he was 18 he was able to go out to buy food from the town.

I do know that arrangements were made for a slightly different way of doing things for one concert participant last year.

@Comefromaway is your dc interviewing for deputy md again?
@Onedaymore123 the best thing you can do really is let them know prior to the rehearsal week about any adjustments that your dd may need. I’m sure they would rather that than find out too late if your dd is unhappy or upset over something whilst away from home. Again happy to pm if you have anything more specific you want to know.

Comefromaway · 06/03/2023 15:22

Yes, assistant MD.

@Onedaymore123 I'm really pleased your DD decided to go for it. If you drop a line to pastoral ahead of her arrival, they will be very discreet but will keep a special eye out. The NYMT pastoral team are really excellent, but they will be even better if pre-alerted to any potential issues. I hope your DD has a wonderful time, and I'm sure she (and you!) will feel very proud when she takes to the stage in summer.

Alakazam8 · 07/03/2023 09:44

@Comefromaway brilliant sending best of luck to him from mini alakazam who is was very kind to last year!

Comefromaway · 07/03/2023 11:19

Thank-you

Sorry, just catching up - congratulations to those with BYMT offers, I hope they have a ball! Have all the BYMT offers gone out yet?
We got an offer last year, turned it down as it clashed with NYMT - and they came back a few weeks later offering us a different show with different dates to try and bring him on board. It clashed with something else he'd committed to at home by then though!

We've had a change here, having previously been cast in this year's workshop, now moved to ensemble in Kiss me, Kate!

allhailthebrain · 07/03/2023 20:39

PS if there is a group for the kids/young people in KMK can someone ping me? Ditto the parents 😆

Biscuitsneeded · 07/03/2023 21:15

@Comefromaway Good luck to your son! I hope he gets the opportunity to be AMD again.

minimits · 07/03/2023 21:33

@allhailthebrain have messaged you x

Onedaymore123 · 07/03/2023 22:42

Thank you that is a great tip. I will email them.
