Hello. Been lurking but haven’t posted before. I have a child doing Billy the Kid - first time with NYMT. Does anyone have experience of how it works when they’re in Dulwich and have to get their own lunch and dinner. I know they say the pastoral staff will keep an eye on them that they make healthy choices but .... I made further enquiries and got a nice email back but I’m still not quite sure how this is going to be managed. I can see this being a bit of a stress for my kiddo. Would like to hear from others whose kids have done these courses before.

DalekFan · 05/08/2021 09:53

@Mcmumager

Ooh can’t believe it’s showtime for Peter Pan!! I feel so nervous - just as well I’m not the performer!!

I’m not going until tomorrow night so if anyone is there tonight it would be great to know how it’s going! My comms have been limited as my sons phone completely broke first week. Heard all the excited chatter on the bus this morning when he called from a friends phone. They must be buzzing.

@Mcmumager we’re going tomorrow evening also. Can’t believe it’s show time already. Very exciting!
Newgirls · 05/08/2021 10:04

That is wonderful to read ⭐️

Newgirls · 05/08/2021 10:06

That was for LoneCat (not sure why it didn’t attach sorry!)

Sorry to hear Hunchback is having to take time out but sounds like a good solution and will be ok

Biscuitsneeded · 05/08/2021 18:55

Break a leg to the Peter Pan DC! Have a fantastic time!

Biscuitsneeded · 05/08/2021 19:09

@igetitigetit. I can't advise specifically about Dulwich as this is a new venue, although I do know the theatre isn't too far from Lordship Lane with shops and cafes etc. However my DS has done London shows with NYMT four times so I know how those weeks go. The pastoral team at NYMT really are excellent and they will definitely make sure there is time to get food each lunchtime and evening. With the younger kids they will oversee what they are eating and make sure they don't just keep eating rubbish. Depending on your DC's age (I think they are mainly mid teens in Billy?) they will get accompanied if need be but if youve signed to say they can go unchaperoned they can also do that if they're of a suitable age and stick to groups of 2 or 3. To be honest I took the view that 6 days of pizza/itsu/pret etc might not be ideal but won't do any long term damage as long as they are eating some protein and some veg and not just chocolate!

igetitigetit · 05/08/2021 19:25

@Biscuitsneeded - thank you. My kid is in theory quite old enough to cope with this but the reality is quite different. There have been school trips where I’ve been assured teachers will keep an eye but they haven’t and my child literally hasn’t eaten. I can see this could be quite awkward. I don’t want to make a fuss but I’ll have to raise it. We don’t live that far away so I can at least go and do a recce of the nearest shops. One thing that threw me, though, is that the reply said something about buying ‘supplies to prepare for the next day.’ I don’t know if that means they actually have cooking facilities (even worse!) A takeaway pizza every dinner time would be fine. I guess kid could just about cobble together a sandwich themselves.

Thank you @Biscuitsneeded. Excitement overload! 🌟😄🌟
Biscuitsneeded · 05/08/2021 19:35

@igetitigetit Aha they always fondly imagine the kids are going to make sandwiches in the kitchens to take out with them the next day. They never do! They are pretty tired when they get in and who wants to make sandwiches when you can buy more exciting stuff from itsu?! If I were you I would drop an email to pastoral and explain that your child has a habit of not eating. Can I ask if it is actually an eating disorder that they will need to monitor at Sevenoaks too (the food there is really good by the way) or whether it's just that your DC is fussy and won't get it together to eat/find stuff they like if left to his/her own devices? Will they eat pot noodles if all else fails and you pack a load to eat once back in the accommodation? Or could you talk to DC now and explain how for the sake of the show everyone needs to remain healthy, so they need to write a list of eg 5 things they will definitely eat so that the team can help steer them when the time comes?

igetitigetit · 05/08/2021 20:45

@Biscuitsneeded - that made me smile about making sandwiches. Food at Sevenoaks should be fine as DC has coped with canteen scenarios before. There is a food allergy issue but I’ve made the organisers aware and I’m hoping that’ll be managed properly (I’m sure there’ll be others in the same position). It’s better if it’s all written down as DC not good at asking.

The ‘self-catering’ is worrying because of lack of experience of eating out / buying food without parental involvement and basically under-developed social skills in this respect. And anxiety about it all. I haven’t discussed it with DC yet because I need to approach it in a way the deals with it but doesn’t turn it into an issue. But privately I’m like OMG OMG OMG.

I can certainly pack fruit and biscuits. I’m going to go on a recce this weekend and see what shops and takeaway places there are nearby and the menu and allergens etc.

Then I will write DC a list of suggestions (thanks for mentioning lists - I like lists!) of what to have everyday.

I think fruit and veg will be a casualty but hopefully better than the 24 hour coach trip back from Spain with a diet of Pringles and
Haribo!

Biscuitsneeded · 05/08/2021 21:00

@igetitigetit I think there are various cafes and bakeries on Lordship Lane. Your DC should be able to ask for eg a very plain cheese sandwich (or whatever) and even if that's not on the menu it's not a complicated request. If you know your DC will eat pizza or burgers, teach them now how to use a bank card and order a takeaway. Your DC will spend nearly 2 weeks in Sevenoaks making friends and once they get to Dulwich they will probably just fit in with what friends are doing - I think you might find you get a much more confident DC back afterwards! If your DC is actually much younger than most then pastoral will make a special effort with them, don't worry.

Lonecatwithkitten · 05/08/2021 22:39

@DalekFan and @Mcmumager just been the first video clips being shared tonight a fresh twist is being put on Peter Pan.
So great to get to see them doing their thing after so long.

Mcmumager · 05/08/2021 22:50

@Lonecatwithkitten- so excited but nervous to see it tomorrow night. Spoke to my son on the bus home- they all sounded full of the buzz- so lovely to hear. He is playing Hook- what part is your daughter?

Belshels · 05/08/2021 22:56

The clips of Peter Pan look fab, hope you all enjoy the show those that are going!
My dd is all packed up for Why The Whales Came, we are driving down tomorrow and staying in a hotel. She has so stuff, much including her guitar as been asked to be an actor / musician. She so needs this after a rubbish year with school and friendships, and will be brilliant to be with like minded kids. Xx

Lonecatwithkitten · 05/08/2021 22:59

@Mcmumager she is Tinkerbell. Was your DS in the pitch perfect cabaret with her?

Mcmumager · 05/08/2021 23:22

@Lonecatwithkitten great part- can’t wait to see them.

I think my son and his mates did some very dodgy dance to all that jazz in the cabaret😂

DalekFan · 05/08/2021 23:40

Ah yes @Mcmumager heard all about that! 😂😂

My DD has a friend doing why the Whales came. Peter Pan has totally turned my DD's mental health around as now you now you know what part she is you can see. One of the things she has always loved about BYMT is that it's not geeky to do dance routines and sing into your hairbrush. She can just be herself and I think that is a massive help to mental health. I also believe that the pandemic has keep teens apart so much that having a 2/3 week period with people like them 24/7 has been really good they can hang out and be a proper teen again. I hope your DD enjoys herself.
Lonecatwithkitten · 08/08/2021 18:35

@Belshels it turns out I know the ASM on Whales she is a couple of years older than DD, but they were at the same school and tap danced together.
@Mcmumager and @DalekFan wow what a show I am sure you like me were blown away by the show. DD's last show got a grade 8 distinction from Trinity I thought Peter was of a far higher standard than that. They all did so well. Now taking my very tired fairy home.

Mcmumager · 08/08/2021 22:17

@Lonecatwithkitten @DalekFan I hope your girls aren’t feeling too low. They were both brilliant. We are heading home in the morning and we are hoping the sadness doesn’t hit too hard! I’ve been getting him to speak like hook in general conversation tonight lol.

DalekFan · 08/08/2021 22:34

Wow @Mcmumager and @Lonecatwithkitten what an amazing show it was! They have worked so hard and had so much fun. We are heading home in the morning too and have had family with us tonight to soften the blow. Think reality will hit hard tomorrow though. At least they have great memories of being part of an awesome production.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 08/08/2021 22:46

Awww lovely to read about all the Peter
Pan fun! Photos looked fantastic! Wish us luck for next week - Team Hunchback converge in Manchester tomorrow, all 'tested and tested' and ready for a crazy week!!!!

OP posts:
doesanybodyhaveamap · 08/08/2021 22:48

Should say 'tested and rested' although tested and tested is actually very apt...

Biscuitsneeded · 09/08/2021 20:37

Yes, please all cross fingers for the Hunchback company this week. They've worked so hard and it will be amazing as long as there are no positive tests this week!

Mcmumager · 09/08/2021 20:58

Good luck to all the Hunchback team. I hope it goes brilliantly.
