NYMT / BYMT 2021

Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

Thanks all - reassuring for us - but sad for those who are still the same height / voice ... and have probably grown in performance techniques yet now not getting cast in the show they were once perfect for! (The harshness tho a reflection of the industry in general though). LOVED THE RAGTIME VIDEO! Wow! Sounds like NYMT pushed the boat out to make up for all the disappointments...

My DD is poss too tall/ old for a child yet too small for an adult part in Henrietta ... but then i guess its all relative.

I’m bored today and clearly over- thinking!!!! Grin

minimits · 10/04/2021 17:35

Oh I could write a thesis on over thinking the audition process..Grin

doesanybodyhaveamap · 10/04/2021 17:43

Sorry... feeling quite low about it all again today.

@doesanybodyhaveamap my Dd is having a really rubbish day about it all today too. This is her sixth year of auditioning and her first not getting a recall. She was doing ok all week and today has admitted to a huge knock in confidence.
It is such a horrible business in that way.

minimits · 10/04/2021 18:13

This is the first time I’ve had a real wobbly about the career DS wants. I feel his disappointment and sadness so deeply every time (even when he’s moved on) and the thought of this being how it’ll potentially be for many many years to come is painful! I hate seeing him so unhappy but know the highs overcome the lows. Ugh! These kids are so much more resilient than I could ever be.

Belshels · 10/04/2021 18:13

I hadn't seen the ragtime video, wow its wonderful! They didn't do anything with those that were cast in the workshop which is a shame.
My dd is also feeling a bit low, always had a recall in the 4 years she's been at it, but none this year😥.
Hopefully this will be the final weekend they will feel a bit down (the weather doesn't help either!) and will be better when all their classes start back next week🤞🏼

Comefromaway · 10/04/2021 18:13

It’s a dreadfully harsh industry. I often wish dd wanted a different career.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 10/04/2021 18:54

I'm just super sad to think that last year might have been her only casting and bloody Covid took it away. But so many people have lost so much to this pandemic I know I should have more perspective.

OP posts:
Jamsanmum · 10/04/2021 19:15

Oh my god i so empathise with this. Its hard to keep a perspective though ... i try to keep focusing on how much resilience they’re building and how valuable it is. We had soooo many near misses in 2019 / early 2020 ... she got sooo close - but always at the 11th hr was snatched away. She’s now no longer young enough for children roles in west end (lost that yr).... but i keep reminding her how much stronger she is for it by bouncing back. It’s ultimately a big test to see if they really want it!

Biscuitsneeded · 10/04/2021 19:15

Oh agreed, it's been wretched for so many of them and even harsher on those who had a place last year and now don't. And with recalls not even done yet I am concerned there may be more disappointed in a couple of weeks. But the theatres aren't even open yet. Fingers crossed lots more local opportunities will open up in the next few months for those who miss out this summer. @doesanybodyhaveamap and @aplo I really feel for your DDs but am also quite sure they will back treading the boards before very long. I know there are loads of successful MT performers working in 2021 (or hopefully about to work!) who never got into NYMT despite several years of trying, or who had a long NYMT career but still had a year here and there where they weren't cast, and now look at them! Minimits is right, it's a very scary industry for a child to want to go into, but if they are determined it's very hard to discourage them!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 10/04/2021 19:21

The logical part of me knows this and I'm trying to listen to her. Then I hear DD belting out 'Defying Gravity' upstairs and dissolve again.... ugh. Get it together woman!!

OP posts:
Newgirls · 10/04/2021 19:24

It’s so so hard. My eldest lost out on a play she was in. My youngest had a show cancelled. No end of school performances etc either.

If they can keep singing, learning monos, poems, dancing, writing things it will hold them in good stead for the future 🙏

aplo · 10/04/2021 19:26

@doesanybodyhaveamap the first year DD auditioned we went to see wicked the night before her recall and Emma Hatton was playing elphaba, we passed the stage door afterwards just as she was coming out and we ended up waking to the tube with her, DD asked her if she had any advice for an audition and she asked what it was for and when DD said NYMT she told us that she auditioned twice and never had a recall and told DD she was already better than her. It certainly helped DD going into her recall the next day!

aplo · 10/04/2021 19:29

This past year though has been totally rubbish for all performers at all levels and especially for children who grow out of parts.
My DS will now never play the part he had in Ragtime which is one of my favourite shows. He (hopefully) will have lots more performing in his life and was lucky enough to be cast in a tv programme over lockdown but I will always slightly lament the little boy role!

Wow what a story! And shows how it’s so important to keep going if you can!

Belusha · 11/04/2021 08:25

@aplo what a fabulous story (we do have a hoodie btw!). I’m sorry your DD is still feeling so bruised by it all. For us it was more the timing of the no that made it hard I think.

Reading everyone’s input on here has certainly given me a much better insight into the whole crazy business and DD has dusted herself off and will no doubt be auditioning again next year. I’ll look forward to hearing how everyone gets on as the process continues.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 11/04/2021 08:33

It is a lovely story. Xx

Sun is shining here today. Always makes the world seem a bit better doesn't it?

Thanks for your lovely supportive messages yesterday. It's good to know I'm not alone! DD is not a talker so it's hard to know where she is at with it, but she seems to be far more resilient than I am (thankfully) and is just really keen for a musician place and to hear what BYMT might offer.

This ongoing uncertainty is also driving me completely mad because it's all I can think about... I just want to have It all nailed down then we can be happy and excited for whatever she has got (and we do at least know about BYMT musician so there WILL be a show!) and move on.

OP posts:
Biscuitsneeded · 11/04/2021 12:13

@doesanybodyhaveamap I am hoping for you and the several others on here in similar positions that NYMT musician results will come very soon, and that you hear from BYMT ASAP so you can have a clear idea of how your summer will be. I think over the last of year we have got so used to making plans and then having to change them, and then making no plans at all because there was no point, and now this glimmer of hope that things might actually happen this summer makes us all the more impatient to have things nailed down, especially with siblings, booking annual leave etc to consider. Fingers crossed everybody's situation will be resolved in the next couple of weeks.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 11/04/2021 12:40

Thanks @Biscuitsneeded fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Operagirl1 · 11/04/2021 12:57

If there is going to be a long delay giving out results, it's a shame they can't send out regular updates, even just one line so you know you haven't been forgotten. All this waiting is not good for mental health. In my over 30 years as a professional opera singer, I have never had to wait this long for a result!

Biscuitsneeded · 11/04/2021 13:01

@Operagirl1 which organisation and role are you waiting for? (Sorry I haven't managed to track everyone's status!!).

Operagirl1 · 11/04/2021 13:02

My daughter auditioned for BYMT

doesanybodyhaveamap · 11/04/2021 13:54

@Operagirl1 I'm sincerely hoping that once Frances is back tomorrow things will start moving in the BYMT office again...

Janet25 · 11/04/2021 20:24

I’m hoping the musicians might here something from NYMT this week or an update from BYMT. The logistics with venues etc this must be a nightmare for them with planning though, so understandable delay I guess
