NYMT / BYMT 2021

Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

Thanks @Biscuitsneeded and @Comefromaway for your voices of reason and NYMT experience. It’s much appreciated.
DD did Growl and we went to watch LT as she was also recalled for that so their paths might have crossed biscuits. She is 16 so there are definitely more years of this ahead.

Genuinely wish all those with recalls or still waiting to hear from BYMT the best of luck.

Pinkstargazer12 · 08/04/2021 14:54

Anyone recalled for Hunchback? DD having a crisis as to whether to do an American accent or not. All the only versions use an American accent. Any idea? Nothing in the notes.

Biscuitsneeded · 08/04/2021 15:04

@Pinkstargazer12 Personally I wouldn't use an American accent, but why not ask? I'm sure you'll get a response (even if they do seem to be dealing with a lot of admin currently!)

Pinkstargazer12 · 08/04/2021 15:10

Thanks @Biscuitsneeded that was my gut feeling. I think I will ask her to email.

Comefromaway · 08/04/2021 15:15

My gut feeling would be not to use an American accent (unless you are American). I'm guessing the available recordings were originally American productions?

Pinkstargazer12 · 08/04/2021 15:21

@Comefromaway yes all American productions but no reason why a British accent shouldn’t be used, especially as it’s a British theatre company.
Thanks for your input!

@Belusha my DD was in growl too and is 16 so I’m sure we must have met- (especially if she has a growl hoodie) DD has also been in three other NYMT productions before growl and was offered the workshop last year and no recall this year. I suspect they have recalled less with recalls being on Zoom. She will be back auditioning again next year- some of her friends who didn’t get recalls this year (and other years) are amazing performers but may not just not have fit a role this year and I think it is fairer not to recall them than to give them further hope when there isn’t a space in a show to fit them.
@Pinkstargazer12 I had this conversation with a student and my DS today and neither are using an American accent- it is set in Paris and being performed in Manchester so it seems wrong.

"was offered the workshop last year". Are all the NYMT "nos" offered the workshop or is it just some of them, maybe the newbies or is it offered to the "just missed the recalls" - not sure how this works? Thank you.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 09/04/2021 07:41

@2020again there are 2 'workshops' being referred to here:

  1. a workshop of a new musical in development which is a shorter project but is cast by audition via the recalls- this year it's 'A Kiss for Cinderella'. Later these often become full scale productions (eg Henrietta)

  2. the general summer ones which all 'no' people have been offered and you can also book onto without audition.

Hope this helps

Doesanybodyhaveamap thanks so much for clarifying, it's very helpful as I had not twigged that.

Biscuitsneeded · 09/04/2021 08:22

It is confusing! The summer workshops which you can book onto are sometimes called the summer course which I think is a better description and less confusing! People always seem to enjoy them. Then the one-week 'workshop' for a new project is by audition only, and some of the people they can't place in a show at recalls will get offered that, but not all. Sometimes I think people feel it's a bit of a consolation prize but I don't think they should ! Lots of frequent returners to NYMT have had a year where they have done the workshop, and very often the workshop then gets turned into a full scale production the following year (not with the same cast). I think it must be very interesting to work with creatives at the outset and contribute creatively to their ideas.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 09/04/2021 08:27

Agreed @Biscuitsneeded it sounds like a fantastic opportunity to be involved in.

Depending on what happens with NYMT musician / BYMT performer outcomes we will definitely look at the NYMT and BYMT summer courses that are on offer. They are great training opps and also a chance to get in front of creatives that might well be involved in the audition process in later years and I do think they remember people...

Newgirls · 09/04/2021 08:54

Oh I hadn’t understood the summer thing either

Is the workshop the one in Sevenoaks? We got two emails about workshops and I assumed it was for the general summer ones? We booked one of those (tho it might clash with nyt?!!)

Biscuitsneeded · 09/04/2021 10:08

@Newgirls yes what you have booked will be the general summer course. They will offer the places on the workshop (A Kiss for Cinderella) so some of the recalled applicants after recalls.

Just to add, one girl who got recalled a few years ago and didn't get a show got invited to the workshop instead. She did it and played the lead during workshop week, and came back next year when the workshop show was a full production and played the lead again at The Other Palace! So, absolutely worth doing!

Newgirls · 09/04/2021 11:30

That sounds great! I know dd will enjoy whatever course she does

Jamsanmum · 10/04/2021 16:44

What were last year’s nymt cast shows? Kiss me kate was one and Henrietta...? My DD has Henrietta recall but wondering if its already half cast from last year... i can’t imagine the creatives wouldn’t honour the roles given the huge disappointment of the cancellation - unless of course chdn have grown...? My poor DD is working so hard on the material but wondering if there are maybe so few potential parts available .... anyone else have Henrietta call back??

doesanybodyhaveamap · 10/04/2021 16:47

@Jamsanmum they are totally starting from scratch, no roles from last year honoured.

OP posts:
Jamsanmum · 10/04/2021 16:52

Really? Gosh that’s harsh!!! Have they explained that somewhere... my DD has selective hearing!!!!Grin

doesanybodyhaveamap · 10/04/2021 16:54

I asked the question last year when the shows were cancelled. DD was so utterly disappointed.

OP posts:
doesanybodyhaveamap · 10/04/2021 16:55

And evident from the fact that so many of last years cast haven't even got recalls...

OP posts:
Operagirl1 · 10/04/2021 17:01

After all these kids have been through with over 12 months of lockdown, that seems very brutal.

Biscuitsneeded · 10/04/2021 17:02

@Jamsanmum all parts are definitely available. My DS was cast in Henrietta last year and he's not recalled for it this time, but I understand why. They want the shows to be the best they can be. The RSC haven't invited back the girls who were about to start as Matildas when the pandemic struck, for the very good reason that they will have grown too tall, and it's the same principle. NYMT did try very hard to give last year's casts some special experiences like zooms with alumni, workshops etc, and they also refunded us every penny. But apart from the recent slight chaos with emails (and honestly in six years of DS doing/applying to NYMT I have never known this happen before and I think they are just dealing with so much that is new and different) they are a very professional organisation. If your DD has a Henrietta recall she has as much chance as everyone else recalled. Good luck with the materials and I hope she has fun in her recall.

aplo · 10/04/2021 17:17

Just backing up what @Biscuitsneeded said about last years shows. My eldest DS was cast in Henrietta last year and at 23 hasn’t grown or had a change of voice and his recall this year is for hunchback.

What NYMT gave in such limited circumstances to last years casts was fantastic, I know I may be biased as my youngest DS was involved but the video that the ragtime cast did is one of my favourite things from the whole of the last year. The work that was put into that especially by the Musical director for the show was phenomenal with each individual getting feedback and fixing notes on their performances and yet we had ever penny refunded to us from last years fee.

Biscuitsneeded · 10/04/2021 17:25

The Henrietta situation is unique because it's the one show carried forward. This is because NYMT held a competition for writers of musicals to pitch their shows and the winner would see their show workshopped and then (if I remember correctly) done as a full show. So they owe it to the creatives to put it on. It is really hard on some of the kids but equally they really can't have a Henrietta who's 5 foot 5 and expect the audience to buy into the idea that she's a small child.

Yr10mom · 10/04/2021 17:29

i agree - the Ragtime performance piece was very special (dd was in the pit)
