NYMT / BYMT 2021

Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

He’s also waiting for NYT first round results but not optimistic.

Comefromaway · 17/03/2021 13:16

I'm impressed at a school show going ahead!

minimits · 17/03/2021 13:45

It’s for his MT Btec so it has to really! He’s been pretending to be a rabbit in his bedroom this morning! Oh the joys. Grin

Comefromaway · 17/03/2021 14:28

The MT students at ds's college did a filmed show without an audience at Christmas (as did ds for his music performance Btec). I know the MT's are not doing a show this year but are rehearsing extracts. It's not known whether this will be filmed or in front of a live audience.

Dd is in her grad year of a L6 Trinity Diploma in MT and we are not sure if any actual shows will go ahead this year or just filming.

minimits · 17/03/2021 14:33

Yes it’s an unknown as to wether his will have an actual audience or not! Really hoping it can go ahead with a socially distanced audience in June. I know last year’s was just filmed. We can but hope.

DalekFan · 17/03/2021 18:18

We’re waiting on NYMT Zoom recall result and BYMT final result (both as performer). So maybe a small 2-seater sofa for us? 😂😂

chaperonemum · 17/03/2021 18:20

Roll call:

DD13

NYMT stage performer audition workshop waiting for outcome

BYMT stage performer, did workshop so waiting for outcome. Not hopefully as she feels she messed up

Got confirmation today of a bit funding so yay!!

Alakazam8 · 17/03/2021 18:22

Definitely is a bar-otherwise don’t know where I got that lovely g and t I had to celebrate dd getting through first stage last night- and maybe a spa area is needed too!
Come and sit down @DalekFan!

Thewaitingistorture · 17/03/2021 18:48

Hi all. New to the group so just wanted to pop on and say hi. The info on other posts has been really helpful to understand the process a little more. My dd 14 has applied as Stage Performer and for the Stage Choir. Heard yesterday she has Zoom audition this Sunday. We applied on the deadline day, so could possibly be the last audition weekend? Has anyone else applied for the choir? We have not heard anything about that audition but presume the timings may be similar to musicians? Sorry I do tend to waffle on. X

minimits · 17/03/2021 18:52

@Thewaitingistorture welcome to the waiting room! I am definitely a total waffler so don’t apologise!!!

Biscuitsneeded · 17/03/2021 19:16

Welcome to the recent joiners. What's really nice is that this waiting room isn't at all cliquey and everyone is supportive of each others' DC. It's actually just like the Pret a manger round the corner from where NYMT recalls usually happen and anxious parents hang out! (Although Pret doesn't offer gin; perhaps we should suggest that if ever get back there.)

For the rollcall: DS who is about to be 16 this weekend has applied for NYMT stage performer, did his zoom workshop in Feb and is waiting for news. He's done NYMT a few times before but doesn't feel any more confident of success than he did when was 10 - in fact the stakes feel higher each year as he loves it so much.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 17/03/2021 20:17

Have to say, you guys are most certainly good company in the waiting room 😜

Xxx

@minimits
Keeping everything crossed for him.
DS is only in his first year but they haven’t even been allowed to sing (in college!) due to Covid! Not exactly the MT course I’d imagined :(

And yes, we do need a bar here!

minimits · 17/03/2021 21:20

@Triflefan that’s so sad! DS has had to wear a visor for singing since September but luckily has been able to sing. The guidance is so woolly-research seems to suggest singing is no more dangerous than talking so belting is like shouting I guess. But I’m not allowed to sing nursery rhymes even with my Reception ClassSad

aplo · 17/03/2021 22:17

Thanks @Biscuitsneeded for pointing me this way. Another parent waiting here and I am totally outing myself but I have three children of my own who have all had zoom recalls and four students who have had zoom recalls and one more having hers next weekend.
I have been involved with NYMT as a teacher for almost 10 years and my middle child (age 16) is auditioning for the 6th time and has been lucky to have a show every time so far- she missed out on taking part in the workshop last year, my eldest auditioned unsuccessfully eight years ago and for various reasons didn’t audition again until last year and was offered a part in Henrietta and my youngest was supposed to be in ragtime last year so our plan of a summer in London evaporated with Covid last year.
DS1 was the latest of mine to submit and had his recall last Saturday afternoon and he said that they were told they would hear late March/ early April and recalls would be a song submitted in advance from the recalled show and then a zoom workshop for script and dance/ movement.
My daughter would give her right arm to be involved again this year- she said recently she would be the grass on the ground and lie flat on stage if she could just be there!

My students who have done NYMT before have all adored every minute and one has gone on to be part of the pastoral team for many years and then assistant choreographer on a few shows.

aplo · 17/03/2021 22:23

@Triflefan the no singing is so difficult for all. I am teaching on zoom currently and my students have adapted so well, they manage to teach me something new every week. I am really looking forward to getting back to in person teaching whenever that may be!

thebabewiththepower · 18/03/2021 09:35

Hi all, just found this thread. Just wondered if those who've been through it before may be able to answer some questions. My son applied and has a recall this weekend - does pretty much everyone get a recall to the workshops? He loves musical theatre but his singing is not the strongest (although he tries and loves singing and even started singing lessons to try and get better but he's certainly not a natural) so I was a little surprised that he got through but then wondered if they just invite everyone to this next stage? His acting is his strong point but he would love to be involved. He's only 11 so at the younger end of the age groups - are the workshops all mixed ages? Thank you!

Alakazam8 · 18/03/2021 11:01

Hi @thebabewiththepower don’t know the answers really but thought I’d reply cos my dd is also a first timer with a workshop this weekend. Singing is her strength but she’s not really a dancer, though enjoys it. She’s also 11 so younger end. I know of a few people who didn’t get workshops but not many! Welcome to the waiting room- help yourself to a drink!

Pollydollydimpledo · 18/03/2021 13:02

Hi,
My daughter (16) has applied this year for NTMT, loves singing dancing n acting.... for a performing role
Not sure what to expect though, she has a workshop to do this Sat online ... excited for her, and if anything a great experience!!!
Hopes the wifi is going to behave itself 😰 as it’s a good few hours...
Smile

Biscuitsneeded · 18/03/2021 13:15

Hi @thebabewiththepower . I will try to be helpful! Everything is different this year because of Covid, so the video submisson is new and also the online workshop. It seems a lot of applicants are getting through to the recall workshop but not all, so yes there is some filtering. I suspect a much bigger cull will happen before final recalls as they will presumably want to get them all done in a weekend and not recall unnecessarily. As far as not being am amazing singer goes, I certai ly didnt think my DS was at that age. Perhaps your DS shows potential though? Normally it's just a regional day long workshop in person which anyone can book and go to, and from that they recall to final recalls.

Biscuitsneeded · 18/03/2021 13:18

Oh, yes the workshops this year all ages mixed up but they won't expect the standard from an 11 year old that they would from a 21 year old . They are super nice so your DS should just relax and enjoy and not worry - no singing this round anyway!

Pollydollydimpledo · 18/03/2021 13:31

Hi,

I’m new on here and finding my feet, so glad I found the thread.... really helpful and positive.

Don’t know what to expect regarding workshop, I guess just try and relax and take it all in!!

chuffedtolittlemintballs · 18/03/2021 13:42

Congrats to everyone who has a recall this weekend - hope your DC all enjoy the experience!

@thebabewiththepower my DS (12) had his workshop right at the beginning. There were 40 auditioning altogether, split into groups of 20. DS was in a group with ages ranging from 10/11 right up to 23, I think (depending on how reliable his recounting of it is!). I don't know if you've seen it but just before the first online workshops, NYMT did a Facebook live with two of the directors of this years shows, where they talked about the auditions and this years shows and also answered some questions. I watched with my DS and I think it was good for him to see how friendly and relaxed NYMT seems and to be familiar with the faces he might see at the workshop. I think it is still available on the Facebook page, if you haven't watched it yet.

Hope it goes really well this weekend!

Notaclue08 · 18/03/2021 13:57

So pleased that you are all starting to hear and doesanybodyhaveamap you need a sofa bed bless you. We can’t wait for theatres to open. DD is fit to burst having not been able to perform and now wants to go to a full time performing arts school. 😫

thebabewiththepower · 18/03/2021 14:12

Thanks @biscuitsneeded and @alakazam8. He has no worries at all about the workshop at all, he's very laid back and almost too relaxed about everything in his life. Good to know there's no singing in the workshops! He's done quite a bit of theatre, mainly straight acting but he just loves singing and musicals so I'm sure he'll enjoy the workshop. He certainly has no expectations of getting through (probably because I'm so very realistic about his singing!!).
