June Music Thread

Hello all and welcome to the June thread! Waffle did me the honours of asking me to initiate this thread as she has no access to Internet while on holiday.

This thread was first initiated by Waffle when Goo was 6 and now she's 11. It is a thread for all the musicians, big and small, to share their love (and frustrations Grin) during the long path of learning an instrument. I first joined when dd was 7 and in the process of preparing for grade 1 piano for moral support. If you read the ending of the May thread you'll realise I am still a nervous reck Smile here we are now, two years later, Dd is 9 and preparing for grade 5 piano and grade 3 clarinet, the exams are in exactly 13 days. I also have DS 15 who is in the middle of his GCSEs at the moment, he has no musical interest.

As I couldn't leave Waffle without an introduction, below is a quote from the May thread. The only correction is that I believe Rara has now turned 9. Smile

I have two daughters. Goo is 11 and in her last term at primary school. She's working towards her Grade 8 Flute (some time next year) and playing from the Grade 4 Piano book (currently refusing to take any exams, and putting off the first proper performance!). Rara is 8, may or may not be doing Grade 3 Cello this term, and is approaching Grade 2 Clarinet.

Both of them played the recorder for years, starting as preschoolers. They reached Grades 7 and 3 respectively, but sadly neither has really played since the music festival a few months ago. They are obsessed with their Flute and Clarinet, and really enjoy Piano and Cello. There won't be many opportunities to play the recorder at the secondary school they will attend, so much as I love it, it's probably a good time to quietly drop it. Recorder has given them both lots of opportunities, confidence, reading skills... and festival prizes!

Gosh so far behind on this thread! Got some wifi at the airport...Thanks for the kind wishes everyone.

Green - yes please to the video!

Kutik - that sounds a terrific result. Miniprada's comprehension was her worst area last year also so don't worry. Definitely practice though if you can whilst still having fun!

Hope to catch up with the thread properly when I get back (although I am picking up the new puppy tomorrow so I guess that's all my free time gone 😂)

raspberryrippleicecream · 11/06/2017 21:40

Waffle that was also my plan re shoes, but despite being taller than me, DD's feet stayed slightly smaller. We do share occasionally though.

DS2 is now taller than me, so I am definitely the smallest in the family at 5'7".

Icouldbe DH went down to uni to pick DS up and drop him off, ( he'd missed the uni coach owing to an inconvenient exam) and said it was one of the maddest things he'd ever seen, but absolutely amazing!

Congratulations to all those with lovely news.

Green would love to see the video.

DS2 is playing organ accompaniment at a service next Sunday for the first time. Apparently he is around Grade 5, though it's kind of meaningless as he is where he is, no exams intended just yet!

Fleurdelise · 11/06/2017 21:55

I've got videos to share too, don't want to steal Minigreen's thunder, it is part of our pre-exam recording Smile

We managed to record Summertime and part of Slow Air before my phone memory was full. I'll send it on to anybody wanting to see dd. Smile

Of course, Fleur although it might be tomorrow evening by the time I get round to watching... I'm off to bed soon, and have work and Trinity exams tomorrow.

stringchild · 11/06/2017 23:04

Fleur - definitely please:)

Kutik73 · 12/06/2017 05:59

Fleur, yes please Smile

Prada, thank you for the positive note on DS's comprehension. It's apparently quite difficult to grasp for younger mind. But DS seems to be struggling specially. His reading/spelling/grammar are all very advanced, yet he cannot process to use them. It's shown when he speaks too. He is not great at describing things. I think it comes with maturity so am not very worried, and as you say some practice will help him improve, but may not be 11+ standard in time. I will see...

Fleurdelise · 12/06/2017 07:57

I've sent it to you ladies! Have an easy week everyone!

Happy birthday mini kutik Cake

Fleurdelise · 12/06/2017 09:22

I've sent it to everybody asking. Smile

string hahaha at the scales comment, it is the same thing I said to dd last night, like it or not they will be in the exam. We're having massive issues here as dd launches herself into playing the scale as soon as it is asked but then realises is not the one asked for. So I say "B flat major" she's straight in there playing a minor or just B major and after 3 notes she goes "oh you said B flat major" and starts again. Hmm No matter how many times I say she needs to take her time she won't listen. I guess she'll have to see the result of it herself. I'll record the clarinet pieces tonight after I clear my phone memory.

I was just thinking now: wouldn't it be nice to create a YouTube channel for our DCs and upload videos only we could see? I'm happy to organise it if you guys want, we just need to create a gmail address and circulate it on the group by PM and then we can each upload as and when?
