Hello all and welcome to the June thread! Waffle did me the honours of asking me to initiate this thread as she has no access to Internet while on holiday.

This thread was first initiated by Waffle when Goo was 6 and now she's 11. It is a thread for all the musicians, big and small, to share their love (and frustrations Grin) during the long path of learning an instrument. I first joined when dd was 7 and in the process of preparing for grade 1 piano for moral support. If you read the ending of the May thread you'll realise I am still a nervous reck Smile here we are now, two years later, Dd is 9 and preparing for grade 5 piano and grade 3 clarinet, the exams are in exactly 13 days. I also have DS 15 who is in the middle of his GCSEs at the moment, he has no musical interest.

As I couldn't leave Waffle without an introduction, below is a quote from the May thread. The only correction is that I believe Rara has now turned 9. Smile

I have two daughters. Goo is 11 and in her last term at primary school. She's working towards her Grade 8 Flute (some time next year) and playing from the Grade 4 Piano book (currently refusing to take any exams, and putting off the first proper performance!). Rara is 8, may or may not be doing Grade 3 Cello this term, and is approaching Grade 2 Clarinet.

Both of them played the recorder for years, starting as preschoolers. They reached Grades 7 and 3 respectively, but sadly neither has really played since the music festival a few months ago. They are obsessed with their Flute and Clarinet, and really enjoy Piano and Cello. There won't be many opportunities to play the recorder at the secondary school they will attend, so much as I love it, it's probably a good time to quietly drop it. Recorder has given them both lots of opportunities, confidence, reading skills... and festival prizes!

Greenleave not southwest but Stringers in Marylebone will rehair if you can't find anything else. Or you could try the Old Violin Workshop in Hampton?

One more option Green, if you can make it to Acton West London, try Matthew Coltman. Drummers gave me this one a few years back. Just ring first to see how quickly he can do/same time as you are not local...

Kutik73 · 29/06/2017 14:55

Green, I also recommend Old Violin Workshop. They are fab. I even bought DS's 1/2 and 3/4 violins from them. Call them before you go and tell them you are looking for the same day service. They did it within an hour for me. I dropped the bow, went to a coffee shop, and it was done in an hour. If you just pop in without a call, they may not be able to do it on the day.

Minimusiciansmama · 29/06/2017 15:55

Distinction for her piano exam. a relief as she came out upset with the examiner. Flipping perfectionist children though- it's below her last clarinet result so she said she wanted was disappointed about that!

Wafflenose · 29/06/2017 16:20

Well done, Mini! You really can't tell with examiners. It's just not worth overthinking!

Minimusiciansmama · 29/06/2017 16:22

waffle she's really good at picking out exactly where she was strong or to the note where she wasn't so I reckoned at a mark around what she got, she just hasn't worked out the insignificance of single note errors and such yet!

Wafflenose · 29/06/2017 16:27

I don't think anyone ever manages to overlook small errors really!

Doubleup · 29/06/2017 16:38

Minimusician, younger kids can start on a mini bassoon or tenoroon. They don't have to wait until they are big enough for a full size bassoon. DD2 started aged 8 on a mini bassoon. Swapped to a short reach full sized bassoon about 6 months later as she grew quite quickly.

stringchild · 29/06/2017 16:52

Well done Mini!

Mini - what date was the exam? Am getting a little nervous....

woolleybear · 29/06/2017 18:08

Well done Mini mini!

Very strange dd being at band for so long tonight, she only stays for the first half of senior band usually but staying for it all as its their concert next week. I don't know what to do with myself!

hapsburg · 29/06/2017 18:12

mini my DD also started on a mini-bassoon when she was very little. To be honest though, we found some old recordings the other day and it sounded hideous - I think she only carried on because she grew big enough for a full-size (short reach) pretty quickly!

Greenleave · 29/06/2017 18:48

Excellent news Mini!

I have made few calls for all 3 shops however we wont be able to have it done before exam. What a shame! The Old Violin work shop rehair man is only in the shop on Thursday and Friday, the other two shops will take a week for it to be done, they all dont open on Sundays and close at 5.30pm most days and I am away abroad until next Sunday so impossible to have it done before next weekend.

I am thinking of getting the spare one from Marylebone tomorrow as I am going out with my friends after work nearby. The girl mentioned on the phone that a good 3/4 is around £200. We didnt pay that much for our current (only) one. I might skip my July coffee for her new bow.

woolleybear · 29/06/2017 19:16

Dd started with a full size bassoon at just turned 10. She's fairly big for her age but it is a bit of a stretch. It's nearly as big as her!

doubleup hapsburg her clarinet teacher is really a bassoon teacher "by trade" and has said she doesn't like the sound of the mini ones and would rather she wait til she can manage a short reach. She thinks she'll be able to start when she's about 10.

stringchild her exam was Monday (trinity)

Icouldbeknitting · 29/06/2017 20:25

Excellent news Mini, it is hard when they only remember the odd slip and not the big chunks where it all went right.

Doubleup · 29/06/2017 21:06

Minimusician congrats to your dd!

Re. starting on mini bassoons, you should do a google search on the subject. There is a real movement towards it so that kids don't lose interest and decide to play other instruments instead. DD2's teacher really rates them.

troutsprout · 29/06/2017 21:12

Well done mini mini .. that's a great result! Smile

LooseAtTheSeams · 29/06/2017 21:35

Well done Minimini super result Star
Slightly dreading DS2's piano lesson tomorrow as one of the pieces is great one minute and not so great the next. Also, I don't think his scales are as ready as he supposes!
On the other hand he's been doing Y7 exams this week and I came back from work today to find him fast asleep in bed, so I honestly don't have the heart to nag him too much!

Minimusiciansmama · 29/06/2017 22:20

doubleup thank you- I will! What make did your wee one start on?
