June Music Thread

Hello all and welcome to the June thread! Waffle did me the honours of asking me to initiate this thread as she has no access to Internet while on holiday.

This thread was first initiated by Waffle when Goo was 6 and now she's 11. It is a thread for all the musicians, big and small, to share their love (and frustrations Grin) during the long path of learning an instrument. I first joined when dd was 7 and in the process of preparing for grade 1 piano for moral support. If you read the ending of the May thread you'll realise I am still a nervous reck Smile here we are now, two years later, Dd is 9 and preparing for grade 5 piano and grade 3 clarinet, the exams are in exactly 13 days. I also have DS 15 who is in the middle of his GCSEs at the moment, he has no musical interest.

As I couldn't leave Waffle without an introduction, below is a quote from the May thread. The only correction is that I believe Rara has now turned 9. Smile

I have two daughters. Goo is 11 and in her last term at primary school. She's working towards her Grade 8 Flute (some time next year) and playing from the Grade 4 Piano book (currently refusing to take any exams, and putting off the first proper performance!). Rara is 8, may or may not be doing Grade 3 Cello this term, and is approaching Grade 2 Clarinet.

Both of them played the recorder for years, starting as preschoolers. They reached Grades 7 and 3 respectively, but sadly neither has really played since the music festival a few months ago. They are obsessed with their Flute and Clarinet, and really enjoy Piano and Cello. There won't be many opportunities to play the recorder at the secondary school they will attend, so much as I love it, it's probably a good time to quietly drop it. Recorder has given them both lots of opportunities, confidence, reading skills... and festival prizes!

Speaking of heights and measures... everyone keeps telling me Goo is taller than me. She's not, and to prove it I got DH to measure us this morning. I am 159cm/ 5' 2.6". She is 157.5cm/ 5'2". Give her a couple of months though...

Doubleup · 11/06/2017 14:14

Waffle, I have resigned myself to being the shortest in the family at some point. DD1 is now 5'9" and DD2 is already 5' tall at 10. I'm a smidgin under 5'8"

Thank you Trumpet and Alexandra! She took her composition to her piano teacher today (we had last practice with clarinet and piano accompaniment) and she said she liked it and will ask for advice on helping dd in this area. She plays in an orchestra and moves within these music circles so hopefully we won't need to hire another teacher specialising in this if dd becomes serious about it.

Thank you for the good wishes also, I am feeling more and more confident even though there are little things that could be improved but there always are, aren't they? I am sure if the date was 13 July we still could have improved the pieces so hopefully dd is feeling confident now.

Not too much this month (twins in midst of A levels) but one is in a solo concert at school days after the A levels which I had assumed he'd not be in - I'e a work even I'm presenting so will have to let everyone go early and am laughing that nearly 33 years after I had the first child I am still having to juggle work and school events even now to the bitter end. Hopefully I will make it in time . He has ear marked a week immediately after the last A level for loads of music, then a trip abroad (pop concert in Belgium for a few days or festival or something, camping) then back for speech day and the very final concert - a band one (jazz , rock etc) and then that's it - school music over forever for my children's generation.
I will probably do a lot more singing in the Autumn when the boys have left (when I'm not working to pay their unviersity costs that is)... so I suspect that new phase for me will be more not less music actually.

Good luck to everyone else.

Its a small church and she played the 100 yrs old rustic piano first time this morning in front of (quite few) church goers. I did feel a pang of proud, this moment reminds me why we invested in music.

Fleurdelise · 11/06/2017 17:36

Green can I please have the video too? Thank you!

Green I would love to see it too please

Kutik73 · 11/06/2017 18:38

By the way, Green, your mini is so tall if she is already 145cm and she is still Y4! My DS is not particularly short in his class but just 140cm or so and he is Y5....

I took DS to a 11+ mock test today! It's rather a sudden decision. I basically threw him in. Grin Thought it would be good to know where he stands before making a firm decision where to apply.

Received the report straight after.... He achieved terrific marks in Maths, VR and NVR. The report said they were almost faultless and only errors were those of a slightly careless nature. He was always good at Maths so not a huge surprise but the high mark in VR was totally unexpected. But, by contrast, English was worryingly... Writing was actually OK, but comprehension.... Shock The private school of DS's choice doesn't test VR/NVR, so having high marks in those are pretty meaningless....

Having said that, I am pleased by the outcome. I think he did jolly well without any preparation. Perhaps, after some practice and familiarisation, the mark of English may improve...? Hmmm, to be honest, I'm not very confident....

Now we need a family meeting to discuss how we would like to spend our summer! Should I let him work hard on his weak area (comprehension!!!!), or should opt for the stress free option (states) and enjoy the summer (holiday, music, activities...)...

Kutik73 · 11/06/2017 18:44

Green, thank you! She is amazing! Really, wow!! Flowers

stringchild · 11/06/2017 18:54

Green - oh yes please!

DD is alround the same as Goo and working hard to catch me up; really not far away but seems to have stopped growing for a little while....thank goodness as just restocked her very depleted wardrobe!

8 days to g8...oh my.....

Wafflenose · 11/06/2017 19:06

We need to go clothes shopping too, as Goo has been growing 1cm per month for some time! She has loads of tops, but only one pair of shorts and two pairs of jeans which fit... one in age 12-13, and one in a super skinny style in a ladies' size 6.

Goo and I have the same size feet now (5.5) so I am going to be buying her lovely shoes for the coming year, then keeping them when she grows out of them! Grin
