Anyone doing it?

Either London or Edinburgh?

Anyone interested in a fitness / support thread?

I'm doing it for the 3rd time in May (missed last year, as it was the night DS was born!) and really looking forward to it, but feeling a bit more apprehensive, as I'm not as fit as I used to be!

Should have said that the bum thing was a tip from the pack - if you imagine you're holding £50 between your butt cheeks, it really helps your speed walking posture apparently

bigTillyMint · 23/02/2009 13:19

FP, are you doing the whole power walking technique? I got terrible back ache on Sat, so I should give the bum clenching a go. But for 3 hours?!!! And we aren't doing the power walking technique - do you think we should?

Marg and Wiffey - it must be hard with depression. Don't be too hard on yourselves - if you don't make it out one day, don't beat yourself up about it. Just feel proud when you do make it out for a walk. And get those natural endorphins going!

marg1066 · 23/02/2009 13:55

FP no need to apologise, didn't take it that way at all.
Thanks TM for your support, got to the docs later as found lump in my breast, let you know how it goes.x

wiffey · 23/02/2009 17:30

Thanks everyone, feeling a little more up today, mainly thinking about you all walking like you've got £50 stuck in your bums

I'm not doing the full power walking technique either at the moment, maybe give it a go but have enough back problems as it is so a little wary.

Marg hope all went Ok today, thinking of you x

bigTillyMint · 23/02/2009 17:39

Marg, I have got a sore bit behind my nipple so I'm going next week. Fingers crossed they are nothing serious! Let us know how you got on.

funnypeculiar · 23/02/2009 17:53

I've been trying to do a bit of the technique - at least the bum clenching bit - I didn't manage it for 3 hours, but it defn helped my back, so I reckon it's worth a try. I am also trying to do short > big long strides, and waving my arms about in what i fondly imagine to be a powerful way.

But am avoiding wiggling my arse about in full powerwalk style-y!

Hope all went well at the docs today marg, & good luck for next week bigTillymint

marg1066 · 23/02/2009 19:21

All well at docs, I'd had a large, lump removed in Oct it was benign, thank god, but all the tests I had done then showed I have a lot of cysts, the dr thinks that what it is because it moves around, We are so pleased, it was hard enough last time. Good luck to you bigTillymint next week, be thinking of you Thank you for all your support xx

wiffey · 23/02/2009 21:23

Glad all OK Marg & hope all OK with you next week bigTillyMint, let us know.

I did a quick 3 miles (45 min) tonight & tried the bum clenching - not a pretty sight for an commuters on their way home down the country lanes I walk - it gives a completley different walking style, far more upright & I put a few arm swings in as well & it made it all feel alot more power walking than oridinary walking, going to try for the 8 miles again on Wednesday so see how that goes.

I also need some good music ideas girls to keep me motiviated while walking, I do listen to the Archers podcast sometimes but a bit difficult to keep your momentum going

funnypeculiar · 24/02/2009 10:40

Great news marg

And well done wifey - please that the buttock clenching went well . I agree - you do suddenly feel like you're doing something that isn't 'normal' walking. I suspect I look like an arse, but hey, no back ache = good!

No good music ideas here, I'm afraid - I train with mates and we just talk. Pretty much constantly. I do like the idea of an Archers catch up though!

bigTillyMint · 24/02/2009 11:00

That's good news Marge I'm not really sure mine is a lump, just more bulgy inside than behind the other nipple - it might have always been like that - just doing the Moonwalk has made me more paranoid

Did try a bit of bum clenching this morning, but not sure I'm really doing it right (and I keep forgetting along the way!) The arm swings are good, but I have to be doing 5 miles an hour for them to feel comfortable, which is pretty hard going!

LOL at Archers - I think that would make me want to give up on the spot!

mrspnut · 24/02/2009 11:16

I shall join in if I may. I'm doing the half moon in Edinburgh and crewing in London.

I walked the full moon in London 2 years ago and crewed last year and I seem to have caught the bug.

I ought to start training soon but the Edinburgh walk isn't for another few months. I have started walking more generally but I need to find some new routes because we have moved house since I trained last time.

bigTillyMint · 24/02/2009 11:55

Welcome mrspnut

Dare I ask if you are doing the half moon in Edinburgh because the full moon was so long? (can you tell I'm feeling nervous?!)

Any top tips for us moonwalk virgins?

mrspnut · 24/02/2009 12:17

It's not because the full moon is too long, more that I don't have enough time to do the amount of training required.

I'm studying for my accountancy qualifications so I have to do huge amounts of work as well as working a few days a week and having a toddler so doing the long walks is a bit of a problem.

I know I can walk 13 miles because I've done a number of walks longer than that so it seemed a whole lot easier.

My top tips are get fitted for a proper pair of trainers now so they are nicely broken in by the time you do the actual walk.

Loads of lip balm, tissues and some really good tunes on your ipod will get you through the night.

Most important of all though is to get the miles on your legs, because it is tough at 3 am when all you want to do is lie down and go to sleep and you still have a few miles to go.

wiffey · 24/02/2009 13:03

Welcome mrspnut, it's nice to have some advice from someone who has done it, a friend who did it a few year ago suggested train as much as you can & then a bit more if you can !!!

morethanyoubargainfor · 24/02/2009 13:19

boo hoo, i am pretty much housebound for the next couple of days as DS was up all last night with tummy bug i still managed a quick 3 miles this mornig tho, and i have started riidng my bike when ever i can and i have become very well aquainted with coleen nolan and her disco routine!

i am still worried about trainers tho, as previoulsy posted i can only wera my HUGE walking boots due to very dodgy ankles(atleast you will all be able to spot me at 10 miles!)

Also do people really just wear it tier bras? not over t-shirt or anything?

marg1066 · 24/02/2009 15:22

I tried the bum clenching on my way to shops, it made me walk faster it was as though I needed the loo!
I think I said before that the Pussycat dolls son 'sway' or by Michael Buble, gets the hips movin and a groovin!
2 More sleeps for Vegas

bigTillyMint · 24/02/2009 17:56

LOL Marg - that's how I look too I think!

Good reasons mrspnut (I wish I'd thought of some excuses......)

Is anybody really able to walk at 5 miles per hour for longer than an hour? 4 miles an hour seems entirely doable, but 5?

wiffey · 24/02/2009 20:52

I'm working on 4 miles an hour as well with ` view to completing in 7hrs (ish)

mrspnut · 25/02/2009 07:46

You will probably be much slower on the night because there are just so many people. I didn't get a decent rhythm going until after about 6 or 7 miles.

bigTillyMint · 25/02/2009 10:09

mrspnut, how do they start you all off? Does everyone start at the same time (and what time is it?!)

When do they send out all that information? (just nosey to know what the night could be like!)

morethanyoubargainfor · 25/02/2009 21:15

yey, managed to get out today in the end as DS was feeling better, he was however in the buggy,(lucky he is small!) so i had dog, child buggy and mud, not a great combination but still managed about 3 miles! i feel so much better now, and it is easier to walk witht e £50 note in your butt if pushing a buggy, trust me i know .

How is everybody else getting on? Marg one more sleep to go, am very of your visit, hope you have a great time.

kiwibella · 25/02/2009 21:21

a few miles left at 3am Do you mean like 20 miles left mrspnut!!

I'm also wishing that I had signed up for the half-moon. I am so focussed on crossing that finish line tho . I am managing to walk about 2-3 miles per day with dd and pushchair. Love the bum clenching which I can feel helping my back.

How is Coleen's fitness video mtybf?? I admit to popping on Davina in the morning for her warm up routine as my daily stretch. I keep meaning to get organised and eat first so I can continue on and do the aerobics work-out. I find if I don't switch it on first thing, I find excuses not to do it during the day. Mostly, cos the curtains are open .

Question: I know someone mentioned having a flash pedometer but, otherwise, how do you measure your walking route??

funnypeculiar · 25/02/2009 21:29

Good to see you all enjoying your bum clenching

Oh, yes mrspnt, I want to know more about how they do the start off too - and start time ... tell us more!

DH keeps vaguely saying he wants to bring the kids in to meet us for a celebratory breakfast afterwards - I'm not sure it's a) feasible (depends what time the whole thing starts/finishes) and b) whether I'll just want to go home & sleep

BigTillymint, I'm working on 4 miles in about 50/55 mins atm ... can't imagine managing 5 miles an hour for any length of time!

In terms of measuring routes, we're using www.runfinder.co.uk/ - you can plan out your route & check distances before hand ... cheaper than a flash pedometer (but not so good for knowing whether you're halfway there yet!)

Have fun in Vegas, marg!!

morethanyoubargainfor · 25/02/2009 21:30

Coleen rocks! i really enjoy it and do it 3 times a week, although she has made me realise that my co-ordination is shocking! i master a rountine doing it one way then they go and change direction! it throws me completly.

I measure most of my walks in the car, so it is very rough as fields miles are longer than road miles iykwim!

Some days i am out walking for 4-5 hours at a time, and walk from village to village so know rough distances. I also know i can walk 1 mile in 15 minutes if at normal pace.

wiffey · 25/02/2009 21:37

Evening ladies, did 8 miles this morning in 130min but I think lost the £50 note after about 3 miles

Legs are aching now as then did a 6 hour work shift with a 5 min sit down

I think funny I'll want champagne if I get over that line regardless of the time of day, not sure about having the kids there though as it means sorting something through the night for them while we're walking.

For route planning I've been using www.mapmyrun.co.uk/ which is really good. Need to sort out a 10 mile for the weekend so will be on there soon.
