giddykipper · 01/01/2009 09:08

I WILL NOT nesh out again like I did last time.

DP has even bought me an iPod Shuffle to run with so that I don't have to lug my big iPod around (oh the inconvenience).

this is what I'm talking about and here's the podcasts I run to.

I'm not starting today though, got about 3 hours sleep last night.

w2r2 in the rain this morning, loved it

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 09/02/2009 11:42

Well done mileniwmffalcon - I love running in the rain too. And at staring at people's crotches!

Some good news from here - I measured the run I did yesterday, and even though it was tough, and I thought I was crawling, it was actually 2.5 miles!!! I hope I didn't put anyone off with my report from yesterday - I just needed a whinge.

Brownsuga - hope you had a nice time skiing.

lexcat · 09/02/2009 15:54

Well done to everyone so far .I hope to be joining you all again in the next few days.
Leg is much better and was going to have ago at running and see how it was, but ended up having to pick dd up from school early (road flooded and still rainning). Now even if I wanted to go out can't as where I run the river has brust it's bank and at least 1/2 the road is under water.
Just my luck just feel I'm starting to make some progess and one thing after the other is stopping me from getting out.

Pennies · 09/02/2009 16:10

Welcome PandaG - no advice to give re. the treadmill as, oddly, my calves often hurt on an incline! Hope you find a remedy soon though.

Ok I fess up, I was a lazy mare yesterday. I rather over indulged on the sauce on Saturday night and wiped out on the ice on the driveway whilst imitating Torvill and Dean so had a rather sore bum and hand. That was the excuse I used, anyway .

Today the weather and conditions here have been hideous. Very cold, pouring rain and residual ice, snow and slush on the pavement. So, wracked with guilt after yesterday's patheticness, I took myself off to the gym and did W5R2 on the treadmill at a 1.5% incline. It was OK, I was ready to finish by the end tho!

WRT to stitches, I once watched an episode of Brainiac ("I can do science, me") where they tried different ways to get rid of stitches and it turns out that just keeping on going is the fastest way to get rid of it.

Keep your eye on me Odette, am flagging slightly at the moment and I need to get going again.

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 09/02/2009 16:54

Oh Pennies - any chance anyone caught your iceskating prowess on film so we can all see it???
So, it's your 20 minute run next isn't it? That will actually be easier to do at the gym than the other ones as it's just power up and go. Are you doing that on Wednesday then? ((see, no excuse for not doing it!!!the pressure's on!!!)

Lexcat - don't overdo it yet.

Pennies · 09/02/2009 17:43

Not caught on film although ironically i did tell the cab driver that he might want to film my skating skills for use on You Tube.

Weather permitting I do want to run this one outside. I don't think treadmill running is anything like on the road, which i why I put an incline on it to give more resistance.

BrownSuga · 10/02/2009 00:30

Hi PandaG, welcome. If you have the 5km as an interim goal, then when you reach that go for the 10km, I'm sure you'll be able to make it. Which gives me something to think about. I thought 5km, sweet, I'll get there then do that 3 times per week, it didn't even occur to me to go further!

Lex, I hope you're recovering, it's a bummer. Rest up and you'll be back in no time.

Pennies, I know exactly what you mean about running on holiday. We're going in about 6 weeks and I'll be packing the running gear. It's very addictive. I don't know why I haven't got into it before.

Wow odette, 25mins! I think I'll go for the vomit option when I reach it, you know a'la Pete Sampras. I'll look like a total sportswoman!

Skiing was good, bit icy and windy. No injuries, well none to me. DH in typical fashion is black and blue, I've told him to give up the boarding or switch to skiing. It's painful to watch, and even more so to hear about

We ended up skating on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa on Saturday too which was great. Imagine the Thames freezing completely then every man and his dog, and a fair few horses, skating around on it. For FREE. We'll def do it again, and keep it in mind for foolhardy winter visitors.

W4R3 tonight, so I can finally move onto W5 on Wednesday. It went really well, so I'm ready to move on.

For the Stitch, I find if I breathe in really deeply for a bit, I can get rid of it. Give that a go.

Happy running this week everyone!

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 10/02/2009 12:29

Pennies

Brownsuga - sounds like you had a wonderful time.

Guess what - I started Week 7 today which is all 25 minute runs (well it could in theory have been a re-run of W6 R3, but I like to view it as W7 R1 ). It was much better than my last run, but still a struggle for the last 15 5 minutes. I think my love affair with Rawbert has run its course. His music this week was absolutely shocking. Think lying next to a pool, drinking cocktails, smoking a joint. It nearly put me to sleep. In fact, I was so cross with him it actually motivated me, if you know what I mean. I think I will use my own music for the next few runs and see how I get on.

Oh, I have invested in one of these which is a headband which covers my ears, which means a) I can wear my baseball cap and still have warm ears and b) it stops my headphones from falling out.

So that's the end of my running this week. Hope to get out again on Saturday, so I will be checking in for the rest of your updates in the meantime (in a scary, big brother sort of way!).

Good luck.

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 10/02/2009 12:32

On the subject of running more than 5km, I am really keen to push this as far as I can, but obviously with reasonable goals.
I want to be running 40 minutes by Easter - anyone else in???

PandaG · 10/02/2009 13:33

thanks for all the welcomes and advice. I am totally unconvinced that I can do 10k, as am overweight and very unfit.

Did do W1 R2 this morning though, before college, and then walked to college from the gym ( maybe a couple of miles) so feeling pleased with myself.

Hope to check in with progress report very soon!

EyeballsintheSky · 10/02/2009 13:48

Can I join too please? I sort of joined one late last year but never actually got as far as putting on trainers! Away till Monday but intend to start then so am marking this thread till then.

Pennies · 10/02/2009 14:11

Well I"m thinking about doing the BPA10k on the 25th May. It's in St James Park. If anyone else is thinking about pushing beyond 5km then perhaps we could do it togehter?

Pennies · 10/02/2009 14:11

BUPA 10km.

Pennies · 10/02/2009 14:12

St James Park, in London.

I'm obviously still recovering from yesterday's run!

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 10/02/2009 18:14

Ooh Pennies - I may be up for that (may being the operative word).

Pennies · 10/02/2009 20:23

Odette, I was just looking back at your earlier posts on this thread and I think it is amazing that just a few weeks ago you saying this: "By AmIOdetteOrOdile on Fri 09-Jan-09 13:28:35

I have done W2 Run 1 and I have to say I wanted to lie down half way through" and now you're doing 25 min runs. That's a real achievement!

Are you still doing WW too? I'm thinking about doing it online - is it any good? The thing I like about doing it face to face is all the little books and stuff you get which is just so portable and you can look things up whilst you're in restaurants and all that. Sadly don't ave time to go face to face. Do you still get sent all the packs if you do it online? Do you still get a calculator?

Pennies · 10/02/2009 20:25

BUPA 10k site if anyone's interested

rolandbrowning · 10/02/2009 20:42

Hello can I join? I have got up to 28 mins but have not been for over a week due to ds being ill. I am feeling a bit fat (well very fat) at the moment and often feel a bit self concious when running (sad I know) I am doing the manchester 10k on may 17th so I need to sort myself out as I really really want to complete it. It might be an idea for me to try the podcasts. I'm being daft really cause I love running. Need to lose about 4 stone though

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 10/02/2009 20:52

Hello! This thread has inspired me
I downloaded the podcasts and hit the treadmill today (I need to run in the gym as it has a creche!). However due to some technical glitch I had downloaded weeks 2-9 but not 1! (stupid emoticon) so as I have some baseline fitness I decided to start on W2 and if necessary repeat it.
Before I got loved up and had a baby I did a couple of triathlons and would like to get fit again to do those, this is the first step!

Odette - reading your posts has got me fired up to do this. Well done on your progress you must feel so pleased with yourself.

mileniwmffalcon · 11/02/2009 08:55

morning all, hello new people

w2r3. it was absolutely beautiful out there this morning, bright and frosty, such beautiful light, the photographer in me wanted to race home and grab a camera or 2.

i found it hard going though, my knees were complaining for the first half (usually the best bit) until i finally warmed up, down to 10 miles i must have walked yesterday no doubt. and my route for this week was just a fraction too short so i've had to slow my last walk right down so i didn't run out of park before the end of the last run!

i'll be sad to see the back of the flock of funky bees though, they always cheered me up on the warmup

Pennies · 11/02/2009 10:13

Hello Rolandborwning and LJLOB (love your name BTW). Welcome!

Just did W5R3 - the 20 minuter. Or that's what is was supposed to be. In my case it wasn't much like that at all. I reckon that in total I ran for about 18mins, with 3 x 45seconds or so walking bits.

Not sure why I couldn't do it. Maybe the fact it was still very very icy so I wasn't relaxed, or that I had to do my least favourite route because of the conditions, or because I did W5R2 on a treadmill (which I think is much easier than in RL) or because I simply just didn't have it in me.

I think I need to have another go at it - maybe twice over the next four days. I'm a stubborn mare and HAVE to get it right before I move onto W6.

V. cross and disappointed with myself, because I really thought I could do it.

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 11/02/2009 10:30

Pennies, be cross by all means, but don't be disappointed with yourself. I don't know whether we're having a "six week itch" or whether the weather is finally taking its toll, but I think we're all sttuggling a little. Give it another go over the next couple of days. You are more than capable of doing it!! Rah rah rah!!!

As far as WW goes, yes I am still doing it (although have had a bad week this past week) (hmm, maybe tied in with having a bad running week too....). I do it online and I have to say I love it. You don't get sent any of the packs, you just register everything directly into your online daily planner. There is a calculator there that lets you work out the points of everything, you just need the calories, sat fat and portion size. It also allows you to 'bank' some extra points every day, so you can save them for a splurge at the weekend if you so desire. I have lost about half a stone since the start of the year, but still have another one to go. I've never done it face to face, so I don't know if it's any better or worse than going to meetings. I do know that I am my own worst critic, and when I record my weight every week am disappointed if I haven't lost the requisite two pounds. I think you can get a free trial so it may be worth a go.

Welcome to Eyeballs and Roland and Libras (and thank you for your kind words Libras ).

Now where the hell is giddykipper??? I am going to hunt her down.....

rolandbrowning · 11/02/2009 11:25

Thanks everyone, I am going to try to do a 28 minuter today. I know I can do it, I've done it before, but sometimes I am I am fighting against my inner voice that tells me I can't do it. The last time I went for a run I was tired at about 21 mins, but wasn't thinking about stopping, then a man overtook me, thankfully he was running not walking, and I just stopped immediately.

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 11/02/2009 11:27

Well Roland, if it helps to have an extra bit of pressure, do it for me, to give me some extra motivation!!!

MJreturns · 11/02/2009 11:29

Hi everyone. I would love to be able to do this too, I have downloaded the weekly plan and have it stored on my computer, but that is as far as I have got!

How do you all fit it in? Do you go out and run in daylight around the area you live (this is probably what I would have to do and don't know if I could face it as people would see me!), or do you get up at the crack of dawn?

I would be grateful for anyone who could give me a helping hand. I lost 3 stone last year and am still plodding on as I would love to lose another stone, but I know that I need to exercise!
