I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

no goo good luck

the Twinks are impressive as usual

Twink · 03/01/2009 22:28

If you start steady, and don't get carried away early in the excitement, I bet you'll amaze yourself.

Towards the end, focus on the person in front, imagine you're attached to them by a rope and mentally reel them in. You'll pass them and can latch onto the next one. I think that's advice from Bob Glover's Runners Handbook, it's helped me more than once to have a final spurt.

moondog · 03/01/2009 22:29

Can I come back in?
Haven't been running for a few months but stiull going to aerobics and doing lots of walking. Did a 10k yesterday in 60 mins. though which is fastest time ever. How weird is that???!
Legs killing today though.

Nothing makes me feel better about myself or the stresses and challenges in my life than a good run in the Welsh mountain air.

Love the story of the father and wheelchair user son.Amazing! Always wondered how one runs without using the arms though?

mrsmike · 03/01/2009 22:29

Thanks again. There's lots of mrss on here aren't there. More than 1 Mrs I mean.

mrsmike · 03/01/2009 22:32

Moondog have you never run with a pushchair? You can really get in to the rhythmn, its not bad at all.

moondog · 03/01/2009 22:41

Really? God, wouldn't have dreamt of it.I run/ran to escape the ties and demands of small children on me. one of the best parts is the space and freedom and silence.

MrsWednesday · 03/01/2009 22:43

Huge amounts of luck for tomorrow mrsmike! Like everyone else says, it is a massive achievement to run ten miles, no matter how fast you do it. Love the statistic from Twink, as well as the rope analogy, will bear them in mind when I'm struggling.

Agree that running in the fresh air is the best way to feel better physically and mentally - I live in running distance of some proper Yorkshire scenery and on a cold fresh day like today it was such a joy to be out.

Twink, sfxmum is right you are a very impressive family.

TWF, fingers crossed.

moondog · 03/01/2009 22:46

It makes me smirk to see ads for expensive creams nad scrubs nad treatments. They will never make you feel as good as a good run.Why don't more people know this? I started reluctantly as getting older and wanting to feel (and look) ok but now I need to do it to feel good.

mrsmike · 03/01/2009 22:48

Oh yes re pushchair running, not 1st choice, more like 10th choice but not as physically impossible as you might think.

sfxmum · 03/01/2009 22:56

I think if I ever have another child I will have to get a jogging stroller or whatever they call it, have only regained some sanity after 3yrs and once dd started pre school and I am able to go out during the week

precious headspace I find

MrsWednesday · 03/01/2009 22:56

Would also agree that running is the only opportunity to escape the endless noise in my life.

MoreSpamThanGlam · 03/01/2009 22:57

I am new. I have never evr run before (ok when I was a child). I hate running and want to learn to love it.

My friend sets herself a new challenge every year. This year its to get me to do a 10k run in October.

I am almost 40 and overweight.

I tried running 2 days ago but the cramp in my foot after 5 minutes was so bad I had to limp home. My foot is still really swollen and painful.

I dont want excuses I just want to run.

Please help me, bearing in mind the above, Im sorry I am not a proper runner.

moondog · 03/01/2009 22:57

I do like a bit of Led Zepp on my iPod though.
Fab

MrsWednesday · 03/01/2009 22:58

What sort of running shoes do you have Spam? Are they decent ones?

MoreSpamThanGlam · 03/01/2009 23:01

Um, well I just got a pair of Reebok running shoes in the sale as I have quite wide feet and the assistant said my existing ones (I wore them there) were next to useless with no support

They feel like the is more room and very light.

sfxmum · 03/01/2009 23:02

hi spam this might help

also this

sfxmum · 03/01/2009 23:06

and another
they should all have training plans

MoreSpamThanGlam · 03/01/2009 23:15

Thanks sfx! Great sites...fab info.

I think just took off 2 days ago and ran. not a great idea it seems. Although I feel a bit of a fraud by just walking at first.

I have said I will start on Monday night, 3 nights a week, then dog walking in between.

Is there anything I can do to prevent my feet from cramping? I used to get this when I played tennis too. I have quite flat feet (what a stunner I sound!).

I have never smoked and am overweight because I eat too much and do no exercise now that I am studying for my degree.

Hello, I am a lapsed runner, who is desperate to get back into it. Spent most of 2006 building my stamina, doing 10ks , and promised to do a half in Oct last year but...little ff got in the way. It seems like a feeble excuse now, but I felt SO rough for the first few months I was pregnant that I couldn't face it, andby the time I felt better I was too big andtoo commited to my new hobby of lying on the sofa to get back into it.
So, little ff is now 10 mo, and I am feeling unfit and hideous. Inspired by this thread, I am dragging my arse out for a run tomorrow. Please flame me if I come here tomorrow with a crappy excuse.

greenlawn · 03/01/2009 23:45

Good luck Mrsmike, though I hope you're in bed resting.

In some ways its cooler to come last (you get the biggest cheer of all!) than it is to come in the middle. Don't worry about the hills, I always find they are a bit of a welcome change of scene and less tiring on the legs than endless flat.

Twink · 04/01/2009 09:07

Ffrecklefairy, this thread doesn't flame people! But, you won't need it anyway as you're going to go out today, have a go and then let us know how you got on.

Off you go, put your kit on and get out of the door. NO excuses needed

robino · 04/01/2009 09:28

Good luck Mrs W (although I suspect I'm too late!)

Frecklefairy - I too am going to drag my arse out on a run today. Not been out since 21st Dec and am depressed by the thought that the progress I had made may well be lost.

Spam - any chance of finding out if there is a group out there near you that has a beginners course? It's what kept me motivated when I made the decision to start and now I've joined the "not beginners group" I'm almost guaranteed to get out at least once a week no matter what else is going on.

Right, as soon as OH has finished his lie in I'm off. Think I might just try the route I used to walk/run when I first started - it's only 2 miles but it might not make me feel so depressed because I remember only running for one minute a time on it!
