I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

Thanks for the Hill advice Twink.

We have a long incline, pretty well all the same gradient to the top, and I have cracked it two or three times, but I have wimped out. However I like the challenge of posting on here so if I get out later, I'll report on the results.

I'm fine up on the moors where it is really varied and am good at shortish rocky inclines...oh flip, I want to go out NOW! Lol

SmilesLikeNoOther · 22/11/2008 17:13

I owe you a pint Twink, I did it, and am grinning from ear to ear. [contented emoticon].

sfxmum · 22/11/2008 17:36

smiles glad you had a good time

had very cautious and ever so frustrating couple of miles today but at least not getting worst.
will try again tomorrow even if short run again

Twink · 22/11/2008 20:04

Wahey! You will become a hill Goddess Smiles. Good effort.

I'm probably preaching to the converted here, but do you keep a log of what you do? I've not being doing lately but as I bit dh & dd's heads off this morning, realised I need to get back to tracking my stuff as I'd not done anything since Wednesday and was VERY grumpy

Particularly harsh on dh as he can't do what he'd like to do then got sh*t from me too

SmilesLikeNoOther · 22/11/2008 20:21

I don't keep a log, is there one on-line?
Sorry you had a tough time with your Dh. I get very stressed if I miss a couple of days...so I don't. Have said before though, being self-employed makes it easy for me.
Why couldn't DH do what he wanted if I am not prying?

Twink · 22/11/2008 20:23

Saggars, you're very quiet, are you ok?

sfxmum, forgot to ask the 'obvious' things, are you using ice/heat and keeping your leg up when you get a chance - yeah, I know you're a mum so you don't get to sit down but ykwim!

TBH I suspect everyone is busy ptsl at this:dodgy work episodes

Fantastic thread but get youselves out there!!!

SmilesLikeNoOther · 22/11/2008 20:25

sfxmum. twink is right about heat and cold and I swear by 'curaheat' pads....they are heavenly on injuries.

sfxmum · 22/11/2008 20:40

hi I keep a sort of log but not very detailed more about mood and distance and pace than anything else

been doing heat/cold elevation but not as much as I should will keep at it thanks

MrsWednesday · 22/11/2008 20:44

I live on top of a hill so whenever I go out I always have to finish on a hill. Best thing I've learnt (through trial and painful error!) is to keep your head up and shoulders back - it really helps the breathing. I tended to hunch over to tackle them and it definitely made it harder.

HarrogateMum, good luck tomorrow! In my last 10k I did it in 53 minutes but I was a lot fitter then as I'd been training for the Leeds Half Marathon. Not feeling very confident about tomorrow so just getting to the end will be an achievement I think

I track online here:

good run guide

I think you can have a free month's trial before you have to pay for membership (tenner a year).

Running outside is much better than having to stare at yourself whilst running on treadmill - agree with those that say it's easier to go further outside as it's not as boring.

Twink · 22/11/2008 20:49

Smiles, I use an old fashioned paper version, a running log book by Nathan but this runners world thread suggests a number of online versions.

You've not missed anything on this thread about my dh, I've mentioned things a couple of times elsewhere and I asked a few questions about chemo lately, quite happy to talk about it as it helps me sometimes to be able to talk to nrl people.
I don't want to derail this thread cos we are runners but DH's story may help people to get out and run. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in August and in October we were told it was inoperable as he has secondary metastases and we were told 'he won't live to be old'. He is, truly, the strongest, most amazing person I know, as he drags himself to the gym to do his workout as it helps him shiggle food down and digest it when most people would be curled up in bed feeling grotty - quite rightly so, chemo's grim. He's furious he can't do what he'd like to do so we've agreed he'll set 'chemotherapy' personal bests instead of ordinary ones. He's managed 36 mins at 12.5km/h 3 times now which is great under the circs and lots of people would be delighted with it at any time. He's not !!

I'm off for a long one in the morning, look forward to hearing the race reviews - remember, focus and push that little bit harder than you are comfortable with - good luck !!

SmilesLikeNoOther · 22/11/2008 22:31

I am humbled Twink, and have nothing but the utmost admiration for you, your DH and your family . I often run with people that I admire in mind and the next challenge that I face will be for you and yours.

Enjoy your run tomorrow, I think many people will be with you all the way.

Twink · 23/11/2008 14:19

By heck it was cold out there this morning. Managed 6 miles before the lure of a hot shower won over the sleet.

How did the 10k go guys ?

Thought of you Smiles - we ran up an enormous hill, then because the rest of the group hadn't got to the top and it was too cold to hang around, went back down again and did half of it again....

ambercat · 23/11/2008 15:56

Thanks mrswednesday and others who recommended thegoodrunguide, have joined on the months free trial and it looks great, better than map my run which would never let me join for some reason!

Hope everyone who was racing today was sucessful, have been thnking of you!

No running for me over the weekends as i'm by myself and noone to have the children. Looking forward to trying some interval training tomorrow as recommended by a friend but ds1 is feeling ill so may be off school tomorrow for him feeling rough but also for me as i really want to get out there!!

MrsWednesday · 23/11/2008 16:00

It was v hard getting out the house this morning, when I opened the curtains and saw dark grey skies and sleet on the ground I nearly went back to bed! But it actually turned out to be a pretty good day for a race - did it 49:18 (had set myself a secret target of getting under 50 minutes), pushed myself as hard as I could and thought I was going to be sick when I crossed the line .

Twink, you must need the head space you get from running more than anyone, with everything that you and your DH are going through. He sounds like such an amazing man, to run when going through chemo. We are all here to listen if you need to talk, or to talk about completely different stuff if you need somewhere to get away from it all too.x

HarrogateMum · 23/11/2008 16:24

oh my God Mrs Wednesday, I am so amazed at your time - how good is that!!

I was rubbish, feel so annoyed with myself. The last one I did (which was my first) was in September and I was just over the hour. Today I was 5 minutes slower....I have no idea how you get round in under 50 minutes - I have nothing but admiration for you!

BlessThisMess · 23/11/2008 16:37

I managed a good but short run yesterday. Just over 2 miles in 20 minutes - 2 minutes quicker than I did the same run on Wednesday! I meant to go out again today but the cold has got the better of me and I wimped out. Went to bed for a nap instead!

MrsWednesday · 23/11/2008 16:42

Oh no, you should be very proud of yourself!! Bloody hell, it was a hard day to get out for a race - you were there and you finished it and that is a great achievement. Hope you are having well deserved cake and wine this evening.

When I did my first 10k this year (the Jane Tomlinson one in June) I did it in 1 hour 3 minutes. Think the only way I've been able to improve my time is by running further than 10k when training for the half marathon, and doing too many bloody hills (think I might move to Hull, much flatter over there )

SmilesLikeNoOther · 23/11/2008 17:43

Didn't get out today....Ds wouldn't go out in the cold, and got tied up with house stuff, and am frankly too tired now although the mind is willing.

Well done to all that did.

OrmIrian · 23/11/2008 17:45

Have found the solution to running easily. Sunshine, quite cold, bright sky, wind blowing, Mozarts Symphony no 40 on the MP3. Wonderful effortless exhilirating run.

Now I'm going down with a cold though...

Twink · 23/11/2008 18:06

Great result MrsW, well done, a PB in weather like today's is fab, and sub 50 is very respectable indeed. HarrogateMum, don't beat yourself up, as MrsW said, the fact you went out and did it at all is a great achievement. Muscles don't like being pushed when it's cold.

Good to hear that some of you had some decent weather! OrmIrian, your run sounded blissful.

Can I recommend echinacea for when you think you're starting a cold, I'm not on commission but it seems to work for us most of the time. I also find I suffer less from respiratory problems if I run outside rather than on a treadmill. May be all complete tosh but hey, if it helps...

Have a good week all, happy running.

[Thanks for the messages re dh, it's nice to have support around]

OrmIrian · 23/11/2008 18:10

Ahhh twink. Just saw that about your DH. So sorry. Life stinks sometimes

thesockmonsterofdoom · 23/11/2008 18:36

Hi, can I join you I did the couch potato to 5km in March, did rfl and Great yorkshire run10k, I then went off my training for a bit, I have another 10k in 2 weeks, I did an 8k yesterday with quite a lot of hill work, time was about an hour but I did have to walk a bit bit at the start as the hills were just too steep.
I am hopinh to train up for a half marathon next year, i love running, just getting time to myself with my thoughts and my music.
Twink your dh sounds amazing.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 23/11/2008 18:37

Not checking in here much - as I'm not running much lol. Glad to see everyone else is carrying the baton on though.

Twink been thinking about you and dh, glad to read during my catch up that your own tests were OK. His 'chemo PBs' made me smile. I always think of your 'good, better, best' targets even at the gym

MrsWednesday · 23/11/2008 18:42

Sign up for one asap sockmonster (welcome by the way ), then you've got motivation for dragging yourself out when it's cold and dark. I'm doing a half marathon in February for that reason.

Sounds like you are well on the way already with your training.

HarrogateMum · 23/11/2008 18:55

MrsWednesday - do you do interval training at all? My running partner reckons it is the way forward and that we should be doing sprints/slow bits when we run to build up speed....? I just feel like when I am plodding along (obviously fairly slowly) that I just cant go any faster or my chest will explode!
