I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

Sorry Orm, sparkles are staying firmly at home tonight but I'm booked in for tomorrow pm. Have told dh I'm going and he'll nag me about it!

BlessThisMess · 14/11/2008 23:47

Argh, I haven't been out for 2.5 weeks! I don't know what's happened really. Partly that I seem to alternate a good run (my best so far is 30 mins non-stop) and then a bad one where I have to walk after 10-15 mins. Then I get disheartened and don't feel like going again.

Then last weekend I hurt my back carrying DD (age 4) - nearly passed out from shock or pain, not sure which. Back is now niggling at me, but nevertheless was determined to go out this weekend and have today developed a rotten cold. Urgh, I am feeling so flabby!

sfxmum · 15/11/2008 11:05

bless sorry you are feeling rotten but a longish walk is better than nothing and if you run/ walk it will soon be more running than walking

went out for a very gingerly slow 3 miles leg hurt/ twinged a bit but not enough to stop me, must see physio asap I think

let's see how it goes tomorrow
it is really frustrating when the rest of me was feeling like pushing harder and my leg just screeching NO

hope everyone is ok

nappyaddict · 15/11/2008 11:22

BTM I usually have to stop after about 20 mins i am hoping it will get better.

OrmIrian · 16/11/2008 12:47

5.6 miles this morning. But it nearly killed me. I am not enjoying this.

MissChief · 16/11/2008 15:11

just managed 40 mins non-stop, 4 miles?? (so tempted to walk a bit), drizzle helped, actually, quite cooling, just made me look like I'd been dragged thro a hedge backwards no doubt!
sfx - screeching legdoesn't sound good, guess you're not overdoing it?
5.6 miles sounds good - do you have a pedometer? I have one but not sure how accurate it is

sfxmum · 16/11/2008 15:51

Hi all have been out again today for 3 miles twinges but ok had a bath afterwards, hope to rest properly before going out again wednesday

mischief I use map my run
to work out distances more accurate that pedometer because that relies on length of step.

Orm hope you start feeling better soon

hatwoman · 16/11/2008 17:23

top tip for getting an extra mile or so in - we all took the dog for a walk today and one dd took her bike, so I put my kit and trainers on and had lots of fun running races with dog/dd on bike/dd2 running (she's very fast!) - it was really lovely - v. exhilarating - we all came back with rosy cheeks (except the dog...). It didn;t really count as a proper run - lots of stopping and starting, some sprinting, little bit of walking - but was really good fun. I'm never going to go a family "walk" again. running kit every time from now on.

re running sites I love www.goodrunguide.co.uk - there's a small sub but as well as measuring runs you can keep a log and a training planner.

Twink · 16/11/2008 17:32

finally managed a run outside for the first time in what feels like ages but probably is around a fortnight!

Did just under 6 miles (according to Map My Run, cheers sfx),leg hurt all the way but didn't get any worse and now we know what's up, I can run regardless. Really feel better for it although I could so easily have rolled over and gone back to sleep..

What's everyone planning for this week?

I'm hoping for gym & Body Balance tomorrow, running club Tues & Wed, short run with friend on Thurs then a rest or spinning class on Friday! The reality may be somewhat different..

futurity · 16/11/2008 18:37

managed a slooooow 5 or so miles yesterday. was in a grumpy mood and just couldn't be bothered really!

MrsWednesday · 16/11/2008 20:40

Oh I use mapmyrun and the good run guide, they are fab. I like the log book on the good run guide, it helps me to realise that I have improved a bit since I started using it.

Went out for a steady 6.5 miles today, was a glorious day for running - sunny but crisp. Have got a 10k 'race' on Sunday, it's a very flat and fast course so I'm aiming for a decent time but we'll see (she says swigging a glass of red wine )

Sfxmum, sorry to hear about your injury! Is it feeling better today?

Ormirian, you are doing so well to be doing those distances after an injury! It must be v frustrating trying to get back to previous standard.

Talking about carrying stuff further down the thread - I've got some knee-length legging type running shorts that have a zip pocket at the back which has room for a phone, keys etc.

So impressed with everyone who goes out 5+ times a week, I can barely manage once a week at the minute, I'm rubbish in comparison, and my legs aren't up to it (especially my old knees).

Twink, thanks for those links, I've already spotted a few things to go on the list (especially a sports bra - had severe chaffing after the half marathon I did, was the most painful thing about the whole experience). What is the matter with the hamstring, did the physio say?

mou · 16/11/2008 20:48

Got out for a run last night, felt really poorly so made slow, but steady time.
But nearly home and there was a group of drunken 'youths' so I dodged off the pavement to run around them and a couple of them heckled me which I ignored, but one of the last chaps swung his fist out at me!!
He missed but I was stunned. Some people!
I wanted to stop and say 'but I'm a laydee', but thought better of it.

Anyway, better night tonight and good time on 10k.

Orm I really feel for you. You must be so frustrated.

I find it really hard not to change my rhythm to the beat of the music I am listening to and am loving running to Bloc Party at the moment.

fishie · 16/11/2008 21:21

9km yesterday, it was very windy. two walks today. not looking good for any exercise next week i have got a lot of work stuff.

i know it really isn't good to do 3 days on/4 days off but since that is what i end up with how to do it? am usually doing 5k/9k/6k.

fishie · 16/11/2008 21:23

and mou how awful, next time call police.

sfxmum · 16/11/2008 21:31

mou that is awful

sort of glad I generally only have to contend with dogs

but having said that a few weeks back I was out running at a relatively quiet time, 2 runners were coming towards me, ahead of them a man with a dog
the a woman came from behind me on her bike all very nice and leisurely
then the dog guy threw a stick across the path of the cyclist then the dog goes after it and she fell off her bike trying to avoid hitting the dog

the runners stopped to help but the dog owner just kept walking as if nothing had happened

Hi watchtheworld you could start here

or walk 3min / run 1min (5X)
then walk 2 min/ run 1min
walk 2 min / run 2min

and so on usually helps

am sure other will offers helpful advice

No specific advice watchtheworld (love the name btw), but just take it steady, set little goals and enjoy. I started off like you (allthough I have run on and off since a teenager, but lost the opportunity when DC 2 was born), and have made huge progress since march and am now completely addicted hooked .

And welcome to the thread.

mou · 17/11/2008 00:11

Thanks for sympathy sfxmum and fishie. I suspect they were spoiling for a fight and thought I was bloke as I do look a bit 'blokey', get called 'mate' and 'dude', although that is no excuse.

OrmIrian · 17/11/2008 11:41

mou! How horrible. Why do there have to be such w*ankers in the world?

MissChief · 17/11/2008 12:30

I will go out today (rather than stay in the warm eating chocolate...)
MOu - terrible, can't believe someone would do that to an innocent female runner, you got a safer alternative to run?? Good for you keeping going tho.
SFX - mapmyrun is fab! Thx for the recommendation, shall inspire me to other places, hopefully. Anyone else tried it?

OrmIrian · 17/11/2008 12:31

on mapmyrun ,has anyone noticed that you can't do satellite image on the map routing anymore? Or am I doing something wrong? It used to be an option on settings I'm sure.

sfxmum · 17/11/2008 12:36

think you are right Ormlrian it changed recently as I recall from the US to UK one, but might be mistaken not using it much lately as have mapped my usual routes.

hatwoman · 17/11/2008 12:43

you can get satellite images on goodrunguide.co.uk. also gmap-pedometer here
