55 mins pilates class
Country park walk - more of a plod than a brisk walk, as it was boiling. I persevered and got the miles in though.
72/300

WearyAuldWumman · 08/04/2026 22:53

Warm up, for a couple of minutes.
Side raises and biceps curls using - I thought - 7.5 kg weights...and then I realised I'd used one 5kg and one 7.5kg! No wonder the left hand side was easier!

45 minute Senior Flex Class

Some cardio:fast feet, punches...
Used two sets of 3.75kg weights for upper body, including standing overhead presses and seated low rows.

Sumo squats with medium weight bands.
Squats, sit to stand with one weight.
Wall push-ups, knee bends, etc.
Stretches.

Hello, could I join you all please? For the first 41 years of my life I was obese and didn’t exercise at all. After losing a ton of weight last year and getting to a healthy BMI, I have managed to gradually incorporate lots of exercise into my daily routine and I am absolutely loving it! Would like to post here to see what others are doing and keep myself on track. My main goals now are to maintain my current weight, improve my fitness and strength, and avoid losing muscle mass.

Heres my week so far:

Monday
yoga (20 mins at home)
5k run
Long walk
22,000 steps in total

Tuesday
Yoga class (1 hour)
Barre class (45 mins)
Long walk
20.000 steps in total

Today
Yoga (20 mins at home)
5k run
Brisk walk
Mat Pilates class (1 hour)
18,000 steps in total

I do strength training as well, following Caroline Girvan videos on YouTube but haven’t managed to do one since Sunday. Will definitely do it tomorrow. I also do a dumbbell class on a Tuesday usually but it was cancelled this week.

dreamlove · 09/04/2026 00:07

NC again but I used to post with Peloton stuff. I had a huge 8hr operation for endometriosis May last year and couldn’t exercise consistently for about 9 months before it due to the pain. Then got made redundant twice in 6 months
Trying to get back consistent
Sunday - 20 mins upper body class
tuesday - 20 mins reconnect spin and a stretch

dreamlove · 09/04/2026 00:11

Posted too soon. I will say the exercise I had previously done must have helped, I only needed assistance out of bed the first time, was discharged 17hrs post op, no painkillers and back at work after 3 weeks
i forced myself to walk standing up properly and not hunched over too

This is what they did (my bowel was folded in half and the endo was everywhere) the bowel surgeon operated for 3.5hrs too and I had 7 incisions
Adhesiolysis, mobilisation of sigmoid and rectum, bilateral ureterolysis, drainage of bilateral endometriomas, stripping of cysts walls, temporary suspension of ovaries, excision of endometriosis, restoration of anatomy, dye hydrotubation, removal of appendix, mirena IUD insertion, estimated blood lost 400ml

WearyAuldWumman · 09/04/2026 00:27

@dreamlove

That sounds like a nightmare!

@dreamlove

That sounds like a nightmare!

They did an MRI about 6 months prior to my op and planned a day case, about 3hr surgery, bowel surgeon won’t be needed but on call…
I went down at 9.30am, woke up at 6pm very confused with multiple missed calls off my poor dad who was expecting to collect me at lunch!
it was worth it to get out of the agonising pain though, my surgeon said I must have felt like I was in labour every single day

WearyAuldWumman · 09/04/2026 09:59

I've not been through it myself, but similar happened to my SIL: hysterectomy only, but bowl specialist on call...

Woke up and a section of her colon had been removed because it had been adhering to the uterus.

Consultant: "You look a lot better than you have a right to!"

I'm sorry that you've been through this.

FurForksSake · 09/04/2026 10:35

Morning all! Sounds like some huge things people have been through. Amazing to think what we go through.

my hydro got cancelled, I’m now thinking about what exercise I can do this evening instead. I’m going out for the day so I might be too tired but I need to try and do something.

Hope you're better soon, @stilldumdedumming .

stilldumdedumming · 09/04/2026 12:06

Thank you. I have also been flattened by my ds escaping his abuser but with all the police and social services drama that comes with it. And then very little actual progress. There is not much joy at the moment but he’s doing well.

@dreamloveI am so sorry you went through that and it must have been building up for years?
@MummyInTheNecropolis welcome. That’s a lot of steps! I can’t really walk properly due to disability but I’m trying to increase this

Comtesse · 09/04/2026 12:23

Hello @MummyInTheNecropolis and @dreamlove (I’ve had 2 surgeries for endometriosis too!).

Yesterday I had my own musical theatre class too like @WearyAuldWumman and danced around luke a loon to songs from Cabaret - good grief, proper dancers must be fit!

I couldn't get into today's class, but I'm booked in for Tuesday and Thursday next week.

The trainer tried splitting the class in half so that we could do an 'entrance' from either side of the studio after learning a new routine...

It's the first time in my nearly 66 years that someone has shouted "Tits and teeth!" as I attempted to sashay across a dance a floor.

WearyAuldWumman · 11/04/2026 21:35

Yesterday:

Active for Life

10+ HIIT, treadmill - max 7.3 kmph.
Had a chat with trainer about leg extension problems.

Did leg curls with 26 kg - 3 of 10. Only 19 kg with leg extensions but after talking with trainer did them without fully straightening my leg. Oh, the difference! None of this "Are my kneecaps going to pop sideways?" business.

The trainer says I'll still get the benefit.

Senior Flex, 45 minutes.

Cardio, leg band work, seated upper body work with 3.7 weights, including overhead presses.

Cut the front hedge. It's taller than me and I realised that, firstly, my grip strength is better and, secondly, reaching above me with a weight is easier than it was. Yay!

54

Only did a bit more hedge cutting today, so can't really count that - cut the reverse of the front hedge and of one of the boundary hedges and evened up the top of both. (I had cut the top and front of the front hedge yesterday, but realised that the top was a bit off.)

Skybluegreen · 12/04/2026 11:45

Hi all, I’ve just found this thread but it might be handy to help me stay accountable.

When I turned 45 last year I decided it was time to get my health & fitness in order. I was massively overweight and although I went to the gym it was a very halfhearted effort. Anyway almost 1 year later I’ve lost 4 stone and am the strongest I’ve ever been. I aim for 4 sessions per week at the gym and focus on strength workouts (which I love) with a bit of cardio thrown in there (which I hate 😆)

I’m having a super proud moment today. At today’s gym sesh I lifted my heaviest ever weight on all exercises. Chest press, shoulder press, back row, squats & RDL’s all totally smashed! There’s still a lot of room for improvement but at least I can see the difference from a year ago.

60 workouts so far this year.

@Skybluegreen welcome! What an impressive post; really inspirational!

im only managing my physio at the moment, hydrotherapy got cancelled and I really need to get myself some sort of gym membership and a pt to get me going. I’ve got fibromyalgia and hyper mobility and arthritis so I need a specialist.

That's the good thing about the Active for Life class - we're all on individual programmes which evolve with us. We were mainly originally referred to the Active programme by our physios or other healthcare practitioners and then transferred into the A for L drop-in class after 6 or 12 weeks.

It is possible to self-refer when there are available spaces. I wonder whether your physio might know of a similar programme? In Fife, there's some kind of arrangement between Fife NHS and Fife Leisure Trust. It means that we also get a reduced gym membership once we've completed the first set of 6 or 12 sessions. However, I'll get even more off this year when I finally get my State Pension. (Woot! As young people no longer say.)

FurForksSake · 12/04/2026 17:16

@WearyAuldWumman I go to private physio and private hydro as nhs physio here is terrible. I might see if there is a self referral program though! Thanks for sharing the information it’s a great nudge for me.

WearyAuldWumman · 12/04/2026 17:21

You're doing really well, @Skybluegreen. .

It's taken me more than two years to lose 26lbs. However, my grip strength has most definitely improved and my muscle and bone density are now at the top end of normal for an oldie.

I started doing 2kg side raises and I'm now up to 7kg. 7.5 for biceps curls and low rows. Not brilliant, but much better than where I started.

My shrugs and farmer's walk/carry are currently being done with two 18kg weights.

The bad news is that I'm still morbidly obese round the middle - the rest of me is normal. The last time I lost weight it took me 3 or 4 yrs to lose more than 4 stones. This time round, I had more than 5 to lose.

Like you, I much prefer weight training, though I'm having fun in the Musical Theatre Fitness class and there's no doubt that the Pilates and Stretch classes have been beneficial: I can now walk downstairs normally (in spite of my patella alta and arthritis). I obviously need to shove less food down my throat, though I have been trying to prioritise protein.

Last time round, I was on the Atkins' Diet and going to the gym two days a week. This time round I'm just cutting back and going to the gym as often as I can. Normally, I manage to get to two Active classes, two Senior Flex classes and Pilates - other classes when I can get booked. I use the apparatus in the gym between classes.

There's now a Musical Theatre fitness class followed by Stretch at another Fife Leisure gym 15 miles away and my membership is good for that too, so I've started to add that to my schedule.

Now that I'm old, it's harder going in one way...but my time is now my own so I might as well make the most of it.

It might be that your physio will at least know of any programmes. Fingers crossed.

I’ve found one and sent an email to ask for more information! My gp will do the referral if I can get the information and the form.

Today marks the end of my Easter holiday, back to work tomorrow so decided to take it easy and rest a bit. I had a short run this morning (3.5k), did some yoga afterwards (20 mins) and had a long leisurely walk this afternoon. I intended to remain glued to the sofa this evening now before returning to normal routine tomorrow!

I need to buy some new dumbbells. I currently have a pair of 3kg and a pair of 6kg. Both are too light for me now, I need heavier. What would you recommend I go for? I don’t want to buy ones that will quickly become too light for me again but also don’t want to go too heavy and injure myself! I tried the adjustable ones but can’t get on with them.

WearyAuldWumman · 12/04/2026 20:22

Sorry, @MummyInTheNecropolis - I just move up via trial and error at the gym. I usually just go up one kg at a time, though I can manage a bit more with some exercises. I'm managing a few side raises with 7kg. I can manage biceps curls and single low rows with 7.5 kg.

I'm wary of jumping up too much. The time I tried to move up straight from 6kg to 7.5 kg for side raises, I thought that my pelvic floor was going to give way...
