Hi all, just setting up a second thread - I hope you don’t mind @Jumbojem but the other one was getting a bit close to ending…

Sorry to keep harping on about the weather but it’s still raining up here so instead of running this morning I’m going to get back on my lovely water rowing machine which I’ve neglected totally since starting running back in Jan/Feb. I miss it (and I miss the muscle toning it gave me) so I’m going to get back on this morning for a change.

Might do parkrun tomorrow or a longer run, haven’t yet decided.

Well done on your great times all you racers. I climbed snowdon last week with my gym friends and my legs did not thank me for it last week. I still managed to get out though, couple of 5ks and a 10k on Saturday. I am racing a halloween 👻10k on Sunday, not sure how it will go but just trying to keep up the miles.
Had an email last night about the Yorkshire marathon next year and impulsively signed up, this morning I am thinking what the hell have I done 😂

Well done on Snowden @tinks3110 i was looking at the Yorkshire marathon. Seems like a good PB course. It’s a bit of a trek for me but I’m considering it next year. I’m sure you’ll love the experience.
I’m Also thinking of doing Boston U.K. marathon in the spring as meant to be a very flat course and the timing would work well with other things I’m doing. Again it’s a bit of a trek but would do it as a weekend away. I think I may have the marathon bug now!

well done on your weekend runs @BogRollBOGOF and @OhOneOhTwoOhThree

Can I ask a bit of what I fear might be a stupid question, but I cant seem to get a clear answer online

General advise seems to be to start incorporating strength training 2 x a week into my routine. I dont do any gym work currently just run and attend pilates 1 x a week.

Can I do training from home, if so, what would you recommend? Also any equipment I should look at getting? I do have light dumbells in the back of a cupboard.....somewhere!

Or am I better going to a gym with real equipment? Id rather not, its a 40 mile round trip for me to go to my nearest one, but if I have to I could try and incorporate it into an already pretty jam packed week! (Can you feel the eagerness here)

I think you could probably manage what you need to at home tbh. A 40 mile round trip doesn’t seem worth it.

I try and do one class like legs bums and tums with weights, or pump a week. But don’t manage to get there every week. I do manage the HIIT and core classes most weeks.

you could start with body weight tbh or just the little weights you already have, squats, lunges, heel raises, RDLs etc. Core exercises like planks, leg raises, crunches, Russian twists etc. Maybe see if you can find a YouTube video to follow.

The other thing I have found really helpful is daily yoga. I just follow a 15-20 minute YouTube video about 5 mornings a week and I feel it’s been really beneficial. i am a little bit rubbish at remembering to do weight training but I do stick at the yoga as I like it more 😂

RunningInto · 20/10/2025 15:18

@SFRSmum I started strength doing a 10min Caroline girvan youtube video then moved to a 20min one full body with dumbbells. Really easy to follow as a good all over at home quick session. It’s mainly squats, lunges, press ups, chest press, plank stuff but I’ve seen a gradual improvement. Worth doing to help protect against injuries if you start upping the running mileage.

SFRSmum · 20/10/2025 17:15

Thank you both, ill take a look at Caroline Girvan, Ive seen her name mentioned a few times.
I was going to a weekly yoga class as well but it was the day before my pilates class and I felt it was too much. I might look into restarting it though. Ill also check out YouTube for that too.

Cantbesure · 20/10/2025 18:28

Happy Monday all. I hit a goal I hadn’t expected this weekend. A Groundhog Day at parkrun. An exact same time this Saturday as my last parkrun. I’m not even sure how that’s possible 😂

Well done. Atheist it means yoire consistent!

I had that too. Same time, same position!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 20/10/2025 21:49

@SFRSmum - meant to say earlier, a 25 minute parkrun is an excellent time! I started with bodyweight strength training a while ago (I posted a link somewhere earlier on this thread I think) but gave up after a couple of weeks as I somehow strained my inner thigh/groin area - not sure how I did it but it has been sore for a while so I haven't been doing squats and lunges etc (it wasn't necessarily the strength training that did for me!). I have followed the Yoga with Adriene calendar religiously this year and am much stronger than a year ago - I can feel the difference both on my mat and when running and swimming.

Great consistency @xsquared and @Cantbesure !

@tinks3110 congratulations on climbing Snowdon! I've also had the Yorkshire marathon email Smile.

xsquared · 20/10/2025 21:58

Oh dear, I've just realised how bad the typos are when I'm on my phone instead of on the laptop! That's meant to say "At least you're consistent!"

BogRollBOGOF · 21/10/2025 17:23

Oddly I managed two "match of the days" when a local parkrun and I both managed run 47 & 49 at the same time. The local parkruns and I are now totally out of sync!

RunningInto · 21/10/2025 18:03

Nice 5.5k early before work but crap setting off in dark gloom at least next week will be bit earlier again before it gets dark again in the mornings.

xsquared · 22/10/2025 23:41

Double run day for me today.

Did my intervals this morning.

This evening I was on run leading duty. Clocked 27km today in total.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 23/10/2025 13:05

Well done @xsquared !

I had a lovely sunny 6 miles up and down run yesterday. Glad I got it in before the storm arrived as it's very windy outside and wouldn't be much fun doing it today.

SFRSmum · 23/10/2025 13:19

Im planning about 8.5 miles for tonight after work. I need to focus on going slow for my long runs so thats my main aim!

Been out to buy all sorts of high vis bits and bobs so plan on being lit up like a Christmas tree 🤣

Well done on the runs so far this week! Its not as easy getting out when its dark early but definitely worth it. Ive got a treadmill i can use in an absolute emergency but tbh I hate bloody thing

RunningInto · 23/10/2025 14:18

Any recommendations for good high vis kit? I try to run during daylight as as I work from I can nip out at lunchtime but even the mornings are so dark now. Plus my motivation to run drops as the day goes on. I Did see a lady run past me in a body warmer type bright yellow over top. I’ve had stuff in the past but it’s obviously been a unisex cut which normally means fits a man well but not a short big boobs woman! Just bought knee high compression socks & fingerless gloves to replace worn out bits.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 23/10/2025 19:47

well done on your runs yesterday @xsquared and @OhOneOhTwoOhThree

hope your run goes well tonight @SFRSmum

@RunningInto I have brought a long sleeved proviz top which has super reflective arms. I haven’t worn it yet though as it’s not been quite cold enough. I did also buy a very cheap couple of short sleeve fluorescent tops from SHEIN which have been good so far. I brought a body light which has a white light at the front and a red at the back from eBay for like £8 and I’ve been very pleased with that so far.

7.5 mile club run for me on Tuesday this week and then a 4 mile muddy hilly trail with my dog on my lunch break today. I was going to go to the gym this evening but I’ve sacked it off to eat pizza in front of the telly! 😂

RunningInto · 23/10/2025 20:13

Thanks @Whataninterestinglookingpotato gives me some ideas on kit.

I just had very impromptu trail run as DH gave me a lift so he walked the dog one way whilst I did a trail loop but it was getting dark gosh at 6pm so felt a bit vulnerable on my own. Nice to get it done though in dry break after wet n windy day.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 24/10/2025 21:16

I got 5 sunny miles in today, as I'm time keeping at parkrun tomorrow.

Have a good weekend running all!

Jumbojem · 24/10/2025 21:47

I had planned a longer run today but it was heavy rain showers so I decided to do the 3 min easy, 1 min hard intervals suggested by Garmin. Ran down the gravel cycle path which was very puddly, and got splashed by cars on the road section. First wet run in a long while, but probably not the last going into winter.
OH reminded me clocks change this weekend which really limits my evening run options. I may start lunch runs on my office days so I don't get bored of the same few street lit roads where I live.
So, longer run now planned for tomorrow hoping weather better!

RunningInto · 25/10/2025 18:30

Smashed out my fastest ever parkrun this morning just amazing in my 50s what losing 40lbs and some strength training can do. Super pleased with that. And it stayed dry despite very iffy forecast

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 25/10/2025 19:58

Great work @RunningInto Congratulations!

@Jumbojem hope it stayed dry for you today.

I enjoyed volunteering this morning, we had plenty of sunshine, a group of 5K your way walkers and lots of happy faces.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 26/10/2025 12:03

Well done @RunningInto great park run!!

I hope you managed to stay dry yesterday @Jumbojem

well done on volunteering at park run @OhOneOhTwoOhThree

track intervals session for me on Friday night and then social 10 mile long run this morning with the club. Didn’t go with my usual group as our group leader is away but nice to join the main social group for a change. The weather was lovely and we all went for coffee and cake after. Not a bad start to Sunday.

tinks3110 · 26/10/2025 13:30

Afternoon all, well I took myself off to the canal today for my Hubble bubble 10k race. Wasn’t sure how it would do as I went on my own and usually have run club support. Turns out I smashed it! 52.59, over 2 mins off my pb! And the medal is 😍
next race is 8.8 miles on 23 November, that will be a steady one as got the abbey dash 10k the week after and secretly hoping for another pb!
🤣
happy running all xx

Stripeymouse · 26/10/2025 13:30

Just catching up and trying to get inspired by all the effort on here.

I’ve had a dip this week. After getting a 5km pb that I’ve been working on all summer/autumn I’ve lost my mojo.

The drop in temperature is really putting me off. I hate setting off feeling cold, but if I wear a jumper I hate being hot after 15mins. The floor is getting wet, muddy and slippery with leaves which is making me nervous of another fall.

What is everyone wearing to run in now it’s colder? I’ve been spoilt this year with the dry paths and consistently warmer temperatures. I don’t know what I’m doing now!
