Hi all, just setting up a second thread - I hope you don’t mind @Jumbojem but the other one was getting a bit close to ending…

Sorry to keep harping on about the weather but it’s still raining up here so instead of running this morning I’m going to get back on my lovely water rowing machine which I’ve neglected totally since starting running back in Jan/Feb. I miss it (and I miss the muscle toning it gave me) so I’m going to get back on this morning for a change.

Might do parkrun tomorrow or a longer run, haven’t yet decided.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I finished my 10k this morning in 55.15 😳 (garmin time still waiting on official time)! I ran with an ex army member of our running group and he pushed me so hard 😂 but I am so happy!

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 03/08/2025 14:34

Amazing @tinks3110 well done!! Great time!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 03/08/2025 16:46

@tinks3110 you are a superstar! Massive well done!

SoapCollector · 03/08/2025 17:08

Big well done @tinks3110 that's an amazing achievement 😁

Cantbesure · 03/08/2025 17:46

New to the thread, so catching up. Amazing @tinks3110 you must be over the moon with that speedy time. Well done.

Im back into running after another couch to 5k group last year. I’ve joined a local running group and trying to start parkrun as a regular habit. I’m buzzing with getting a PB at parkrun this week. I beat my time from 7 years ago which was on a much flatter and faster course and amazed myself at getting back to sub 29 at 52. Got my first 10K event next week. Nervous and excited!

tinks3110 · 03/08/2025 17:56

Aw thanks everybody I am loving this thread
@Cantbesure
good luck for your 10k!
I’ve never run a sub 1 hour 10k even when
i was 10+ years younger and didn’t have dodgy knees so im very happy

xsquared · 03/08/2025 18:18

Well done @tinks3110. That's a fantastic achievement.

Stripeymouse · 03/08/2025 18:52

Amazing work @tinks3110 and @Cantbesure fantastic achievements.

I’m tempted to do a gentle 5km this evening just because I want to get out. Strength training would be more sensible though.

tinks3110 · 03/08/2025 19:36

53.17 official time 😳

Bonus!

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 03/08/2025 19:56

Welcome @Cantbesure hood luck for your 10k next week. I also have another 10k event next week and then I shall be ruining my marathon training by going to a festival 😂.

@tinks3110 thats an amazing time!! Well done!

Cantbesure · 03/08/2025 21:45

@tinks3110 oh my god. That’s elite!! Amazing 👏

@Stripeymouse your parkrun sounds like mine. There’s a real bottle neck at the start.

Stripeymouse · 03/08/2025 21:49

Inspired by this thread I did 5.5km this evening and some strength training. I’m expecting some aches tomorrow. It was a lovely evening to be out running.

Do any park runs have people with pacing flags? I’d love to find someone who is slightly faster than me and runs reasonably consistently so I can try and keep up with them.

Cantbesure · 03/08/2025 21:53

@Stripeymouse I’ve been at a parkrun with pacers, but it was a one off provided by a running club. That was my original PB now I think about it.

well done on a run and strength training. And after parkrun yesterday too! I wouldn’t normally run two days in a row but I needed to get my long run in ahead of my 10K.

You will get to know who is usually in front or behind you the more you attend.

At one of our parkruns, we have a pacers' week on the first Saturday of each month, so they may have the same at yours. If not just pay attention who is usually finishing around the same time as you.

Although don't make it too obvious that you're using them as a pacer, if you're anything like the runner who keeps speeding up to catch up with me and run in front of me so that I can't pass them!

Stripeymouse · 03/08/2025 22:07

@xsquared that’s annoying, are they doing it every week?

I don’t think they do it at mine, it’s never been mentioned on the FB group.

@Cantbesure C25K was adamant about having a rest day after every run. I’ve started a Garmin training program and that has me running Tue, Wed, Sat and Sun. No idea why it’s picked consecutive days.

Cantbesure · 03/08/2025 22:10

I’ve never run 4x in a week @Stripeymouse I do 2 or 3 runs. I’m old and not sure my bones can take more than that!

xsquared · 03/08/2025 23:04

@Stripeymouse He didn't this week as I overtook him in the last km and finished 10 places ahead of him for a change!🤣 Yes, he seems to do it quite a lot and thinks we're in a friendly competition with one another. He once even asked to look at my position barcode as we finished close together.

It's a shame they don't do pacers at your parkrun.

Some fantastic times! Well done to your daughter @Whataninterestinglookingpotato 34mins for her first one is amazing.

I can’t find the right starting spot either. I was too far back today. Time before I was too fast on the off and it was a hard run.
There are lots of people who start really fast then walk after about 700m. Unfortunately that’s where the path narrows. I know it’s not in the spirit of Park Run, but I find it annoying 😂

I have been known to grumble privately about nordic walkers starting mid-pack and causing bunching. I've nothing against walking, I've done it many times, just be realistic about where to place yourself when you plan to be at walking pace.

When I Jeff, I start further back and work my way forwards as the crowd thins or run much of the first km to keep up until it thins.

To be fair the briefing says "watch out for other park users"

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 04/08/2025 07:06

Our local parkrun doesn’t have pacers on the whole.

I find kids are the biggest cause of hold ups at our local one. They set off really fast along the wider first section but run out of steam as the route goes up hill and narrows out causing blockages. The younger ones often don’t have the self awareness to move to the side.

There was quite a firm message sent out this week after the run reminding parents that they have to keep their under 11s within arms reach of them as they’ve been causing issues. It’s nice that it’s a family event but parents need to look after their children.

having a bit of friendly competition does help you pick up the pace. I’ve got faster times since I’ve been running with an older guy from the same club as me. He was slightly faster than me, at 5k distance, but has been encouraging me to try and beat him and the last couple of weeks I have.

LovesToWalk · 04/08/2025 10:20

Hi, can I join in please? I love running but fell out of it after an injury. Now I'm running the London Marathon next year I need to get my mojo back and not be as sporadic as I have been 😂

Well done @tinks3110 and @Cantbesure for your results - they're excellent! I'm strength training today, but might nip out for a quick tempo run after if I can fit it in!

I'm a bit afraid of park run.

SoapCollector · 04/08/2025 11:54

tinks3110 · 03/08/2025 19:36

53.17 official time 😳

Tinks 😲 even better, that's a fantastic time!

Welcome @Cantbesure I too had a break of around 7 years from running. Well done on your parkrun. I'm not back at sub 30 parkrun yet though that's my aim! Good luck for your 10k!

Welcome @LovesToWalk it's a lovely thread. London marathon sounds exciting! Have you run a marathon before or will it be your first one?

Cantbesure · 04/08/2025 11:56

Welcome to fellow newbie @LovesToWalk. London marathon is seriously impressive. Well done on getting a place. You can’t be scared of parkrun if you can enter LM!

LovesToWalk · 04/08/2025 15:01

Thanks for the welcome guys!

@SoapCollector I've run one before - and hated it! 😂But I'm going for a different approach this time, I'm going to do it to remind myself how much I love running, not to worry about times and what people think of me!

@Cantbesure that is actually such a good way to look at it! I genuinely feel utterly intimidated by park run, maybe less people? But I might try and go in a few weeks and see how I get on!
