David Lloyd or Egypt??

Hi everyone
I’ve been a member of David Lloyd for the last 6 months really enjoy it, spa is lovely I enjoy the swimming pools the classes the gym all the facilities I take the kids every now and then on guest pass there at full time school. gets me out of the home and keeps me fit however if I continue with the membership it means we can’t afford the 10 day trip to Egypt next year so 10 days in the sun? Or lifestyle daily at the gym what’s your thoughts?

Have you looked at Nuffield memberships if you have one near you. Much cheaper for comparable facilities. Who knows maybe you can have both a nice gym and a nice holiday!

FrenchandSaunders · 24/10/2024 08:29

I ageee with pp. David Lloyd is so expensive and there are other gyms much cheaper.

I switched to Nuffield, hated it and was back to dl within the year.

personally if you are using and benefiting from the membership I’d stick with dl and hopefully try and plan Egypt for the following year. You can’t usually cancel within the year anyway and it’s 3 months notice period.

It doesn't really sound like you can afford David Lloyd on your income.

Well she can, but like most luxuries, it's a case of choosing which luxury she'd prefer. A gym membership is hardly an essential.

Personally, I'd go to Egypt and take up running/ move gyms

FeelinTwentySixPointTwo · 24/10/2024 08:50

I'd go to Egypt but then do running and yoga in my spare time, while also joining a cheaper gym.

But then I never really liked DL. Too posey for my tastes. I preferred the Virgin gym I switched to after that, but cancelled that when the prices got silly. I'm now at a gym that's less than £30 a month and I go more often than I ever did to DL or Virgin, mainly because the location is more convenient but also because it's cleaner and quieter (I can actually get in a squat rack without queing, and the classes aren't booked up the second they're released!)
The down side is that the gym I'm at now hasn't got kids' activities, but my kids are happier doing climbing/biking/running etc anyway.

Rnh · 24/10/2024 09:34

Well that’s the thing I can afford one or the other.

I would not personally choose Egypt over a DL membership. The place looks like a dive and I've heard almost exclusively negative stories about people being harassed, followed, etc. you seen to basically need to hire a "guide" to shield you from the hawkers etc.

I want my holidays to be relaxing, not an exercise in constant vigilance.

It would be a tougher choice if it was idk the Bahamas or something.

So if you can’t do both you can’t afford either? Odd take.

Is it just you and the kids or OH too? They might get a say but my initial thoughts are stick with the gym if you’re using it. Holidays are mostly lovely but are over so quickly and can be disappointing and stressful.

Clearinguptheclutter · 24/10/2024 09:40

Egypt really isn’t worth getting very excited over sadly. It’s a bit of a dive.

I’d choose a nice gym membership but hopefully it’s possible to choose a slightly cheaper gym (DL is horrendous) and have a holiday?

Rnh · 24/10/2024 09:52

I’ve been to Egypt a couple of times went to the Hilton in hurghada couple of years ago beautiful resort the snorkelling was amazing food wasn’t incredible but there was always things to eat that I quite enjoyed the restaurants within the hotel was nice a nice Mongolian dish my son loved. but we stayed in the resort as our children were younger and I’m not one for exploring as I prefer to relax and be by the pool and enjoy the sun. the people were nice on the resort friendly but off the resort I can imagine it being not as nice.

Egypt is getting increasingly dangerous on the Sinai peninsula (where all the tourist resorts are).

I’ve travelled around Egypt fairly extensively and I wouldn’t go there now. The security at the resorts now is insane.

I am also a David LLoyd member and would 100% pick the enjoyment of week in week out classes, socialising, spa, swim, I work from there too… my kids are members and use the clubs while DH is away so I can still go to the gym.

I feel DL has more of a positive impact on your life 52 weeks of the year vs 2 weeks of a holiday.

Rnh · 24/10/2024 10:58

This is what I was thinking it’s also good for mental well being and holiday is just 10 days out of the year it really helps that the dl gym is on my door step 2 minute walk but also feel bad that kids will miss out on holiday but maybe I could take them on a holiday over here

When people do the shocked face at the price I pay for DL membership I explain I sacrifice big holidays for the membership. I like having an outdoor pool option, classes, weights, decent showers and all the added extras I can access year round. Plus Im determined to get maximum value so that in itself makes me go regularly!

FortunataTagnips · 24/10/2024 11:02

I’d go DL. As you say, it’s a year-round benefit, rather than 10 days.

MrSeptember · 24/10/2024 11:04

While I am someone who thinks DL is very expensive, it's obvious you're really using it and getting a lot of enjoyment out of it. In which case, I would NOT cancel it. Rather look at a cheaper holiday or finding something else to cut.

FortunataTagnips · 25/10/2024 14:35

Fark me. Inspired by this thread, I checked how much a 3-month membership is at my local DL these days. It’s over £300 a month!

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 25/10/2024 15:14

I’d stick with David Lloyd tbh. Sitting outside at their pool in the summer is like a holiday anyway, plus spa and all the facilities every day for a year v 10 days you’ll have forgotten about within a week. Egypt isn’t all that, especially if you’ve been before. The snorkelling was amazing but I could take or leave the rest tbh!

Assuming that's just you, that must be a Tier 1 club? It's crazy though, isn't it!?

unsync · 25/10/2024 16:15

Stay with DL. I've tried lots of gyms over the years. None ever stuck for me. I love DL. The class mix works well for me, the staff are lovely and friendly, outdoor pool year round and the spa. If you do enough classes, it's really good value. I wouldn't sacrifice that for ten days in the sun in Egypt. If you are happy, that has a bug impact on your kids. Don't underestimate that.

Yup, just me. I think it is a Tier 1 club - in London, with shiny new-ish spa. But completely mad. If you sign up for 12 months it’s £270-ish pcm.

Rnh · 25/10/2024 16:56

I know it’s pricey but you’re paying for a lifestyle all year round and I agree that the spa and pool is lovely in the summer! I absolutely love it!

I find this, as it’s so expensive I make sure I go a lot! Sometimes it’s as much as 6/7 times a week to get my money’s worth. I’ve done 2 classes in a day before as well.

Northoftheterritory · 25/10/2024 17:03

Stick with the gym if I were you. I agree Nuffield lovely but no outdoor pool.

Wouldn't go to Egypt now if you paid me and I've been twice but a long time ago.
