C25K to Christmas

Just wondering if anyone else is starting the C25K and would like a motivation thread?

I've done it successfully once before (during covid then stopped) and have a couple of failed attempts, but I'm the sort of person who does well with deadlines so would like to try to complete it before Christmas.

I'm NOT a natural runner - or a natural at anything sporty - so fully prepared to hate every minute of it and would love a motivation buddy or two!

Hi, yes, me and glad to find a buddy.

Starting tomorrow after a year + away from running bar a brief return when I completely overdid it & got injured. Starting tomorrow - how about you?

Borris · 13/10/2024 18:52

Yes please. In a former life I did a lot of running but now I’m fat and lazy. I was thinking I’d like to get back into it. First run tomorrow?

averitablevampire · 13/10/2024 18:55

Why not, Might spur me on, I'm so lethargic at the moment it might help!

UniverseRewardsTheBrave · 13/10/2024 19:58

Oh great, there's a little group of us!

I did my first run on Saturday (week 1 day 1) and it was fine, but I was sore in the morning - makes me feel old!

I think my biggest barrier is going to be when to actually do my runs. I get VERY flushed afterwards and it takes a long time for my face to return to a normal colour so running before work is slightly problematic. But also, I know I'm going to be more likely to be 'too tired' after work!

First run tomorrow just downloaded to app again. I'm going morning and then home for some stretches before work. I'm definitely less motivated in the evening but also have my yoga class on a Monday.

I've also just dug out my faithful post run stretch guide - 5 stretch's that covers the major running muscles and also kept me injury free when properly followed so happy to share if you haven't got a T&T routine.

Borris · 13/10/2024 22:30

Yes please to the stretches guide

lechatnoir · 13/10/2024 22:54

This link has the 5 I do great if you're short on time but want to cover the big muscles:

Or if you've got a bit more time or feeling tight, I'd go to the 10 shown

Oh lordy it was a wet one but I did it 😁

Just realised I'm doing the NHS programme not the official app so mine is actually 9 weeks but day 1 run 1 done with 30 second runs and 90 sec walks so felt OK. Laying out my clothes and telling DH to make me go definitely helped as he could see me wavering and gave me some encouragement to get it over with!
I'm going to have to go again tomorrow as I'm working long days rest of the week so just hoping it's not quite so wet as I literally got soaked by passing cars t least 3 times which isn't fun.

Borris · 14/10/2024 19:28

Just back from my first one. The dog was certainly pleased to get out again. My route is slightly downhill to begin with so I definitely found the second half back uphill harder. Next run planned for Wednesday

Borris · 15/10/2024 17:36

Did you manage run 2 @lechatnoir ?

lechatnoir · 15/10/2024 21:42

Believe it or not I did Grin

How do you find dog + running? My dog is a bit small for full on 30+ mins runs but I reckon whilst it's run /walk I might try taking him as it's a right pain going out for a run then back home to take the dog out an hour later.

Couple of days off now so going to try and get some yoga in on at least one of those days plus going swimming with a friend tomorrow night - feel like I might sink at the moment but all good cross-training as I'm determined to keep injuries at bay this time.

Borris · 15/10/2024 21:53

Well done! I'm aiming for run 2 tomorrow!

The dog would rather be off lead, but my after work rounds are just around the roads so she is on the lead and I think does miss out on the sniffs. But this is an extra for her as she will have had a before work off lead walk anyway.

My weekend run will be ideal as she can be off lead and can stop and catch up as much as she wants.

Borris · 17/10/2024 22:54

Run 2 done today ✅

lechatnoir · 28/10/2024 14:30

How's everyone doing here? Did you manage to keep going? Amazingly I have stuck to the 3 runs a week and now feel like I'm getting back into my old routine where on run days I just get up & go rather than faff/procrastinate and then not bother as I have been the past year! I've actually skipped forward a bit as I found the first few weeks a bit slow (ex-runner so I guess there's muscle memory somewhere!) so I've just ticked off week 4 day 1 today.

Be good to hear from any of you who still going....?

Borris · 31/10/2024 15:22

I've finished week 2 but had a 5 day half term break which means I've not started week 3 yet. Planning to get back out tomorrow. Thanks for the update. Now I've written it down then it's more likely to happen!

scoopoftheday · 03/11/2024 14:11

Glad to have found this thread!

I'm about to start week 5 tomorrow.

I'm not a natural runner and have found it hard enough so far.

My knees hurt and my hips hurt 😁

And last week it was running for 3 mins then running for 5 (twice, with walking between)

Day 1 week 5 is three 5 min runs..and looking ahead it seems to jump to 8 mins then run 3 is run for 20 mins... so more than doubles from 8 mins?

Seems hard.

kirinm · 03/11/2024 15:49

I'll join. I've actually done c25k this year but basically stopped running towards the summer so I ran run 1 of w2 today. It was okay but much harder than I was expecting.

lechatnoir · 03/11/2024 15:59

@scoopoftheday I'm due to start wk5 tomorrow and also looked at the runs this week and thought it seemed a big jump! I think day 3 is the biggie so I might repeat day 1&2 a few times before making the leap.

Yes, seems a big jump.

I run with my friend so will see what she thinks too but repeating the runs seem like a good idea!

lechatnoir · 03/11/2024 18:39

Waves and welcome @kirinm and hope to see you back injury free @Borris

lechatnoir · 04/11/2024 11:04

@scoopoftheday day 1 wasn't as bad as I thought and the 3 x 5 min runs went surprisingly quickly & didn't feel too much of a step up. How did yours go?

Hope you managed to get another run in @kirinm - I'm so pleased I started up again and now I'm a month in, definitely back in that old routine where Monday, Wednesday & Friday morning I run without even thinking about it. Running clothes left out the night before, wake up, dress & clean teeth then out of the door in less than 10 minutes.

kirinm · 04/11/2024 11:17

Thanks for the welcome @lechatnoir

I'm in the office today so no run but I'll aim to run tomorrow.

Well done for getting up and out!

I'm just back in from mine and I have to agree.

The first one was sort of getting used to moving again and finding my pace, second one I was in my stride, third one I could feel my calf muscles burning and then when we were meant to be doing the 5 minute cool down walk I some banging tunes come on, went hyper and continued running 🙈🙈

It's great you're back in routine again!

I go to the gym a few mornings a week, I WFH so I try to fit the run in three lunchtimes a week.

Borris · 04/11/2024 21:46

I had a week off for half term trip but have got out for week 3 run 1 today. Will go again on Wednesday when I have a day off so no excuses not to to go then!

kirinm · 05/11/2024 08:26

I've got a really irritating start of a cold type feeling and am quite wheezy (asthmatic) but I've been like this for a few days so don't think it's going to develop into anything worse. It's just annoying that I'm struggling with my breathing. I'll be trying to run today - last run of week 2.
