Would you think it was odd if someone wore a burkini at an indoor pool?

I'm extremely self conscious about my body and I'm very overweight. Once upon a time I used to run but my knees are awful right now and the best thing I can think of is water exercises.

I would quite happily wear a burkini to my local pool. I haven't been to a swimming pool in about 9 years. Would it be really odd for someone to wear a burkini? Would it make you stare? Have you ever seen anyone wear a burkini at an indoor pool?

I’ve only ever seen one person wear one and that was for religious reasons.
When I go swimming there’s all shapes and sizes but no one cares everyone is just doing their own thing. I understand you’re self conscious but I think a burkini would draw more attention to yourself as not many people wear them (or not where I am anyway).

Would find it very mildly weird / unusual. Would not care or stare.

Our local pool has recently changed their rules and now allow you to wear leggings etc.
I'd speak to the staff there and ask what is allowed.

Several ladies wore them at the aquacise sessions I used to go to. All muslim but so what if it enables you to feel confident enough to swim? I wore a sports bra under my non cup sized costume to limit the bounce, another coiple used to wear swim/board shorts over their costumes, no one was bothered.
What about something like this? It is from a company called modora

I wouldn't think a thing about it.

The pool I sometimes go to has a women only slot several times a week and lots of the women wear them.

Honestly, I might give you a second glance, but then think no more of it and carry on with my day.

I bought a nice swimsuit that is basically like a shorts with a sewn on baggiesh top with sleeves in the middle east. I am sure you can get something similar here too. I wear it all the time here when I swim with my kids as I am invariably spending most of the time out of the water at the bottom of a flume waiting for them and it feels more comfortable than in a skimpy suit. Noone bats an eyelid.

This kind of thing

Lots of women wear them at my sports Centre. Some I just assume are women that converted to Islam but now thinking about it maybe they didn't and just feel more comfortable wearing that.

calishire · 28/01/2025 20:51

Lots of burkinis at the pools near me so I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

tartyflette · 01/05/2025 14:43

Ikve seen one once, a few years ago. My only thought was it didn't look very easy to swim in, heavy and a bit constricting.
Perhaps they're better these days.
I've also seen quite a few women swimming in t-shirts and long shorts (like cycling shorts) . Might that work for you?

happygertie · 03/05/2025 19:29

At my local pools lots of women wear swim dresses and there are others that wear full bodysuits and as far as I know no one bats and eyelid, I certainly don’t.
