Would you think it was odd if someone wore a burkini at an indoor pool?

I'm extremely self conscious about my body and I'm very overweight. Once upon a time I used to run but my knees are awful right now and the best thing I can think of is water exercises.

I would quite happily wear a burkini to my local pool. I haven't been to a swimming pool in about 9 years. Would it be really odd for someone to wear a burkini? Would it make you stare? Have you ever seen anyone wear a burkini at an indoor pool?

@AquaFurball ’Hi I’m fat and I’m wearing a swimsuit’? Like that?
What are you on?

GOODCAT · 10/07/2024 08:36

I would notice just because I haven't seen one worn before, but no one cares what anyone wears. There are all sizes, ages and nationalities. Everyone is there to enjoy a swim and focussed on their own thing.

Please let the lifeguards know beforehand, and try to attend a disabled session if possible. The additional clothing does create an additional risk to your safety in the pool.

Wearing regular clothes creates a risk. Wearing purpose designed swim suits that are just long in the arm and leg don't! No need to announce yourself op

Wear whatever makes you feel comfy. We have a couple of ladies in our aqua class who wear one and nobody bats an eyelid. People come in all shapes and sizes - nobody judges or cares really - too busy trying to keep up with the exercise! 🧜‍♀️

unsync · 10/07/2024 08:44

Quite normal. I've also seen people in cycle shorts. You can also get rash vests and leggings for swimming. Most council pools will also have women only swimming sessions.

Sorry what now?

the loose scarf head coverings could pose a safety risk as could loose tops which occasionally float up around your face and neck. swimming with clothing on is also much harder and tiresome.

Loose scarf head coverings? Am I missing something?

I used to swim at the Aquatics Centre pools in East London (Olympics venue) and it was a common sight.

I would not find it odd in the slightest and would not even notice!

13Bastards · 10/07/2024 09:00

Very common at the ladies only session I go to- I feel rather underdressed in my bikini! I don't think twice, would just assume perhaps you were Muslim, or another religion wanting to be modest and go about my swim.

Katiesaidthat · 10/07/2024 09:02

Well, bearing in mind that one lady at my pool wears a full mermaid tail and drags herself out of the pool across the floor and into the spa pool 4 metres away, no I don´t think I would notice, and if I did I would think you were on the normal side nowadays.

Cutecattoes · 10/07/2024 09:03

Seen primark sell a version but haven't seen anyone wearing one.
I would probably look because I haven't seen one being worn but that would be the extent of it

Octavia64 · 10/07/2024 09:06

Burkinis don't have loose head coverings.

They have a swim cap (like the ones given out in swim competitions) in a swimsuit material.

It isn't loose!

Edingril · 10/07/2024 09:07

I would not care on looks but chlorine affects some material

Domoda · 10/07/2024 09:08

I might briefly notice but I would think it's good that they've found an outfit that has enabled them to swim, I wouldn't think anything else.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/07/2024 09:09

Commonplace where I live (east London)

Domoda · 10/07/2024 09:09

Some people on this thread clearly don't know what a burkini is 😂. It's not a burkha, please google it 😂

BogRollBOGOF · 10/07/2024 09:10

One of the pools near me serves a diverse community and has a diverse range of swimwear.
Some other pools are a bit more mainstream.

I wear all sorts depending on what I'm doing. If it's bobbing around with the DCs, I'm more likely to cover up for warmth with rash vests or shortie wetsuit. I've worn cycling shorts before to protect my sore, scabby thigh chaffe after my legs shredded themselves while running.

Saschka · 10/07/2024 09:11

The very obese women in our local pool wear leggings and t shirts (thin workout tshirts that don’t weigh you down, or rash vests). There are usually a couple of very big ladies dressed like that in the toddler pool with their kids during family swim time, it’s pretty normal at least round here.

I’d think absolutely nothing about a burkini.

Drivingbuttercup · 10/07/2024 09:17

Go for it OP, my only advice is don't buy a cheap one, it wo t last long. Addidas and nike have a good range

Do you think a burkini might be made out of... swimsuit material?

This thread is blowing my mind, it's astounding and quite depressing.

namechangiosa · 10/07/2024 09:23

Some of the Muslim women wear burkinis where I am. I am obese and have knee problems, I didn't want to wear a burkini because I thought the long sleeves might be a problem getting on and off. I didn't want to get a tankini because I didn't like the thought of a gap in the middle.

I bought an ordinary swimsuit from the same place I buy my bras because I was worried in case my boobs popped out and frightened everyone. Then I bought a pair of swim shorts (from Yours) to put over the top as I didn't fancy walking round in what basically looks like my knickers. Then I bought a swim tee off Amazon and put that on over everything. This means I am covered from neck to knee (I am very short) and if anything comes adrift in the middle, I am covered there too.

Do I look like a stuffed sausage? Probably. Do I care? No. Has anyone ever commented? No - well one woman told me it was great I was wearing something I felt comfortable in, which I took as a compliment.

I do try to go at quiet times though.

Once you have been for the first time, it's easy - even better if you can go with a friend (I couldn't unfortunately) - as long as that friend doesn't look like a supermodel! 😁

GabrielOakRose · 10/07/2024 09:23

I remember Nigella doing this on the beach a few years ago as she didn't want tabloids taking photos of her body. Quite a good idea.

Namechangedforspooky · 10/07/2024 09:26

I lane swim a lot and honestly, no one notices what anyone else looks like, whether they’re very covered up or unshaven legs etc.
No one will bat an eyelid (most of us are in there without our glasses anyway!)

35965a · 10/07/2024 09:32

What do some people here think a burkini is? Talking about headscarves and stuff? Here’s a photo. The material is very light swimsuit material and they certainly don’t drag in the water. There are tighter fitting styles too which are still modest.

Would you think it was odd if someone wore a burkini at an indoor pool?
