Concerned about my DD and her 10k run

So she's doing this run, 10k and I'm really concerned she's not prepared enough, she can easily run 5k and has recently done 8.5 k but not 10 yet so it'll be her first run 10 k this weekend.
I'm so scared she'll put her body under a lot of stress, stress she's only young but I'm really worried.
There's always someone collapsing or worse at a marathon, even though I know this isn't that far.

Genuinely, she will be absolutely fine. Unless she's 6 or something!

FannyFifer · 20/06/2024 19:19

If she can easily run 5k, had done 8.5k then I really fail to understand your concern.

xyz111 · 20/06/2024 19:19

If she can do 8.5k then she can do 10k. And if she struggles, she can walk the last bit. You seem very overly concerned. How old is she?

Hatty65 · 20/06/2024 19:19

She might or might not finish it, but it shouldn't kill her! 10k is only just over 6 miles. Really quite young children can walk that far!

Monkeybutt1 · 20/06/2024 19:20

If she's done 8.5 k 10k isn't much more of a stretch, she's done the right thing building up. You can't compare 10k to a marathon, that's another 20 miles, which is completely different

bluecomputerscreen · 20/06/2024 19:21

she will be fine Smile

if she's regularly running 5k she'll be grand with 10.

all the best for her.
I hope you will cheer her on

MartyFunkhouser · 20/06/2024 19:21

I can run 10k and I’m not very fit! If she can do 8.5, she’ll do it easily.

BotterMon · 20/06/2024 19:21

She'll be fine! If she's done 8.5k she is more than prepared. If she's tired she can just walk fgs.

Summerslimm · 20/06/2024 19:21

She’ll be fine, probably take an hour and have a drink afterwards
my dd does 4hr gym sessions four times a week and they have 8yr olds in their squad. If she’s run 8.5k she’ll be fine. You could train to join her too I hope she enjoys it.

persisted · 20/06/2024 19:23

Unless she gets lost and accidentally does another 20 miles she'll be fine.

It's only 1.5k more than she's already done, that's less than a mile. Often on run training programmes the progession is more than that from one week to the next.

Seaitoverthere · 20/06/2024 19:25

She’ll be absolutely fine. I took up running at 46 for a couple of years and did a couple of 10ks whilst out and intending to do my usual 5k, I was fine.

museumum · 20/06/2024 19:27

Stepping up from 8.5k to 10K will be absolutely fine (assuming she is not a very young child).
A marathon is over 42k!!

Grassisntalwaysgreener54 · 20/06/2024 19:27

Thanks all, I'm just really anxious thanks for reassuring me. I just don't think she's prepared enough and I'm scared she'll have heart failure or something I know it's irrational.....
Yes I'll be there cheering her on!

You don’t need to run the full distance in preparation for anything and this is a bit crazy. I have ms and ran an actual marathon last year and I’m still here to tell the tale! Kisy make sure she’s hydrated and she’ll be fine!

She's 26, it's just me and her I have no other family.

AstonMartha · 20/06/2024 19:30

How old is she? Old enough to know that she can stop/walk for a bit? Or is she not very intelligent or able to read her own body?

Swiftea · 20/06/2024 19:30

10k is a two hour walk. If she can run 5k easily, it’s not that big a stretch.

DreadPirateRobots · 20/06/2024 19:31

What?! She's young. It's only 10k. She's nearly run that already.

If this is typical of your thinking, I think you probably need to seek some support for anxiety.

Sounds like she prepared perfectly

Drttc · 20/06/2024 19:32

As a runner I agree - if she can run 8.5k she’ll be fine with 10k!

LemonCitron · 20/06/2024 19:32

She'll be absolutely fine OP.

Savoydone · 20/06/2024 19:33

I run. She’ll be fine.

EllaPaella · 20/06/2024 19:33

If she can run 5k she can run 10. The fitness is there, just needs to pace herself. She'll be fine.

DCINightingale · 20/06/2024 19:33

She'll be fine. For my first 10km rave the furthest I had done before hand was 8km. If she is doing a race then the adrenaline and excitement of that environment will easily help her cover the extra 1.5km and she will be totally fine!

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 20/06/2024 19:35

I just don't think she's prepared enough and I'm scared she'll have heart failure or something

if you genuinely think that, and you’re not just over-egging it, then I would be considering going to talk to someone because that level of anxiety about a fairly mundane event, especially one that she has prepared for, it not rational.
