Concerned about my DD and her 10k run

So she's doing this run, 10k and I'm really concerned she's not prepared enough, she can easily run 5k and has recently done 8.5 k but not 10 yet so it'll be her first run 10 k this weekend.
I'm so scared she'll put her body under a lot of stress, stress she's only young but I'm really worried.
There's always someone collapsing or worse at a marathon, even though I know this isn't that far.

Most people could run (or at least run/walk) 10k, she'll be absolutely fine Smile

SingingSands · 20/06/2024 19:51

26 - Ah she will be grand!

Do you do any exercise with her? (Are you physically able to?) It might help with your anxiety. The couch to 5k app is excellent.

Baddaybigcloud · 20/06/2024 19:52

She’s 26!! It’s only 10k - she’ll be fine! I run 10k or more every single week and it hasn’t killed me it’s made me fit!

Combattingthemoaners · 20/06/2024 19:52

If she can run 8.5km she will be able to run 10km in race conditions.

fluffyguineapig · 20/06/2024 19:52

She'll be absolutely fine! Most people don't run the whole distance before a run, and an extra 1.5km is not going to be a problem - and if it is she can just walk a bit! 10km is awesome but it isn't a dangerous distance at all. She will be fine!

Onelifeonly · 20/06/2024 19:54

I thought the rule was you only need to train up to two thirds the distance. I used to run 10Ks at one time and never ran that far except during the actual race. Being in a race is a lot mote motivating than just running alone- I simply couldn't be bothered!

OhHelloMiss · 20/06/2024 19:55

26!!! I thought you were going to say 11/12 age group!

MakingPlans2025 · 20/06/2024 19:56

How old is she?

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 20/06/2024 19:57

I'm nearly 50 and regularly run 5k despite being a bit overweight and not doing much other exercise. I reckon I could turn up and do 10k without any preparation and although I'd find it tough I wouldn't expect it to actually do me any harm. Most people of average fitness could walk a 10k with no preparation and she sounds like she's done more that enough to get ready to run it. A marathon is a massively different distance

MakingPlans2025 · 20/06/2024 19:58

Oh I've just read the whole thread. 26 is like peak condition. She I'll be fine.

feathermucker · 20/06/2024 19:59

She'll be fine. Kindly, save your worries for things that are worth worrying about.

TudorClock · 20/06/2024 19:59

If you put 10k training plan into Google you will see that most if not all plans will stop at around 8/ 8.5k mark. Its very normal to approach the full distance in training but not do the full thing till race day, it sounds like she is exactly where she needs to be 🙂

Frangipanyoul8r · 20/06/2024 20:05

10K!! Dear lord, she’ll live.

Hardknocks · 20/06/2024 20:09

Oh my god she’s going to be absolutely fine. I ran a 10k with absolutely ZERO training. I was lapped by a man in a peppa pig costume, it was mostly humiliating but I definitely didn’t hurt myself 😂

Meadowfinch · 20/06/2024 20:10

She'll be absolutely fine.

I ran my first 10k at 52. I'd only run 8k in training. The support of other runners got me through on the day.

MaryBeardsShoes · 20/06/2024 20:13

She’ll be absolutely fine!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/06/2024 20:17

I ran a 10k the other week. I'm 63 and regularly train, so that's not noteworthy. However, I ran it with my daughter, who's only a bit older than yours, who ran with a chronic hangover, having done almost no training at all.
We came in at only a bit over an hour. Your daughter will be fine, although you may want to see someone about your anxiety regarding her. Being so worried about a healthy 26 year old won't be doing your health any good.

Mynaddmawr · 20/06/2024 20:22

She'll be grand. She'd be absolutely fine running 10k without any practice- She'd have sore legs and a stitch but she wouldnt be keeling over! Very sensible to build up to it though. 8.5km to 10km is nothing

rainbowunicorn · 20/06/2024 20:32

It's just over 6 miles. Nothing will happen to her.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 20/06/2024 20:37

Give your head a wobble, OP. It's a 10k, not an ultra marathon! She'll be fine.

Alittlefrustrated · 20/06/2024 20:42

Do you suffer from anxiety generally OP? If you do, there is help available, id you speak to your GP.

Scruffily · 20/06/2024 20:43

She just needs to pace herself. When my DD did her first one, she was a bit worried about all the people who went charging off at the start. She passed quite a few of them in the second half, some of them collapsed at the side.

DogUnderDesk · 20/06/2024 20:46

She'll find it irritatingly easy at that age.

When I'm unfit and need to do a 10k, I do three 3k runs with half-k walking breaks. Job done.

eurochick · 20/06/2024 20:48

She's 26! I was expecting you to say she was a small child! It will be fine. I was training for a half marathon at that age and not finding it taxing.

beckybarefoot · 20/06/2024 20:48

ive not read all the replies so i apologise... you dont mention how old she is? if she can easy run 8.5k, she will most definately be able to run 10k. is there a reason why you think she might have heart failure? does she have issues with her heart? is there a family link?

if this is more a 'you' thing, as in anxiety and catastrosizing (if thats even a word), do you perhaps need to speak to someone?
