Just wanted to come on here to share my excitement! I spent most of 2023 with an injury which prevented me from doing a lot of sports I love! However, one thing I can do is walk and I could walk for hours/ days and I've used it to get me through many a mental battle during injury. Problem is when co-parent my LO I can't get out as much so for 4/5 days I don't do much and it gets me down, so after a lot of putting a walking pad/ treadmill in my basket and taking it out trying to justify the cost I've finally given in and got myself a walking pad and I'm so full of excitement and hope to be able to get some steps in of an evening when I have my little one! Just had to share my happy news and see if anyone has had one and can help me justify spending on such a purchase!?

I picked up an absolute bargain yesterday and got this secondhand but pretty much unused for seventy quid! https://www.argos.co.uk/product/6046848 It is a bit big but thankfully, it fits ok in my livingroom. (I'll have to move it at Christmas as it's in the tree space but that's an end of year problem!)

I got it mainly for walking backwards on as backwards walking is insanely good for you but draws a lot of negative attention when you do it in public. I'm very excited as I'm recovering from an injury at a time when I'm very busy with sedentary work. And for most of last year, I've really struggled to get my normal levels activity and the less I do, the less motivated I feel. The mental aspect of my current work is leaving me tired and I crave just mindless vegging out when it's done. It's stupid because I know that I'll actually manage the mental work easier if I get more exercise but I seem to have hit a wall of exercise or work, not both.

The best thing with the treadmill as opposed to any of my equipment that I used before my injury is that it starts out nice and easy. If I'm feeling like vegging, which seems to be my current state, I can trick myself by saying I'll only do a gentle ten minutes. I know that getting started is a huge part of the battle for me at the moment. So I'm really hoping that it will let me find a way to exercise, even with the current demands on my brain!

Can you adjust it for gradient? I enjoy hill walking on the treadmill at the gym.
Thanks.

@alittleprivacy sounds like you’re having a rough time. Is there anything we can do to support you?

Those with motion sickness issues might prefer a mini elliptical. I have this one, can use seated or standing and you can stop whenever you like. It stops the runaway feeling.

Thank you for linking to this. I bought one on the strength of this thread and it's perfect for use at my standing desk. My legs don't know what's hit them!

So with that walking pad, there's nothing to hold onto?

Aw, thank you but I'm fine. I'm just normally very active but I broke a bone in my foot in the summer. And as it healed up I just got very busy with work that I have to do sitting. I'm a bit mentally drained so finding it hard to find the energy to move physically when I have time. Even though I know I'll feel better with more exercise, I was having trouble getting going.

The treadmill is going great though. It's less daunting to think, "I'll just have a little walk" and once I start I'm more likely to keep going!

RiseAgainMum · 17/01/2024 19:32

I tried Wall Pilates today. It was a challenge finding enough wall space so that I could watch the free YouTube class. I really enjoyed it .

Glad you’ve found something to help you. I use EFT aka tapping a lot to help me when I’m feeling emotionally drained. That helps to shift things.

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 17/01/2024 21:31

What's the difference between a regular treadmill and a walking pad? Just that there isn't any handle bit at the front? And can walking pads go at an incline as treadmills can?

Any reviews on the cheaper ones? (£200, 150)

I have a cheaper walking pad and use it in my third floor flat - I have a mat in between it and the hard floor. I have set it up to the side of the tv so I tend to watch YouTube videos while on it. It goes up to 10 km/ph but I find I can do a brisk walk at 5K /ph. A slow jog would start at around 7kph

This is the one I got https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0CL6NCVQP/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1&th=1

I used to have a more expensive folding treadmill which I sold before I moved due to lack of use . I don’t know why I wasn’t more motivated to use that but I went months without setting foot on it during the pandemic!

I much prefer this walking pad and it’s get used at least a few times a week, but the I’d say it’s definitely better for walking or slow jogs than for fast sprints - I prefer the sturdier treadmills you get at the gym for the latter.

I'd recommend one with handles. Ours is good for running, but if you are just walking, I suppose a pad would be fine. I use it at 8-9mph and definitely need handles.

Ebeneser · 18/01/2024 19:23

Not a walking pad, but for those of you thinking about a treadmill for walking, this is a great treadmill. In comparison to most treadmills it has a slightly smaller foot print and it folds.
Cracking price at the moment as well

My cousin has a mini Walking Pad, we had a long phone call on Monday evening and she used it for 40 minutes of our conversation. Im impressed. I want one now.

Ohwhatthewhatwhatnow · 18/01/2024 23:15

@MILTOBE that's correct. I used to have full on treadmill and had to get rid due to lack of space. This is really compact (I hoped it would fit under my sofa but not quite 🙈) But the benefits are huge.
Edit; bonkers keyboard

Didsomeonesaydogs · 28/01/2024 22:30

Does anyone use a walking pad with a standing desk?

If so, do you find your fitness tracker manages to count your steps you take on your walking pad?

Or do some of them not register due to having your hand on the mouse/keyboard?

hasitreallybeenthatlong · 05/01/2024 22:23

Ah thanks for the tip! I'm in a flat it is meant to be a quieter one so I'm hoping the noise doesn't annoy the neighbours 😳

Put a large sheet of thick cork underneath it and it will absorb some of the sound.

Rainallnight · 29/01/2024 12:18

For those of you using it with a standing desk, what sort of work are you doing? I see someone said they managed emails but is anyone managing meetings etc?

Talisin · 29/01/2024 14:07

Strongly leaning toward getting one of these next month. I am looking at the Citysport or the Dskeuzeew. I know two or three people on here have the Citysport - a few of the Amazon reviews talk about the belt slipping to the side, do you find this a problem?

hasitreallybeenthatlong · 29/01/2024 16:03

Have to say I'm chuffed with mine! I use it regularly. It's not as quiet as I had hoped but it gets my steps in especially in mornings like this morning when I wouldn't of left the house because of weather being rather miserable and times when I have my little one and can't get out. I'm on the look out for a desk riser so I can work while using it, unless I see a second hand one it will be a while before I get one.

Good for you. I usually get my steps in by marching in front of the tv but I’d quite like a little pad. Is it easy to store?

Matching in front of the Tv is a brill idea! My apartment is tiny so luckily the one I chose stands on end and stands next to the wall next to dining table I just get it out when needed it has little wheels on one end for easy manoeuvre.
