Just wanted to come on here to share my excitement! I spent most of 2023 with an injury which prevented me from doing a lot of sports I love! However, one thing I can do is walk and I could walk for hours/ days and I've used it to get me through many a mental battle during injury. Problem is when co-parent my LO I can't get out as much so for 4/5 days I don't do much and it gets me down, so after a lot of putting a walking pad/ treadmill in my basket and taking it out trying to justify the cost I've finally given in and got myself a walking pad and I'm so full of excitement and hope to be able to get some steps in of an evening when I have my little one! Just had to share my happy news and see if anyone has had one and can help me justify spending on such a purchase!?

I got a small treadmill last year and did the couch to 5K, so now I can run 25 mins every other day - I am 70. Feel much fitter on the local hills.

thanks for this! And massive well done to you. I am 60 and too embarrassed to go to excessive class as I’m so unfit. It’s been a rough 2023 and I’ve not been looking after myself. You have inspired me with couch to 5 k well done!

siblingrevelryagain · 29/01/2024 21:23

It’s not quite the same, but I had a detached retina and many surgeries which meant I didn’t feel stable/safe walking outside for the past couple of years, and also didn’t feel safe doing it in the dark and didn’t want to leave my kids to go walking (single parent), so a year ago I started off doing lengths up and down the hall and then progressed to laps of the garden.

it’s not big and I’m sure I look like a weirdo to the neighbours, but I get approx 15k steps in each day, it improves my mood and I’ve built in an excuse-proof form of exercise; I can do it regardless of the weather or how busy I am. I love walking just as the sun comes up, I’m out in nature but I can do it in between meetings and cooking dinner.

its made a massive difference to my mood and mental health. I work from home so I’d love a walking mat (I have a treadmill but it’s a glorified coat hanger as I don’t have room in my office for it

I'm looking at one and notice it says not to use it on carpet - what do you need to put it on them (and is that something expensive?)
TIA

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/01/2024 00:38

Fantastic. Walking is seriously underrated. It helped me to lose 7 stones!

We use a rubber mat under ours.

Not sure if anyone’s still following this thread…just got a citysports walking pad and early signs are promising. Reviews on Amazon are very mixed so am not expecting a huge amount from it but hopefully will be a kickstart. At least every minute I spend pacing away on it is another minute I’m not spending raiding the fridge!! 😂Want to lose about 10kg so fingers crossed!

ChaoticCrumble · 01/02/2024 17:24

I just bought this for under my desk - currently has a voucher for £100 off. It's very long (so I am actually now getting a bigger desk!) and you can't stand on this one, but I think I'll get a lot of use out of it

ChaoticCrumble · 01/02/2024 17:25

Forgot to say, it's an elliptical cycling thingy

Itisnearlyspring · 01/02/2024 18:58

My redliro walking pad arrived today and it is great. I got it from amazon with £50 off reduced to £200. It is only 9cm high so fits under my bed.

I work from home and it is the first weekday this year that I have managed to do 8000 steps. I have used it this evening in front of the TV, I don't think I could work using it as my coordination is too poor. The only thing is it has made me quite dizzy after I got off, does anyone else find this?

Greybeardy · 02/02/2024 16:53

@Itisnearlyspring yep, also feel a bit like I’ve just got of a boat at the end…passes quickly tho.

BatsVSBelfrys · 02/02/2024 17:22

@Itisnearlyspring yes I returned mine pretty quickly after buying it. Wanted to love it and it worked great but it made me feel really sick and dizzy so there a bit fat no for me

Didsomeonesaydogs · 02/02/2024 18:08

@BatsVSBelfrys @Itisnearlyspring and @Greybeardy do you have this same “being on a boat” dizzy sensation when you use a treadmill at the gym?

BatsVSBelfrys · 02/02/2024 18:21

@Didsomeonesaydogs no I'm fine on a treadmill. I'm not fine on a boat or anything like that

I believe treadmill not an issue because they're large, you have a focus (usually) of a large screen and there are side bars

The walking pad is small, very compact and you do feel a bit like you're going nowhere

So I did like it a lot, it's a great bit of kit but I have to say that you need to proceed with caution if motion sickness is a thing for you

Itisnearlyspring · 02/02/2024 20:03

@Didsomeonesaydogs no I have not noticed it at the gym but was wondering if it was because I was watching TV whilst using it. Will try it without the TV next time. I felt slightly less dizzy today when I reduced the speed very gradually before stopping.

Greybeardy · 02/02/2024 20:23

never set foot in a gym/used a proper treadmill so haven't got anything to compare, sorry.

alittleprivacy · 03/02/2024 19:23

On the motion sickness/being on a boat sensation. Since I've had mine I've mainly used it for walking backwards uphill, which is amazing for your knees. I've never had even the slightest sensation of being on a boat, before or after using it doing that. Whether listening to music or watching tv. Today I turned it forward and walked for half an hour or so forwards and afterwards I absolutely had the walking on a boat sensation for a few minutes afterwards. It was very odd, though tbh, not unpleasant. So backwards walking may be a solution for people struggling with motion sickness.

Itisnearlyspring · 04/02/2024 15:04

@alittleprivacy that is interesting. I will have to give it a try although my coordination is hopeless so I will probably fall off if I try to go backwards.

Do you put something under yours to angle it or do you have one that adjusts to give a gradient? I have only ever seen flat ones.

I tried using mine today without the TV and was a lot less dizzy so maybe that is the issue.

alittleprivacy · 04/02/2024 16:07

Yeah, mine is more of a standard treadmill and has an option to be flat or on a gradient. I used it forwards a second time and again had the feeling of walking on a ferry in rough seas for a few minutes afterwards. When I use it for backwards, even for longer periods, there is no sensation at all. I assume it's because my body and brain are used to forward walking, so has to adapt to walking forward on the spot, then takes a few minutes to get back to normal. Whereas walking backwards isn't normal, so my brain doesn't need to adapt to walking backwards on the spot as there is no difference between what I'm doing and what I expect. And when I swap, I switch from backwards steps going nowhere to forward steps with movement so my brain doesn't expect them to be the same.

I'd suggest going at the absolute slowest speed possible for backwards walking to get used to it.

2024horizons · 22/02/2024 20:24

So good to see these gaining popularity. I bought the Urevo pad in November. Used it daily since. Probably on about 25k steps today while doing my office job.

I would struggle with a standing desk as I would definitely lean on one leg, but walking is natural.

I have ADHD and its helped a lot with focus. I also just can't bear the thought of sitting at a desk , it was okay when I was in my 30s and desperate and motivated for money, now I despite it and feel like I am slowly killing myself sitting 7 hours a day. So the treadmill solves all that 😂

evilharpy · 18/03/2024 10:34

Sorry to bump an oldish post but I have ordered a walking pad! I'm getting the one that folds in half (the brand is called Walking Pad) from Amazon because I'm desperately short on space. Also getting a standing desk riser thing. I spend a lot of time reading stuff for work and figure I can do all that whilst walking.

My job is fully sedentary and I currently sit down for at least 7 hours a day. I do exercise and am not horribly unfit but it's mainly spin and pilates. I was on my feet all day yesterday and really struggled and am feeling the effects of it today, it's been a bit of a wake up call.

Sunsetboardwalk · 18/03/2024 19:07

Please let us know what you think of it! @evilharpy

2024horizons · 20/03/2024 18:14

I still love mine , a word of caution be sure to do normal walking too, and stretches if you use it a lot. It can shorten your stride length which isn't normal movement, I read some research on that. Especially as its one straight line, humans tend not to walk like that.

A couple of hours a day probably wouldn't do that. Benefits defo outweigh sitting all day.

Which one do you have 2024horizons?

Congratulation! I bought a walking pad just before Christmas and I really like it. Mine is set up so that I can watch tv and walk and that works well for me and make the minutes fly by.

I do find that it takes me a couple of minutes to regain my 'land legs' when I get off of the pad though but that may just be me as I have a notoriously bad sense of balance!

Could I ask for a link as there are so many to choose from! Yours sounds good! Thanks!
