Peloton experiences

Hi all,

Apologies if this is a recurring topic. I did a search but couldn’t find anything recent.

I m toying with the idea of getting a peloton, but because they are so hugely expensive, I wanted to ask around for personal experiences.

Before I had my baby, I used to run regularly - usually 5x a week. However, I ve found it really hard to get back into this, as usually by the time she’s asleep it’s getting dark and I don’t want to run in the dark.
I like the idea of something at home where I can just jump on and get a good workout which is why I m drawn to this as an idea.

Questions I have:
Are they good for post baby weight loss?
Are the classes enjoyable and suitable for beginners?
If I ve never done exercise bikes before, would you recommend?
Are they quiet to use?
Anything negative I need to know about them, or anything amazing I may not have come across?

Thanks for any and all experiences. 😊

OP you won’t regret it! Love my Peloton. Check out Bradley Rose he’s my favourite ❤️

EvelynKatie · 11/04/2023 16:15

Ah hope you love it OP! I originally started with a cheaper spin bike during lockdown and just used the app. Enjoyed it so much so sold it and got an actual Peloton and I've been addicted ever since! I also do all the strength training classes and have joined a community online where we do challenges etc. together to keep us motivated.

hettiethehare · 11/04/2023 16:28

Brilliant - congrats OP! Hope you love it as much as I do!

I started off with the You Can Ride program as well. Once I'd finished that, I did a few more beginner/ advanced beginner rides before I summoned up the courage to try some non-beginner rides and they were absolutely fine!

I thought I’d come back here rather than post a new thread!
Buttttt my peloton finally arrived!! (What’s with the so long wait time for delivery???)

I ve had it two days and had a go on both days, but oh my god I am knackered. I did a 20 minute beginners workout and the sweat was pouring off me. It was almost embarrassing as I thought I was fitter than that!

Is 20 mins sufficient for a beginning? I thought 30 as a minimum but I tried to stack the classes and when I began the next one I just couldn’t do it. How long did it take you to build up some stamina?

Apart from that I’m loving the high tech-ness of it! And the fact that as soon as my daughter is asleep 5 mins later I can be getting a hard work out. 😊

Oh I did a 10 min one and thought I would have to ring an ambulance Grin
It gets easier. Do beginner classes, then advanced beginner and build up
You can sort by difficulty too. The power zone programme is amazing for building up but you have to do a 20 min test which is all out for 20 mins. In 6 months, I doubled my output on my FTP test and at 8 months I did a 90 min class

lunar1 · 25/04/2023 18:50

Which instructors have you tried so far? My favourite by far is Tunde, she also has an introductory work out programme which I like. I find she's encouraging and not at all patronising like some of them!

Shadesofscarlett · 25/04/2023 18:55

yep start with 10 minutes. Lanebreaks are also good. Try Programmes - You Can Ride is good starting point. I am doing arms with Tunde and Core with Emma Lovewell. The barre stuff is also really good as is meditation. there is so much to try. But it is really hard - i am on my 150th ride and struggle with 30 mins in the saddle, but then I am quite old. It is challenging to push us.

mafsfan · 25/04/2023 18:57

I think 20 mins is actually a great time to start off with because then you can add to it once you're happy with that.

20 mins + 5 min cool down
20 mins + 10 mins strength
20 mins + 20 mins Pilates

I do a proper mix of 20 and 30 mins and add to it if I have a little bit more time. I tend to pick by music rather than time at the moment but I know as I progress I'll probably aim to get into the power zone classes or mix in more HIIT or climb rides.

Glad you're enjoying it!

I had app for 20 months before I managed to get second hand bike last September and I've been on it mist days! It's way more than a bike to me and as a plus size girl who has always hated exercise! I love it I do it because I genuinely love it and not because I'm trying to loose weight . It's been amazing for my mental health and I've been to the studio on Covent garden 3 times! For live classes with Ben and Sam ! I'm so grateful I found it! I also have joined the fb group of a few instructors particularly Ben's army r so welcoming and a real community spirt. 💗

Tgilaura · 25/04/2023 19:50

This power zone thing sounds great! I ll probably need an ambulance at the end of it but I ll give it a go.
so far I liked Bradley rose - found him quite genuine. I did one with another lady but I was in so much pain I don’t remember her name 😅😅😅😅

Do Jenn Sherman’s singalong ride. Epic and my new favourite!

Kyse · 25/04/2023 20:19

Oh if you come across a Kendall hip hop ride marked beginner, it's an error. I managed to gasp LIAR at the screen Grin

Hannah Corbin does hellish 10 min barre which I hate but keep doing for some reason

You sometimes find 30 mins are easier as there is longer breaks, whereas 20 mins is trying to get a tough workout in a shorter time

I think it might have been this one!!! Omg it was brutal. I was thinking I m too rubbish even for the beginner section 😂😂😂😂

I've read so much about Kendall that I haven't braved it yet in 3 months. I don't think I'm anywhere near ready for it!! Olivia is another one who gets mentioned for being a killer!

I like Ally Love. She looks so nice and gentle but she can be fierce! Also like Leanne, Bradley, both Hannah's. There are loads!

hettiethehare · 25/04/2023 20:49

I started off with the You Can Ride program as well and liked the structure and a bit of an intro to some of the different styles of class/ instructors.

I did that, then a couple of weeks of beginner/ adv beginner classes before trying a couple of the normal classes based on music choice and realised they were absolutely fine - I tend to keep within the 6/7 difficulty rating though and err of the side of caution with the cadence/ resistance callouts.

Gothambutnotahamster · 25/04/2023 20:50

Jess King's Sweat Steady are brill, Sam Yo is fab & Jen Sherman's singalongs are amazing as you don't notice the time or the effort!

Yet again, my finger is hovering over the ‘buy’ button on the peloton website… especially not they are offering the refurbished ones for under £1k. Obviously the news about them making a loss is concerning - what do you think would happen if the company went under - I assume it’ll be bought out by someone else and classes would still run?
Are you all still fanatical about it? I run a lot at the moment but fancy doing something different that is probably better on your joints.

Even if the live classes weren't available there's a massive back catalogue of on demand
I've had mine since March 2022 and am still using it regularly and also the weights classes etc
I would say take out extended warranty after the initial warranty as I had a few issues with bearings and it was all covered

Patsykenning · 19/02/2024 17:25

Thank you @PawsisShady My peloton loving friends have said they think it’ll be bought out by a bigger company anyway so will carry on. Argh, I still can’t decide!

PawsisShady · 19/02/2024 19:25

I mean people have been saying for years they're going under, but they've just re released the tread
I've done 327 workouts in 2 years and would rather eat beans on toast every day than give it up

theconfidenceofwho · 19/02/2024 23:33

Me too @PawsisShady - we ummed and ahhed buying ours 72 weeks ago (72 week streak!) because of all the doom & gloom reporting of them going under. So glad we ignored that & took the plunge anyway!

Ella6 · 27/04/2025 17:33

@Duvetdweller do you still have the access code for the app please? I’d love to check it out, considering a Peloton even though it seems prices have skyrocketed recently…

Booksaresick · 29/04/2025 14:59

Hi OP did you go for the standard or the bike plus? I’m considering it too and I’m quite keen on the swivel screen.
