Moving from 5k to 10k fancy joining me?

I re-started C25K on Boxing Day and I’m now running 2-3x a week 5k but thinking of slowly building it up to 10k. I’ve done this before but it’s been two years since I’ve run this distance comfortably if anyone fancies joining me.

I’m early 50s & 3stone overweight struggling a lot with menopausal crap so running is giving me some positive head space back as I hope to regain ME through running again. I managed 6k this morning so hope to build from there slowly adding 0.5-1k each week 😃

I'm 60 and 3 stone overweight and have just got back to 10k. Am aiming for a half marathon later this year so halfway there!
You can do this. Adding 0.5 to 1km per week is perfect.

Passportpondery · 04/04/2023 12:53

I’m here!

I started C25K in the New Year. I usually run twice a week, mainly 3k on a week day and 6k on a weekend. I would like to build to a 10k next.

I’m 37, not overweight but struggle with food and so am not always fuelled enough to sustain a big run.

SpringMermaid987 · 04/04/2023 15:38

Hellooo nice to have some fellow runners & @Passportpondery great that you have carried on we can do this! I have name changed from winter to spring 😃

@Clementineorsatsuma i have previously got to HM level 2yrs ago but some health issues saw me stop. I’d be super happy to get back to 10k again as I know from before that made a 5k feel easy 😂I hope to run 5k tomorrow body willing.

Hi! I'm here from the c25k thread. Looks like I'm doing a ParkRun on Saturday, I'm apprehensive and excited at the same time. I've only managed 3.54km so far but I have a lot of hills so I'm hoping the flat park run will be doable :)

SpringMermaid987 · 05/04/2023 04:25

@Spirini I hope you enjoy parkrun, my local one is flat and I just find the people around me keep me going. It’s always my fastest run of the week as when I’m out on my own I tend to walk or stretch more.

I’ve got a sick DD at the moment with what could be covid so really hoping that’s not yet another school holiday ruined as it does seem to keep happening and I’m so so fed up of it. So guessing the rest of us will get it next.

Yes please! I've signed for a half marathon in six months to raise money, and hoping to do a 10k as a mid point. Not done very much training at all so far but managed to do the park run last weekend.

Spirini · 05/04/2023 13:06

@SpringMermaid987 fingers crossed she gets well soon and isn't contagious.

I got out again today and as I said in the other thread, I've been all wrong on my pace. According to Strava I'm 6:47km/h, probably a lot more realistic than the 8-something my c25k app has been telling me 😊.

Going to have a two day break now til the parkrun, as long as I finish in under an hour I'll be happy

SpringMermaid987 · 05/04/2023 15:10

That sounds like a great pace @Spirini well done on your run. I couldn’t get a run this morn just a dog walk as child was too poorly to be left for very long with her teenage sister. Hopefully I can get out tomorrow as DH is working from home.

Welcome @Greymalkin12 i hope your training to HM goes well. I darent dream that big yet, I’ve done a few in the past but I’m just too heavy at the moment. My friend did the London HM at the weekend and said we should do it next year… it got me thinking but I’ll wait till Nov to decide to build up the distance again.

Spirini · 05/04/2023 16:08

@Greymalkin12 half marathon, best of luck with your training! I can't imagine doing 13 miles.

Is anyone following a 10k training plan? I found this one that I thought looked good:

runningoverload.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Training-plans-5k-To-10k.pdf

SpringMermaid987 · 06/04/2023 06:55

@Spirini im not following a plan as such I’m going to do roughly what I did before which was a mix of one run that I progressively make longer each week by 0.5-1km, one fast run (parkrun 5k), and another that I’ll mix it up depending how I feel intervals/ trail w dog or bit hilly or no run just a Hitt weights session. Plus I walk over 10,000 steps everyday with the dog. That worked for me before but I don’t have an event to aim for plus I tend to not run as much once it gets into summer as I use my bike more., I much prefer winter running. Your plan looks good I’ve heard the Nike Run Club plans can be good too.

Spirini · 06/04/2023 09:20

Interesting, you know I might copy your adding on a bit of distance approach actually. I think it makes sense based on runs from my house because there's a loop I currently do that could be slowly widened/lengthened Smile

I feel weird not going out today...

SpringMermaid987 · 09/04/2023 18:39

Missed parkrun yesterday due to other things taking priority but got out for a very slow 5.5k this morning was struggling with energy, so not sure if I’m fighting off the virus both kids have had all week…hope not. I have got out on my bike a couple of times this week to keep the legs ticking over though.

Hi I would love to join you. Am 50 and can do 5km but really want to move up to 10km. I started doing it around a year ago but then started a house refurbishment project and have been side tracked and not living at home. Hopefully back in in the next few weeks then can start training again.

It took me ages to do C25K and I got to about 7km before I stopped last time. I'm v v slow so found I was adding 0.5km a week and sometimes repeating weeks but I don't mind it taking a bit of time if I get there.

I think if you feel knackered slowing stuff down is fine for a week till you feel a bit better. Hope it's not a virus!

Rocketpants50 · 09/04/2023 20:20

I am with you. Am not fast and carry to much weight but would love to be able to do a bit more than 5k. Started couch to 5k in Jan.

Spirini · 09/04/2023 21:35

I did my 5k parkrun, very pleased with myself. My time was 32 minutes :)

Passportpondery · 09/04/2023 22:20

I got out this morning after a week off and it was really tough. Did 5.5k and hated every second of it. I couldn’t get my breathing right, I had stitch, my calves hurt and I couldn’t get my head in it.

Hoping I’m on better for next week!

SpringMermaid987 · 10/04/2023 19:24

Welcome @Fibonacci13 & @Rocketpants50 sounds like we are in similar places.
well done @Spirini that’s brilliant I hope you enjoyed it.
sorry to hear you had a tough run @Passportpondery that’s what I felt like yesterday but tonight I have just gone out again somewhere new so I had to navigate but managed a really enjoyable 6.5k run /walk as bit mix of trail & lanes. So don’t give up. I’m pleased I explored a new area to me as I’m often near this place waiting for my DD who’s at her sports training, so it gives me more options to run here.

SpringMermaid987 · 14/04/2023 06:58

Missed my opportunity to run yesterday due to family stuff and now visiting in-laws in hilly Wales. I do have my run kit and trail shoes with me so hope to walk …attempt run… something today or tomorrow ;it’s raining hard at mo & I’m feeling whoosiee) 😂

OP posts:
SpringMermaid987 · 14/04/2023 06:59

Im actually looking forward to getting kids back to school next week and my 3x runs in again as it’s always more of a juggle in the holidays.

OP posts:
Spirini · 14/04/2023 10:16

@SpringMermaid987 yeah me too, I did a couple of evening runs which I'm not too keen on but it's the way I could fit them in with kids home.

I got 4k in this morning, my slowest time yet but weirdly didn't feel it.
Actually I tell a lie; I got new trainers last week and I tried a run in them and had to stop multiple times because they were uncomfortable and making my legs feel really heavy. Think I'm going to have to get another pair :(

SpringMermaid987 · 14/04/2023 15:01

@Spirini rather than swap the trainers just yet try lacing up differently or try diff insoles. Personally I use elastic laces & fairly loose as that works for me. If you have old trainers that you liked the insoles in swap them over. Worth a try as cheaper than new shoes.

Passportpondery · 14/04/2023 21:04

I went back out yesterday and had another disaster. I just can’t get my head back into it, can’t get my breathe and am walking all the time.

I’m tempted to go back to the C25k programme and build up again. Not sure what’s happened to make me lose it so quickly but I’m really annoyed with myself!

Fibonacci13 · 15/04/2023 12:50

It's annoying isn't it. I have had many weeks like that!

Trotted out a slow 5km this morning. Downloaded a 10km training plan and will hopefully start it in earnest in a few weeks time.

I really need to work on my stamina which isn't great at the moment
