Moving from 5k to 10k fancy joining me?

I re-started C25K on Boxing Day and I’m now running 2-3x a week 5k but thinking of slowly building it up to 10k. I’ve done this before but it’s been two years since I’ve run this distance comfortably if anyone fancies joining me.

@Passportpondery keep at it and I'm sure you'll get your groove back. Maybe it's hormonal? Or your sleep?

I don't think that would work @SpringMermaid987. They're just all wrong, they're rubbing my ankle, they're heavy and the back heel is too high for me :(

Ikeameatballs · 15/04/2023 21:03

I’m going to commit to running 10K outdoors this summer. I can do 5k in just under 30min and I can do 10K on a treadmill but I struggle to make it to that outdoors. In part it’s because I worry about needing the loo (!) but treadmill is easier and more distracting for me as I watch TV and can keep easy track of my pace and distance.

I did a treadmill 10K this morning and will aim for 5.5k outdoors on Mon!

JinxMonsoon · 15/04/2023 21:16

Can l join you? I won a ballot place in HT later this year, and l am a new-ish 5k runner. Hoping to do 10K early July. I am aiming to break 6k barrier tomorrow. Had a rubbish park run today, with my second slowest time ever (it was a mud bath though).

Fibonacci13 · 16/04/2023 06:51

What trainers are they @Spirini

Everyone told me, including my physio, that Hoka's would be perfect for my feet and I hated them. They also felt heavy on my feet for some odd reason. I can only run in one type of Brooks (wide Adrenaline's) and that's it. Even their other models of shoe don't work for my feet!

Codlingmoths · 16/04/2023 07:31

Me! I’m carrying a few post babying,40, trying to get back into running and just chickened out of signing up for an 8km Mother’s Day fun run (in oz so different Mother’s Day) as I’m getting a 5 aerobic rating Ie overtraining if I stagger through 7km. I’m running mostly once a week on weekends, reformer pilates on Thursday, and did have an online midweek strength class but have to stop in 2 weeks as Dh goes back to work from parental leave so I can’t do anything in the mornings then (which I’m a little grumpy about). I think I need to keep up the strength part somehow to get faster. I just did 6km in 6m50s kms and it’s a recent step to be hitting the under 7m /km regularly

mamnotmum · 16/04/2023 07:40

I've never ran 10k but I'd love to be fitter. I did couch to 5k years ago and have recently done a few park runs so know 5k is possible. I always aim for under 30 mins (last park run 28m30) but I am absolutely done it afterwards.

A couple of things a read said the best approach is jogging then sprinting a few times to boost fitness. What plans are you following?

Greymalkin12 · 16/04/2023 17:05

Having set a rather ambitious goal I have only run four times in the last two weeks - a park run and a run two weekends ago and then a park run and a Sunday run (4 miles) this weekend. I am feeling a bit more enthused - it is for a good cause! Glad to be in such company on this thread.

Passportpondery · 16/04/2023 20:45

I’ve been so tempted to give up, but I’m heading out with a friend tomorrow for a slow 5k before work and hoping having some company might get my head back into it.

I’m not sleeping or eating well at the minute so may be linked to that.

Spirini · 16/04/2023 22:57

@Fibonacci13 Nike Revolutions - I shouldn't have scrimped because now I'm probably going to need to buy something else!

Spirini · 16/04/2023 22:57

@Passportpondery don't give up, it'll pass!

SpringMermaid987 · 17/04/2023 04:37

I’m feeling similar @Passportpondery after 4 broken nights sleep and a 2.30am start this morning to collect eldest child after a sports trip away. I’ve got my run kit on lying on sofa thinking i could sneak out at sunrise as I really need a run but also have busy work day plus need to walk dog & will be exhausted by lunch time…

Some great times there @Codlingmoths and @mamnotmum I got out for a short 3.4km this morning and have a personal best pace of 6m36sec per km.

I know it's not all about weight loss but I'm not losing anything, maybe I need to up my mileage more?
This is what I've done in the last week and a half:
4.98km
3.29km
4.49km
4.20km
3.36km

Passportpondery · 17/04/2023 11:43

I made it out this morning and did 4 miles. Was hard going at times and we did have a bit of a walk break half way through. It felt good to go out with someone though and keep me occupied while running.

SpringMermaid987 · 17/04/2023 14:51

Well done @Passportpondery i did a 45mins fast walk with dog but nursing a sore back so I’m not going to run today also exhausted after only 4hrs sleep I need self care more than a run today. Tomorrow I should be able to run though as have the time after school run yah!

OP posts:
SpringMermaid987 · 18/04/2023 21:04

Short but ticked a box 3.5k at decent pace for me whilst I had a spare 25mins waiting for DD. Still nursing a very sore back so I’m having to be extra careful.

I'm struggling to fit any runs in this week as we aren't back in our house and I can't leave the dog (and he won't run with me as he can't heel run, he just out runs me the whole time!).

Did an hour fast walk with the dog this morning though and ended up walking around 7-8km today anyway.

I'm far slower than most of you - my current 5km time is around 35 mins but I can do a 6mins 45 seconds km if I push myself. I would like to do a 10km in 70 mins as I think I should get my 5km down to 32mins eventually!

Hopefully will be back home next week!

Fibonacci13 · 18/04/2023 21:17

@Spirini it always takes about 4-6 weeks for my metabolism to kick in and then the weight loss starts happening

Fibonacci13 · 18/04/2023 21:19

(Also think it depends on age - definitely gets harder to lose weight as we get older annoyingly!)

SpringMermaid987 · 19/04/2023 11:09

@Spirini yep sorry I’ve never lost weight just running, always needed a lot of calorie restriction to achieve it and even that doesn’t work now I’m in my 50s 😞 I’ve been reading that book “Why we eat too much” by Andrew Jenkinson and was nodding along to lots of it but now I’ve got to the last sections on what to do and it’s just a tad depressing tbh.

@Fibonacci13 I’m running the same pace as you now, but two years I got my 10k to 66mins and parkrun to 31-32mins. I’m now struggling to do a regular 35-36min parkrun but I’m nursing a feel illness issues at the moment plus I’ve lost my 3x a week running streak the last month and really noticed the difference.

OP posts:
Spirini · 19/04/2023 12:52

@Fibonacci13 @SpringMermaid987 You're both right, the calories used in a 35 minute run are depressingly low. I've started using myfitnesspal and I hope that'll keep me on track. I think I've been fooling myself on how much I've been eating.

Spirini · 19/04/2023 18:26

I did a 5km today, but I had to stop to walk on two very steep hills which is a bit crap. I'd mapped it beforehand and thought it was going to be about 5.3km- if I'm going to build up to 10km I need to increase my distance...will know for the next time though and I'll had an extra loop in.

@SpringMermaid987 how did you hurt your back? I hope it gets better soon.

SpringMermaid987 · 19/04/2023 19:30

@Spirini the back issue is from years ago plus genetics (both my mum & auntie have identical issues) and every now & then it gives me a warning (like I’ve been kicked in the back disc bruising) and acute sciatic pain, so I’m icing it now and I’ll probably have to stick to cycling for this week as that doesn’t aggregate it. But keeping moving is key as sitting or lying doesn’t help at all. I’ve had a sit /stand desk for years at work.

OP posts:
Fibonacci13 · 20/04/2023 07:11

@Spirini it's so easy for those calories to add up, depressingly so! In old house, the run out the door meant I either went uphill or downhill so I used to go up first and come back down. In temporary house, everything was flat and it makes it so much easier to run. Don't underestimate how hard hills make a run.

@SpringMermaid987 I've also just finished reading that book. Like you say it makes a lot of sense but the actual doing is a lot harder.

I agree with you, I really notice when I run less regularly and the impact it has on my time (and motivation). I hope the weather brightening up a bit will make it easier.

Spirini · 20/04/2023 09:06

@Fibonacci13 I live at the top of a hill which is a pain in the arse. Good for my training I suppose, the parkrun I did a couple of weeks ago was flat so it'll help me prepare for the next one.

@SpringMermaid987 that sounds nasty, don't overdo it. It's so frustrating when you want to exercise but you can't. I have an old back injury from a fall and I've to be so careful with stretching or else I seize up completely. I thought I had arthritis or something but I've had every scan imaginable and it just appears to be soft tissue/tight muscles. I walk around most evenings with a TENS machine stuck to either my lower back or somewhere on one of my thighs 😂 might be helpful for you too? But maybe yours it's more structural?

Clementineorsatsuma · 22/04/2023 18:55

Made it to10.5km today so halfway to my half! Need to lose some weight to speed up but also knocked 30 secs per km off too!
