Starting couch to 5K tomorrow morning - anyone want to join?

After faffing about and putting it off for ages I’ve decided I’m starting couch to 5K tomorrow morning.

I find myself 2 years since my daughter was born, about 4 stone overweight and out of breath when I run up the stairs so desperately need to do something to increase my fitness.

Has anyone started the couch to 5K? How did you find it? Anyone fancy joining?

Well done @bailarbailar ! I find running along the seafront where I live can be too blustery and there's nearly always a headwind, shame as it really is beautiful!

Fiddledeedeeee · 10/04/2023 15:31

W6R3 completed this morning 🥳
I’m so pleased and still amazed at how well the programme works!

bailarbailar · 12/04/2023 12:39

W7R1 just now i. The strong wind and rain. Of course the literal second I stopped running the sun came out!! I am totally soaked and weather beaten ha
Found this one much harder but assume it's cos of the conditions and also I prefer going in the morning when I have more energy - am already knackered from work by lunchtime. Still, another 25mins done, I covered 3.5Km apparently so defo won't do 5Km in 30mins

My gaps between runs have been getting too big, mostly due to the weather the last few weeks. Did w6r1 on Saturday but I struggled a little. I'm sure the two G&Ts I had earlier in the day didn't help either.

Hoping to do w6r2 today.

getagriplove · 17/04/2023 20:39

Big gaps here too, but did week 5 run 2 without too much fuss today! Debating whether to repeat on Wed or move to the scary 20 min run!

NyanBinaryJohn · 14/05/2023 22:13

Thought I'd try and resurrect this thread.

I haven't been for a run since around the last message on this thread. Went out today, continued with week 6 run 3 and managed to pace myself and do it, without c25k app help because my earbuds ran out of battery, and then the app paused. Luckily I had my watch to help me keep an eye on the time.

How is everyone else getting on?

sylv165 · 15/05/2023 09:36

Your message is quite timely @NyanBinaryJohn as I just restarted at the weekend. I got to the end of week 7 by mid-Feb, then had a slightly chaotic few months where we were getting work done to the house/went on holiday/everyone got ill/had other commitments, etc so I hadn't run since then. I went right back to week 2 and it was ok so going to skip to w3 today and see how that goes.

NyanBinaryJohn · 15/05/2023 10:35

It's amazing how much of the muscle memory and fitness you retain, even after a break. I started with week 3 after a 2 year break so I'm sure you'll be just fine with week 3! You might even find you can skip a few more.

sylv165 · 15/05/2023 11:06

Hopefully @NyanBinaryJohn, it definitely felt easier than I expected. I thik I'll do at least 2 runs from w3 and then maybe skip to w4. Don't want to rush back to quickly and put myself off!

NyanBinaryJohn · 16/05/2023 18:36

That's what I thought, that you might be able to skip a run a week and then essentially compress 3 weeks in to 2 sort of thing.

I completed wk7 r1 today, at pretty much the same pace as wk6 r3 (also 25 min run). Felt like I could have continued on but decided to follow the programme for now. I think I'll do another wk7 run before jumping to wk8 with 28 min runs. With the warm up/cool down walks either side I seem to be covering around 4.3km in 35 mins. The 5k is getting ever closer!

helpfulperson · 16/05/2023 19:15

Just due to circumstances I've not been able to keep up regularly running, sometimes I'm only getting out once a week so I'm doing 1 minute run,
1 minute walk for as long as I've got. I've been managing 15 repetitions mostly but even if I just run from the door and do 5 or 6 it feels good.

And my average speed is 10min/km!

sylv165 · 16/05/2023 22:14

I’m taking it slow and steady too @helpfulperson. I just want to get back running again first, speed can come later.

I managed w3r2 today and it was fine. Think I will skip to w4r1 on Thursday and see how I get on

NyanBinaryJohn · 19/05/2023 16:30

Wk7 r2 today and I decided to continue running until I'd covered 4km by running. Managed to do it by running for 30 mins. Including the warm up and cool down walks I covered 5km in 39:52, which I am very happy with. I think I'll be ditching the app now and building up my running distance now using my watch.

sylv165 · 19/05/2023 19:45

That’s great @NyanBinaryJohn! I was due to do the last w3 run yesterday, but instead I decided to a kind of in between run with 4 x 4 min runs with 2 min walks between. Took it slow and it felt good, so on to W4 tomorrow

NyanBinaryJohn · 22/05/2023 09:16

@sylv165 See, you get to know your own ability and make small adjustments for it. I did it by adding distance to my week 7 runs meaning that I skipped week 8 (28 min runs) entirely in favour of week 9, which I did yesterday evening and went well.

I'm now working on improving my distance slowly but surely from 4K of running to 5K. My watch defaults to 1km splits but I manually put in a split after my 5 min warm up (0.5k) and it's shown me my running speed sits around 7:30/km. I'm really quite happy with that given I'm 1-2 stone overweight.
