Starting couch to 5K tomorrow morning - anyone want to join?

After faffing about and putting it off for ages I’ve decided I’m starting couch to 5K tomorrow morning.

I find myself 2 years since my daughter was born, about 4 stone overweight and out of breath when I run up the stairs so desperately need to do something to increase my fitness.

Has anyone started the couch to 5K? How did you find it? Anyone fancy joining?

Whoop I just did 6k at a nice steady 7min15 pace stoped for a couple of lunges & squats to release my sore legs but pleased I upped the distance this morning. I’m going to start another thread for those who fancy hoping over to continue post 5k running if you want to join me?

That would be great!

I did 6.5k at the weekend, was a little slower than usual but average pace was 7’16 so was quite pleased.

Thanks @AnnaBlush!
Just did the dreaded W5R3! Back started to ache at the end but felt fine otherwise!
Think the sun helped a lot!! Also managed to avoid the giant hill this time ha ha
Roll on W6
Keep going everyone!

Nice to see everyone still here!

I did week 5 run 2 on Sat 25th, went away on a business trip, got ill with a 24hr stomach bug. Despite that I felt fit today and decided to try run 3. After 5 mins I slowed down a bit, but by the time she gave me the 15 min call I felt great and sped up again. An old injury did crop up slightly, but if anything that's simply a reminder to buy a new insole.

So very pleased I managed to complete this run.

You've really sped up @Passportpondery!

@Winter645Mermaid I will join you when I graduate, I'm getting so close!
Did W7D1 this evening, 25 minutes without stopping. I really am amazed by the programme, to think that I couldn't even run for more then 90 seconds at the start, it's incredible.

I normally go out first thing in the morning but my kids are on their Easter holidays so I headed out after they were in bed instead. Running on a tummy full of beans, salsa, guacamole, cheese, rice and sour cream is not the most pleasant and I reckon it slowed me down a fair bit- my pace was the slowest yet at 7'49"/km.

Anyone else using a ridiculous amount of technology on their runs? Tonight I was using:
Spotify
C25K app
Strava for the run only
Myzone heart rate strap and app

😂

Spirini · 03/04/2023 22:21

@bailarbailar hills are bastards, I live at the top of a steep hill and always walk it in my cool-down. I can't imagine ever being able to run up it, maybe some day!

The aches and pains are annoying aren't they? I always have a twinge somewhere but running through them often seems to help.

@Winter645Mermaid I use a TENS to relax tight muscles, I find outside of the tops of my thighs and lower back is where I need it most. Might be helpful between massages?

Yes! it’s always a dilemma as I leave the house about what to start first 😂

NyanBinaryJohn · 04/04/2023 15:53

For those of you running with lots of tech: why not get a running watch (Fitbit, Garmin, etc) and sync everything? I use a Garmin so I simply start C25K on my phone (and music for when I choose to run to music). The 20-40 second intro is then enough to put my phone away and start my run on my watch when she says "let's go". My Garmin is linked to Strava, so there is no need to run that separately.

Once I complete the run I stop my watch, and once my phone and watch sync the rest happens automatically.

Saves a lot of faff!

Haggisfish3 · 04/04/2023 16:06

I’m about to buy an Apple Watch for this reason!

Passportpondery · 04/04/2023 17:12

I use an Apple Watch and record through Apple fitness. I then import my run into Strava as I prefer their statistics. Why Apple still can’t calculate and save your fastest 5k really annoys me!

Spirini · 04/04/2023 21:59

I don't think I'd get an Apple Watch, can't really justify the cost for something I'd only wear while running a few times a week. I have a regular jewellery analogue watch that I wear the rest of the time.

I'll check out Garmin etc, I don't want anything huge though as I've tiny wrists. The only Garmins I've seen were massive....

NyanBinaryJohn · 04/04/2023 23:09

Garmin Forerunner 55 is generally the entry level for running (the others are just glorified step counters without GPS). I have the Vivoactive 4s because it's my day to day watch.

Before that I had the Fitbit charge 2 HR. That didn't have GPS, but I've just looked at the current version (the 5) and that does come with GPS.

bailarbailar · 05/04/2023 08:50

W6R1 for me just now. Found it v hard, went out too fast I think. There was a man quote far ahead of me on the path who was smoking and very breath I took I had lungfuls of smoke so I sped up to go past him but it took a while so by 2.5 mins I was already knackered!
Still, completed it so that's great 😃
Well done on everyone's progress, hoping to join you on the 5 to 10Km threat at some point

Spirini · 05/04/2023 13:03

@bailarbailar oh that'd really bother me too. You can even smell it from cars that pass as well, god love their lungs. And don't get me going on the smelly diesels!

I've been way off, WAY OFF on estimating my pace. I've been using a C25K app (not the nhs one) that calculates pace but it seems to have been totally overestimating it. According to Strava my pace is 6.54km/h 🐢.

getagriplove · 05/04/2023 18:44

Did wk 5 run one today. Been missing a few runs/weeks as couldn't quite face starting right from the beginning! All gone well so far, though I'm not I'm ready for 8 mins on Friday so I may repeat today!

Feels so good to know I'm only a few weeks from running 5ks and parkrun again!

NyanBinaryJohn · 06/04/2023 07:29

@Spirini ^6.54km/h^

That's not slow! I did my 20 min run (I'm tall, used to run) at 8:05. Your speed is where I was when I ran more regular 5k runs a few years ago!

Spirini · 06/04/2023 09:05

Thanks @NyanBinaryJohn good to know! I'm 5'0 so my little legs will probably never do a 5k in 30 minutes

@getagriplove 8 minutes feels so long when you haven't been at it in a while, best of luck!

UnoQueenie · 06/04/2023 19:59

I did week 5 run 2 today!! So proud of myself but more than a bit scared of the 20 min run coming up!!

Haggisfish3 · 07/04/2023 11:48

I was terrified of that one, too and kept putting it off!! I did it in the end though. Keep going and just believe in yourself. I bet you wouldn’t have thought you could run for ten minutes when you started.

bailarbailar · 07/04/2023 11:49

Well done @UnoQueenie I was worried too but so happy when I completed it!
W6R2 for me today, on holiday on the south coast in the beautiful sunshine!! Absolutely lovely but definitely need some shorts ha ha
Makes such a difference looking at beautiful scenery instead of the local streets in the rain or snow

UnoQueenie · 07/04/2023 12:14

Do you all ever get foot pain? My left foot hurts all along the outer edge today. I wear good running trainers so not sure what rise I can do??

Haggisfish3 · 07/04/2023 13:54

You could go to a specialist sports shoe shop with a gait analyser. You run on it and it tells you which shoes are best.

bailarbailar · 09/04/2023 12:34

W6R3 just now! Officially a runner according to the app lol 😂 running along the seafront is so much nicer and beautiful sunshine tho quite windy today. Also lots of people watching - I prefer going out when it's quiet but wasn't possible today.
I second a gait analysis, I found it really useful to help narrow down choice of shoes
