Welcome all to the 2022 distance challenge thread!

Any form of self-powered movement which you can log distance for; any distance in whatever units you like for your own personal challenge!

Last years thread:

Personally in previous years I've kept separate tallies for walking and rowing, and then added them at the end as they seem to me to be similar effort per km. But if I did swimming or cycling I'd keep those separate - 1km swimming is significantly harder than 1km walk, whereas 1km cycling would be easier.

Whatever makes sense to you, and your own personal challenge.Smile

Hello! I joined this thread last year but was rubbish at keeping up. Thank you for doing a 2022 edition @ErrolTheDragon
Despite not keeping a tally on the thread I did manage just over 1000km of running last year, but not the 1000 miles I was aimimg for. I've reset my strava goal to 1000 miles for this year, so let's see. Injury put paid to the distance goal last year and I'm still nervous my shin splints will resurface when I build up distance again.
But - I have two half marathons this spring to train for. I have also started walking more, and recording my walks as WFH makes me so sedentary, especially over the winter. I try to complete the strava 50k a month walking challenge.
So far this year:
Run 3.1 miles ( new year Park run)
Walk 3 miles

ErrolTheDragon · 02/01/2022 23:15

Glad to have you back. Let's hope for no injuries this year!

Helloooo everyone!!!

I was short of my target last year due to covid at the end of the year but that said, I'm going to aim higher this year Grin

I'm going for 10,000km split between swimming, cycling and running.

Should be doable, given that I'm training for an Ironman Confused !!

44Seahorses · 02/01/2022 23:43

Hello, I'd like to join please! I'd like to do 1000 miles on foot, running (mostly) or walking. I did my first marathon last year and really want to do an ultra this year.

So far I've done a 7.5 mile run and 3.1 mile walk.

Zampa · 03/01/2022 11:00

I've gone from zero to 100 mph and think I may have overdone it! I couldn't manage much in today's exercise class so I think I might dial it back a bit.

Back to walking the school run tomorrow so think I'll stick to that for a day or two.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/01/2022 11:24

That can happen, Zampa!Grin I used to do Jillian Michaels, for a few days when I first started my legs were so stiff I wished I lived in a bungalow! Don't worry, whatever doesn't kill you literally does make you stronger when it comes to exercise (so long as you're not actually injuring yourself of course).

Nowadays (I've just turned 61) I mostly just walk plus Pilates. Really I should try to do more for my upper body.

A nice 9.3km by the big river in town today. It has a large pair of parks on one side, and a local nature reserve on the other.

27.1 km walked

Tarahumara · 03/01/2022 16:13

After a rather muddy run yesterday I chose to stay inside today - 13.0km on the stationery bike.
Total: 28.5km (7km run, 21.5km bike)

rrhuth · 03/01/2022 17:27

Another 4 miles today.

Wondering if I should record in KM as most of you do it that way (feeling oldfashioned!)

rrhuth · 03/01/2022 17:28

Sorry - so total so far 11 miles/17.7km

Slobberstops · 03/01/2022 17:38

I have done no miles so far but we have a new puppy so it’s a bit like having a baby. I think I will go for 1000km but am expecting a slow start. Yawn.

Whatever suits you - if you're measuring in miles, maybe record that and if you want convert occasionally?

I like km because they rack up quicker, and it's what my Apple Watch was set to by default.Grin

It's a lot like having a baby, but for a shorter time. Hopefully before too long the pup will be acting as your personal trainer. What breed? (And can we have a photo?)

It’s a springer so in the longer term a great partner. Will find a pic! He is cute:)

Jumbojem · 03/01/2022 18:54

First 10k run of the year today, hanging on the coat tails of my 12 and 14 year olds. Just can't keep up these days, even though the younger one did XC event yesterday and said his legs were dead. Oh to be young!
9.3/1000 miles run
3/373 miles walked (aiming for 50k/32 miles a month)

Tarahumara · 03/01/2022 18:56

Feeling your pain Jumbojem, I also have pre teen / teens who are faster than me!

VioletWillow · 03/01/2022 19:00

Oh this looks wonderful, I would love to join. I'm getting back to running again slowly, I cycle, walk and use the rowing machine.
Today I got in 2.5K walking, 5K on the rowing machine and just over 3K on the bike.

RainingYetAgain · 03/01/2022 19:04

Hi,
I failed miserably last year, damaged ankle in February, so long lay off, then got an insect bite on the inner thigh which turned nastly( and made walking painful) and then lost motivation as it was too wet, too muddy, too windy...... So, I did 850Km instead of 1200Km. I have some new walking boots, so I'm definately going to do it this year.
As well as that, I went on a 1-1 cycling confidence building session offered by the local Council, so I am aiming to get going on the bike as well. I did really well on the training then fell off the first time I went out with DH! My fleece got caught on the back of my saddle and I ended up in a ditch. We were pulling in on a narrow country road to let a car pass in the opposite direction, so the driver ended up stopping to make sure I was OK. So embarrassing .

TabithaTittlemouse · 03/01/2022 19:09

Can I join please?
I don’t think I’ll clock up as many miles as most here but need encouragement to move more.

So far I’ve walked 16.4 km

I am doing c25k and yoga with Adrienne too but it’s my walking that I want to increase.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/01/2022 19:24

More welcomes! That's a great start, Tabitha. And as I said somewhere upthread, it's not a competition. Some of us have more time available than others, for one thing.

18K steps yesterday but only 10K so far today for me. Back to work tomorrow but I'll try to fit in a 30 minute run/ walk mainly walk beforehand.

Updated my Walk 1000 Miles profile earlier and noticed that someone has already completed it Shock Shock seriously though, this was at lunch time today, how can someone already have done 1000 miles in (presumably) 2.5 days? And why would you even bother joining, it's not like it'd be a challenge for you?!

Looking forward to a pup photo @Slobberstops Smile

Justmeandmines · 03/01/2022 23:09

I was on last years thread for a while but wasn't great a remembering to update. Last years goal was to walk, run or cycle 2021km. I got to about 1500km then gave up tracking. So will be aiming for 2022km this year.
3km ran
14km walked
17/2022km

ErrolTheDragon · 03/01/2022 23:23

how can someone already have done 1000 miles in (presumably) 2.5 days?

They can't have, not walking or even running. 2.5 days is 60 hours. To travel 1000 miles in 60 hours would require a continuous average pace of 16.66 mph.
A four minute mile is 15mph. The fastest marathon runner is a bit under 13mph on average.
