I’ve done this before but due to getting covid and an injury, I’m having another go to get back into running. Just done my first run (I thought week 4 might be roughly the right place to start) and remembered why I both love and hate running!

Anyone else interested in some motivational chat? I’m guessing lots might start in Jan but I’m trying to get ahead of the game!

Very well done, everyone

Mumofrowers · 08/01/2022 22:39

Hello all would love to join you.

I did C25K about a year ago (it really does work - I had never run before in my whole life and I’m in my 50s) and kept running 5K 3 times per week throughout the year (I wasn’t one of the mad keen people who started running 10k!). I stopped just over a month ago to have necessary surgery (not related to running) - recovery is taking longer than I thought. I couldn’t do anything for the first 3 weeks but have been doing some long walks in the last week or so. I’d like to get back to running now but know I couldn’t run consistently for long. I think C25k might be a good way to get back into it but am not sure which week to start in. Maybe week 4? Any suggestions welcome.

Lostinafield · 09/01/2022 07:18

@Mumofrowers I'm no expert but would suggest as you've been recovering from an operation, starting right back at the beginning might be best?

WeAllLikeVindaloo · 09/01/2022 07:41

Hi can I join in on this one?
I started to do c25k a couple of years ago after a long break from running but then fell pregnant and sort of thought what’s the point 😂
I’ve decided this is the year I take up running again, it does my mental health the world of good and gets me out the house without a child in tow Wink
I did my first run on the 1/1/22
Then ran again on the 4th & 6th so completed my first week.
Will be out again this evening for w2 r1!

Be nice to be on a thread where we can egg each other on! Well done everyone x

Hi, welcome!

I did W2R1 yesterday, when I can get up the energy to get dressed I'll do the next one this morning!

WeAllLikeVindaloo · 09/01/2022 08:26

@Hereforthedramaz well done! You’re smashing it!

I must admit I looked like a total cliché running first thing on New Year’s Day. Currently listening to Sanjeev, he has nice voice.
On my days off I’m either out walking for an hour with the DC or hula hooping which is nice to do in front of the telly.

Thank you!
You just gave me the push to get off the sofa and I'm now back from W2R2!

Bit icy out but lovely and crisp morning for a run.

ParishSpinster · 09/01/2022 15:26

I nearly talked myself out of it, but I did W5R1 today.
Definitely recovering more quickly which is .among me happy as I was worried that Covid in November would stop me from running again.

Well done everyone on starting this and keeping on track!

pickingdaisies · 10/01/2022 10:01

@Mumofrowers start with week 1 for the first run. If that's not enough of a challenge, make the second run a week 2 run, the third a week 3 run, then do all three of the week 4 runs. Better to start too easy than push too hard.

WeAllLikeVindaloo · 10/01/2022 10:39

So I never managed to get out last night for w2r1 because both of my children decided they was going to protest going to bed despite being out at the park all afternoon in order to tire them out Hmm so by the time me and DP got them to sleep it was too late. I don’t feel too comfortable running in the dark after a certain time.
So this morning I braved it, but with the buggy in tow, managed to do it, but ended up with a flat tyre on the buggy BlushGrin but I did it nevertheless! Keep going, we’ve got this.

Whooo well done!

With the buggy that must be like resistance training, good for you!

Hey all! May I join in?
Having been very unwell during last year, I have really committed to myself that I will do something about my fitness levels this year.
Today I did my first C25K run and am feeling tired but proud of myself for getting off my arse.
I have also discovered two things that have revolutionised things. 1) is the Zombie Run 5k. So much more fun for me than the standard C25K and 2) is a boob band. I have big boobs and despite the best and most expensive sports bras in the past, they’ve always still moved uncomfortably. A boob band is so ridiculously simple but really locks them down and the difference to my comfort is epic. I can actually breath when running in a way I’ve never been able to (despite being in my worst shape ever). It feels life changing right now.

Also, I’ve discovered that cheesy pop music like steps really helps too!!!!

WeAllLikeVindaloo · 10/01/2022 20:01

Welcome @SantaHat
Well done for doing the first one, gets easier each time you go honest, that’s what I’ve found anyway!

Will have to take a look at boob bands, I struggle with mine. Although I have found the best sports bra I’ve ever tried and it didn’t cost the earth either! It’s like a normal bra so no mono boob business!

Lostinafield · 11/01/2022 06:53

I still haven't started because of plantar fasciitis.
But yesterday I met with an OT support worker and an OT from mental health services to set up a care and treatment plan for thirty years of eating disorder. It feels very emotional and I just wanted to tell someone. One of my goals is that by dealing with this I may lose.some weight and be able to run again.

SantaHat · 11/01/2022 11:12

Thanks @WeAllLikeVindaloo and do check out boob bands. I feel like this has revolutionised my exercise options!

And @Lostinafield that is amazing progress, well done! Totally understandable that you’re emotional and we’re here if you want to talk.

Lostinafield · 11/01/2022 11:29

@SantaHat thank you
That's very kind. Currently feel very low but I expect that's part of the process of facing up to things

PurpleDaisies · 11/01/2022 11:33

This thread dropped off my active threads and it’s great to see so many doing really well. I did week five run one on Sunday. I’m planning run 2 later. Really not feeling like it but going to try to push through.

SantaHat · 11/01/2022 13:43

@Lostinafield sending you a very big un-MN hug. Change isn’t easy, it can be physically and emotionally draining and you’ve made a VERY big change and step forward. Be proud of yourself and know that you’re moving in the right direction.

SantaHat · 11/01/2022 13:44

And @PurpleDaisies, here’s your moral support to say go and do that second run. You got this.

Lostinafield · 11/01/2022 14:03

@SantaHat thank you x
And @PurpleDaisies good luck with run2!

Mumofrowers · 11/01/2022 15:09

@Lostinafield welcome and well done for deciding to make healthy changes. Making that decision is hard so best of luck with getting started on your plan.

On Sunday I decided to see how my running was as I had no idea how much fitness I’d lost (just knew it was quite a lot) so I just ran and walked a bit without a plan to get a sense of where I might be. That was helpful but now I need a plan so I can see improvements. So this morning I did a run similar to W4R1 - although it was not in the same order as I changed it to fit in better with the hills on my route (ie more running down and walking up Grin). It was tough and I wanted it to end but not totally exhausting so I think I’ll try W4R2 (in the correct order Wink) later in the week. If that’s too much, I’ll drop back a bit.

FreeFrenchHens · 11/01/2022 16:42

wow @Lostinafield what a huge step, well done.

I have been a bit off my running but pleased I managed to go today.

I favour the immortal words of 5ive (because that's just how cool my running playlist is!) "I know it's not much, but it's ok, keep on moving on anyway".

Lostinafield · 11/01/2022 18:35

@Mumofrowers and @FreeFrenchHens thank you both. I have been trying to get help for years but it wasn't available where I live.
Well done both of you on your runs today.
I ordered the boob band recommended above, for when I start running. The reviews are excellent
