Everyone is welcome here.

I think that’s it @pearlsthatwerent. I’ve been doing 2km in 50 minutes all summer, so it feels like I need to improve from there.
Maybe I should just stick with what I enjoy.
Your lake swimming sounds epic @BogRollBOGOF.

Can I join in?!

I'm morbidly obese and need to exercise. I love swimming but have struggled to find time, but now with my little one starting reception class and me WFH, I can easily manage 3 or 4 days a week. Just signing up for my membership now. Did 30 x 25m yesterday in 30 mins. Gunna try to 40 in 40 today and then focus on doing that 3 or 4 times a week til I'm in a habit.

Great stuff!

The beauty with swimming is that it's one of those things that once you know how to do it, the technique comes back very easily.
I was 16 when I learned and did my first mile just under a year after my first length. I've had long gaps in swimming over the years, but it always comes back.

Been back at the lake again. Lovely day for it, about 15-16⁰C air temperature. Water was cooler. It's a bit like a recovery icebath Grin With lots of warm gear, I'm managing 45 mins still. There's lots of capacity there... I had trouble booking, phoned up and the guy said to just head down. I started off on my own but while I was going around, a couple of brave ladies turned up to do a lap in skins.

I've always swam but most I ever do is about twice a week and I usually stick to swimming pools (although outdoor pools / lidos are my favourite).
Have COVID at the moment so won't be swimming for a couple of weeks at least but hoping to get back to it once im better .

TheOrigRights · 08/04/2022 15:23

Hellooooooo, can we resurrect this thread. I miss my people!

Everyone's welcome.

I'm currently managing only one swim a week at the pool (my usual 25 mins 1k). I really need to go twice to get the benefit.

I am doing a spot of OWS tomorrow. A group of kindred spirits have formed a very informal group where we meet at one member's garden. She owns part of the river, so we plop in, waft down the river, climb out using the rope she's installed and repeat (depending on how feckin' cold it is!).

Hullo! maybe we can take turns bumping thread every other day?

Of the regulars i used to see at my pool, 2 years ago, never mind 5-6 years ago, there are rather few remaining. people don't move away much in our age bracket/region. the swim habit obviously comes & goes.

Hello everone!

@TheOrigRights That looks absolutely beautiful - so tranquil. Not sure I'm quite hardy enough for wild swimming at these temperatures, but I have huge admiration for those who are.

I stopped swimming for three or four months following a dose of Covid, but back at it since February; I'd forgotten how annoying it is swimming in the school holidays, but I know if I stop even for a week I'll let it slide again.

I tried lessons to learn front crawl but not confident enough to practice in a busy pool, so sticking to usual plod. Now concentrating on length / duration more than speed; I try to do 2K in under an hour, which I mostly manage unless irritated out of the pool early.

Had swimmers ear a few months ago, had to have two lots of antibiotics to clear it up. Dr advised to ear plugs for swimming which i have done, i now have tinnitus but no pain. 2 year waitlist for the ENT consultant shock Dr cant give me a straight answer or any advice whether i should continue to swim now i have tinnitus (i really, really want to continue swimming but i am already completely deaf in one ear from a childhood illness and now have tinnitus in the other ear so I am being extra cautious, but I love to swim)

lljkk · 13/04/2022 08:36

That's just showing off... 1800m in pool for me this morning. Now trying not to eat everything in house.

MinnieMountain · 18/04/2022 15:04

That’s stunning.

Our lido has opened early again and they’ve started 7am swims 4 times a week. It’s so peaceful, even with the music (which actually helps). I’m aiming for 3 times a week. Decided not to persist in learning front crawl as I wasn’t enjoying it.

Hello @clpsmum

Everyone's welcome.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi everyone. I go swimming for 45 mins mon - fri when kids are away to school. Hoping it helps with weight loss. Noticed it helps with my mental health too. Glad to get back today now kids back after Easter

TheOrigRights · 19/04/2022 11:18

That's a great routine clpsmum
I am sure it will help with weight loss because aside from the obvious calorie burn, you'll have more energy and feel better about yourself, which I think helps in general with eating better.

I try and swim twice a week (I do other sport as well), and do 1K each time.

MinnieMountain · 28/04/2022 07:01

How’s everyone doing?
I wimped out of the 7am lido swim yesterday, so I’ll only go twice this week.

NCTDN · 01/05/2022 14:44

Can I join this? Just got a gym membership so I can get fit but really it's just the pool I want to use.
I'm looking for a couch to 5k equivalent for indoor swimming. I've found the OSS one but that's too hard even if I changed it for indoor. Any suggestions?

I'm afraid I can't help with a swim plan - I just kept swimming and got better.
I imagine it's all about mixing it up, being consistent and not going too mad in the early days when you're super keen, only to crash when life/mojo gets in the way.

MinnieMountain · 04/05/2022 07:38

@NCTDN I set myself a goal (2km) then just upped it by 50 metres every week, swimming twice a week. To start with I repeated the odd week and didn’t get annoyed with myself about it. By the end I was going up by more each week but it was a good benchmark.

Can we restart this thread?

Gingerwarthog · 16/02/2023 08:45

Hi All
I was a lurker on this thread for a while. Can we resurrect it?
There were so many great tips and support for swimmers.

TheOrigRights · 16/02/2023 09:15

Hi @Gingerwarthog YES!

What sort of swimming do you do at the moment?

OP posts:
Gingerwarthog · 16/02/2023 09:21

Hi!
I am a masters swimmer at my local club. I train at least three times weekly in my pool usually 4.
My longer training sessions are 90 minutes (3km in training sessions and drills) and I can swim 1.6km in around 32 mins - not super fast but Ok?
Sea swam last year all Summer through to October then stopped and want to do more this year - and swim through Winter.
Looking to do some open water swimming events this year also.
Biggest issue atm is my goggles- my beloved old Speedos have started to leak and leave owl face marks.
How about you?

Gingerwarthog · 16/02/2023 09:23

Ha ha - my pool is my local 50 m pool!
I don't have one in the back garden or anything!
