WFH Mums - how many steps do you get a day?

Just wondering how many steps you get a day when you are working from home? Really struggling to get them in. I’m very unfit also

My watch tells me I averaged 12,500 a day last week.

EmmaStone · 15/03/2021 15:31

If I'm not going for a specific walk or a run, it can be less than 5k, although that's unusual. It's not unusual to have less than 10k on a working day though. I don't really pay much attention to my steps though, I don't think it particularly demonstrates anything about fitness - I could do 5k steps in a day, but I could then do a spin class in the evening - my heartrate is getting elevated, I'm working out, just not via steps. Equally, I can pootle around town and the shops (in normal times), and easily walk 10k+ steps, but not have broken a sweat.

I'm a slave to my Apple Watch instead - active minutes and calorie goals (ie where heart rate is raised), and I try to do some kind of workout (even if just a brisk walk) every day.

ememem84 · 15/03/2021 15:31

today so far 6793. i would expect by bedtime for this to go up to around 10,000. give or take.

i did go for a run their morning though for 40 minutes.

frutyloops · 15/03/2021 15:32

2655 so far 😫

Turnedouttoes · 15/03/2021 15:37

Mine used to be basically zero. However, in the last couple of weeks I’ve started calorie counting and doing an hour long lunchtime walk. On days that I achieve my walk it’s about 10,000 but on days like today where I’ve spent my whole lunch hour in the post office queue, it’s more like 3,500 which is pretty poor

changingnames786 · 15/03/2021 15:47

8000-12000

I go for a walk at lunch, and sometimes evenings, if I don't do that I'm lucky to get to 5,000. School isn't in walking distance anymore sadly.

NiceGerbil · 15/03/2021 15:59

Sod all

I used to get 8000+ just from going to the office. And carrying a bag with a laptop in and with a nasty hill.

Now- zilch.

I really need to get back to the office this lifestyle doesn't suit me at all. I've been depressed since it started which doesn't help obviously.

SpamIAm · 15/03/2021 16:08

Probably about 3.

SpamIAm · 15/03/2021 16:09

Just checked on my phone and looks like about 500 on average. Although that's likely an overestimate because my phone is in my pocket when I rock my son to sleep at night.

PlugUgly1980 · 15/03/2021 19:16

22,000 so far today...that's a 10k run very early this morning, a walk during my lunch break and then a mile to school and back for pick up. I don't run every day (usually 5 times a week and some times shorter runs).

Pre lock down on my WFH day if I didn't go for a run, I'd barely do 3,000 as I often took the car to pick the kids up and didn't make much effort to go out at lunch time.

I've worked really hard over the past 12 months to get the steps in and make the most of my lunch break too.

Stroller15 · 15/03/2021 19:19

Also basically nothing. I hate being so sedentary but also don't feel like going for another walk. I really need to increase drastically

Twickerhun · 15/03/2021 19:22

About 3,000 unless I make an effort to go for some ever side but it hard to find the time at the moment with busy work and two small children. When I make an effort I can do 10000 in a day but I have to prioritise that over housework and sorting family stuff. I really can’t do it all is the conclusion I’ve come to.

Twickerhun · 15/03/2021 19:22

Ever side? Exercise

Fortyfifty · 15/03/2021 19:23

Want there some research that came out that said it was better to go for a fast walk and be put off breath for 10 minutes each day than it was to admire to a set amount of steps. Obviously doing lots of steps And being out of breath is optimum but if you can only managed one, better to make sure it's a short power walk.

CMOTDibbler · 15/03/2021 19:25

I usually get over 10k. But I take my dogs on a very fast walk every lunchtime, and try and cover 4-5km then, plus an after work walk. The lunchtime walk is in my work calendar as I need the daylight and exercise to feel good

trilbydoll · 15/03/2021 19:28

2k if that at home. I've been at work today and I've done 9k. It makes so much difference walking to the kitchen/toilet/picking up the paper delivery from downstairs/looking for someone I want to talk to.

lljkk · 15/03/2021 19:28

Fitbit says 19k/day in last 10 days. Range 11.5-26.5k.

Jenjenn · 15/03/2021 19:29

14,000 mainly thanks to 2 school runs on foot. I leave the house 30 min early for collection time and speedwalk up and down a steep hill before heading for the school. Sometimes I go home the long way after drop off adding an extra 10 minute walk. Short walk after dinner too but none of these things eat too much into my day. I wfh pt.

BusySittingDown · 15/03/2021 19:29

Almost 17,000 today.

Did a HIIT session early am, walked DD to school, went for a walk during a work break, walked to pick DD up from school and then another walk round the block after work.

Usually hit around 11,000. Luckily I don't really take phone calls so I'm not tied to my desk when I'm working. I need to get up and walk around every so often otherwise I feel stiff.

saffire · 15/03/2021 19:32

@fellrunner85

My watch tells me I averaged 12,500 a day last week.
How??? I'm not nearly doing enough but I just don't know how I can fit more in!
tinkerbellvspredator · 15/03/2021 19:36

10,000 steps is a "myth" as a result of marketing.
Here's an article on a study which gives some useful info

fellrunner85 · 15/03/2021 19:37

Lots of running, @saffire! Mainly early mornings before school, but a long run on the weekend too. Otherwise I barely get any steps in, with just the school run and a short walk with the kids each day.

noodlmcdoodl · 16/03/2021 15:13

Between 1,000 and 3,000 🙈 but I get 2-4 hours in on my turbo trainer tho.

SavingsQuestions · 16/03/2021 15:18

If I'm really working hard at it 5-6000 ... unfortunately often less. I am in awe at those who are managing fit more in.

Work at the computer all day and kids home in the evening!

SmednotaSmoo · 16/03/2021 18:54

If I don’t do the school run, can be less than 1000. I often go out for a walk about 8pm and can be out for over an hour which gets it up a bit.
