@tizwozliz I completely relate to not quite enjoying running enough to do it without a target or goal. I don't want to run for much longer than I currently do because it gets hard to fit it in to work/family life. So I'm focusing on speed rather than distance. I don't know if that's a good strategy or not.

Thanks @fellrunner85. I was so bloody pleased (and surprised). I think it was when I realised that I'd done the 2nd km in less than 6mins that I really picked up the pace. Mentally what had seemed impossible suddenly seemed totally achievable. I really speeded up on the last km because I could see that 5km in under 30mins was within reach and I knew how annoyed I'd be if I slowed down just because I was getting a bit tired. I worry about getting out of puff or getting a stitch if I run too fast so I think that holds me back a bit at the beginning.

In other good news, I've just booked a gait analysis at a proper running shop next week. I'm hoping to treat myself to some new trainers.

Shopgirl1 · 06/04/2021 17:43

I did W6 R2 this morning. Found it pretty tough for some reason, harder than the 20 minutes at the end of W5 in a way.
Hoping to do W6 R3 on Thursday and nervous already!

BIWI · 06/04/2021 17:56

That's me tomorrow @Shopgirl1! Not looking forward to it.

Mummyoply · 06/04/2021 22:11

I completed W1R3 today, looking forward to starting week 2 on Thursday 🏃‍♀️

Shopgirl1 · 06/04/2021 22:49

Good luck @BIWI, just think of the sense of achievement afterwards.

Shopgirl1 · 06/04/2021 22:50

Well done @Mummyoply!

BIWI · 07/04/2021 15:09

W6R3 done!

It was hard, mainly because it was so cold and the wind was cutting.

And I managed to get confused about the timings. On the app I use, the 'narrator' tells you when each 5 minutes has passed. In my head I'd already done 20 minutes and was waiting for her to say the final 'well done, just a minute to go!' - but actually I still had another 5 minutes to go Grin

Then at the last minute, I ran past a little girl, probably about 3 years old, who looked at me, smiled, and then started running with me. That really made me pick up my pace - I wasn't going to be beaten by a small child Grin

Feel good about the achievement, but I can definitely tell I've been doing some hard/heavy breathing, and that my lungs have had a good work out. Knees feel fine so far

Start week 7 on Saturday.

back from a surprisingly fast 5k.
surprising because one length of the sportpark it felt like running on the spot due to the gusts of wind.

Well done biwi & red

It's freezing out there! Another 5k PB for me, 30m40. Getting there. @fellrunner85 I had your words ringing in my ears all the way roar! Grin

Cavagirl · 07/04/2021 19:16

Oops round not roar. Although roar would also have worked!

BobVance · 07/04/2021 19:31

Well done biwi red and cava lots of good running going on!

redcandlelight · 07/04/2021 19:39

thanks to fellrunner for the great speed tips. it really helps to have an outside view on running.

Hi all, late to the thread but I have just done w8r1, really annoyed with myself that I had to stop for approx 1 min in the middle of it so feel i can't move on to r2.
My times and speeds are so variable. I keep starting my Strava at the beginning of the warm up and stopping at the end so not sure my actual run distance but tonight I covered 5k for the first time including the warm up/down. My pace is 8.22km/h which I have no idea if it is reasonable enough. I know I couldn't move any faster though without having to stop.

fellrunner85 · 07/04/2021 19:52

Oh I'm so glad you're finding the speed tips helpful!
It honestly doesnt seem two minutes since I was trying to break the 30min mark myself, and now I'm looking at hopefully breaking 20min in the autumn. So I'm only sharing the stuff that has worked for me, as a formerly-overweight, asthmatic mum of two - ie definitely not a pro runner!!

foodtoorder · 07/04/2021 19:55

That's really inspiring @fellrunner85, great to know there is hope. How long have you been running?

fellrunner85 · 07/04/2021 20:03

Around eight years, @foodtoorder, though with a big gap in the middle of that for pregnancy/childbirth/recovery and all that!

BIWI · 07/04/2021 20:07

Wow - 20 minutes is amazing @fellrunner85!

I'm not worrying about speed right now. I'm just focusing on doing the timed run without stopping. I know I'm a lot slower than the first time I did C25K - when I did manage to get down to 29.33. But that was 8 years ago, and I'm 61 now!

@redcandlelight how fast was your 5K?

redcandlelight · 07/04/2021 20:23

it was 6.05
so so very close.
I'm sure I will get there

Oooh can I join?! I did week3 run 1 today and ran for three minutes without stopping. Twice!! I was so chuffed. Great to read all the tips and hear from more experienced people.

foodtoorder · 07/04/2021 20:41

@Haggisfish it's a great feeling isn't it. 😁

Randommother · 07/04/2021 22:33

Well done everyone, it's great to read about all the runs and achievements - I find it really motivating. Thanks for the support and advice too. I gave myself a day off today, but I'm planning to redo w6 r1 in the morning, and I'll be taking all your tips and advice on board.

Talksunderwater · 07/04/2021 22:41

Welcome @foodtoorder and @Haggisfish and to those who had good runs today. I wasn’t planning to run today but had a tough morning at work so suddenly decided to go for a run at lunchtime to clear my head. I honestly couldn’t ever have imagined running to unwind mentally - but it really does help! Felt much better afterwards.

Haggisfish · 07/04/2021 23:47

@foodtoorder it does indeed feel marvellous. And hello @Talksunderwater!

Randommother · 08/04/2021 07:21

Welcome @Haggisfish!

@Talksunderwater, I couldn't imagine running to mentally unwind, maybe one day... intersting username by the way - is there a story behind it? (Are you a diver?)

Well I managed my second attempt at w6 r1. It wasn't easy, but it's done and that's the main thing.

redcandlelight · 08/04/2021 07:35

very good randommother
this is percieved to be the hardest one apart from starting.
the rest will hopefully be a doddle for you.

I feel a lot better after a run. less tense.
