I felt good about my run this morning. 25 minutes in and I could beat my 5 year old in a race, although I did make sure she'd had to do a bit of steady running first as sprints are much more marginal!

She leaves me for dead downhill on rough terrain, but then I have to work to beat my 2 year old as they both have a lower centre of gravity and no fear!

The main reason I need to get faster is to keep up with the 5yo at parkrun when it starts again. The fitness gains I've made mean I can take advantage of longer kegs rather better!

redcandlelight · 01/04/2021 13:34

interesting random does you 5yo do the whole 5k?

I was always taught that dc should not run more than 1km in one go per school year. until they are mid teens.

OP posts:
redcandlelight · 01/04/2021 13:42

my pre-teen started c25k with us, but when the playground reopened that was much more interesting...
my teens very ocassionally run with me. they have legs like giraffes are much faster than me, they politely slow down for me.

She has done the whole 5k in the past. Generally in fits and starts with stops to inspect interesting rocks etc. We usually did around 45-50 minutes and she got offered to stop at any lap point. She refused of course, but would always want to stop at the furthest point on the course from the car, so was expected to keep going back to the car. I need a decent reserve of pace if she decides she wants to go because she's quick if she wants to be.

Her longest walks (in hills) have been 10 miles and walked up Ben Lomond last summer, far less tired than either adult (we shared the big rucksack with 2 year old). So covering 5k at whatever pace she fancies isn't "tough" for her. I preferred quieter parkruns where there were laps (drop out options) but where the numbers were low or paths wide (or laps worked out right) - didn't want to be overtaken by the busy 25-28 minute pace bunch as she's not always good at running in a straight line...

I expect her to be capable of a "steady" 30 minute 5k in a couple of years because she's leggy and likes exercise - and if under exercised is rather "entertaining" to be around - lots of leaping off all the sofas. She does tennis and will do more non-running stuff once it all opens, but at the moment running (generally off road) is the way I can keep her interested.

DH takes the kids to run in the local skate park first thing while I do a steady run, so she does not do "distance" training with me.

Thanks to chasing her, 2 yo is getting quick too - he's already faster than my walking pace if he wants to go (ie not where or when I want him to!!!).

redcandlelight · 01/04/2021 14:07

wow, she sounds determined.
I know exactly what you mean with the behaviour being better when dc get plenty of exercise.

uk school and lack of pe and discouraging running on the playground had me shake my head sometimes. it's nuts.

I might remember rubbish with the 1km per school year, or advice has changed since I heard it (when oldest teen started school).

randomsabreuse · 01/04/2021 14:16

I think it's fair enough for a "race" effort limit but parkrun is for fun and she'll only be "racing" me!

KarmaViolet · 01/04/2021 15:10

DD (now 6.5) did a 5k with me when she was nearly 5 (because I'm an idiot and thought the children's run was 3k, it wasn't). It was an obstacle course so we had a 'break' every 500m to lob a ball at a tree or walk through mud. Grin She is another who needs scraping off the ceiling if under-exercised though so when I get good enough to need some speed training I'll take her out and chase her round 3k which she will regard as a gentle warm up and which will nearly kill me

According to this article the International Association of Athletics Federations say no more than 3k for children under 9, and no more than 3 times a week.

randomsabreuse · 01/04/2021 15:23

I'd like to see how many kms DC would do in a day at the park with friends. Certainly if I ever need to win a step challenge I know where my step counter will be going!!!

She generally does a mile walk (with random sprints and always running down the "wahoo steps"(plus dashing around the skate park) 4 mornings a week and 3 weeks out of 4 there will be a hilly walk, up for about 40 minutes, back down in 20, plus the 1 mile (for grown ups) park lap and maybe a longer hill walk the other day. Plus tennis and maybe a bike ride a week plus playing with neighbours. Crazy creature!

I'm hoping that learning the idea of a steady 2/3k (off road/varied terrain, jumping logs encouraged...) will improve patience and stamina.

I was hoping that I could run with younger DC in pushchair while she bikes but she got too quick too fast, it would be a tempo run to keep up nowadays and she's not even got gears!

redcandlelight · 01/04/2021 15:25

I think kids playing cover a whole lot of ground.
but more in a stop-start kind of way, not continuously running.

OP posts:
randomsabreuse · 01/04/2021 15:47

I've not seen her stop in the park, but it would not be steady pace "endurance" running, but varied pace and terrain, up some steps, balance on a fallen log, leap off and repeat type running. Repetitive tarmac running is not like playing, a hilly trail parkrun with no time pressure could well be (and more like hard work for me than a steady jog around the inner ring road of a racecourse!)

BobVance · 01/04/2021 17:54

Hi everyone. Sorry I’ve been MIA but been hectic at work. Managed to get out for W7R1 just now and had a great run! Lungs and legs seemed to just know what to do. I can’t imagine every run in W7 will feel the same but I’m pleased to have started well.

Well done to everyone on their runs and welcome orzo you’re in good company here Smile

Oneborneverydecade · 01/04/2021 21:15

Just back from wk5 rn 2 and stopped a couple of times during the 2nd 8 mins so I guess I'll be doing that one a couple more times!
Well done everyone on their successes today
@Randommother what trainers did you go for?

Brainygaga · 01/04/2021 21:32

Well done @Oneborneverydecade! It will come i'm sure. I'm doing Wk5 R2 tomorrow and i'll probably be in the same boat.....

WhereAreWeNow · 02/04/2021 12:04

Very impressed with people whose kids run with them. My DD (13) is not keen on physical activity. Getting her out for a walk is a struggle, let alone a run!

I did a 6k run this morning and really enjoyed it. It took me 37 mins and felt pretty steady.

I'm counting the days until running shops open so I can get a proper gait analysis and get new shoes.

redcandlelight · 02/04/2021 12:30

back from my lunchtime run.
did 4k and added intervalls during the 3rd km.
first time under 6m/k (just!)

OP posts:
redcandlelight · 02/04/2021 12:33

wrt running with children - the teens were very up to it.
the pre-teen not so much. they prefer to come with us on skates.

I think making running normal and fun is they key. don't force them but also don't let them gef away without exercise at all.

OP posts:
WhereAreWeNow · 02/04/2021 12:50

Well done getting under 6m/k @redcandlelight!

Talksunderwater · 02/04/2021 13:33

Wow, @redcandlelight that’s quick! I still plod along. I can’t seem to average below 7m/km and today ran 4.5km at an average of 7min15s per km. I take some consolation from the fact that my route is hilly and I can ran the flat and downhill bits in around 6min45s - but the uphill sections kill the average! I wouldn’t care except that my Fitbit tracks my run and automatically categorises it as a “walk” Blush

emilyjeff · 02/04/2021 13:49

Nice lazy start to the day and an easy pace 4 miles/ 6.5k this morning. Different route to normal and really enjoyed it. Wish I'd known ages ago that I should be running slower! Even the hills felt good and definitely felt I could've run further.
I too am wanting new running shoes, my right toe has rubbed right through the top of my current sauconys. Was looking at kids running shoes online as I only have small feet and obviously they're a fair bit cheaper. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy kids ones?

BIWI · 02/04/2021 13:52

Goodness I'm not even considering measuring my speed yet. I know it's very, very slow and ploddy!

Just back from W6R1 and I found it hard going today. Had to keep reminding myself that only a couple of days ago I'd run for 20 minutes without stopping.

But it's done.

I'm hoping that getting into longer runs will actually be easier, as it will give me a chance to get into my stride.

WhereAreWeNow · 02/04/2021 16:12

@emilyjeff I don't think there's any reason not to buy kids shoes if they're proper running shoes.

KarmaViolet · 02/04/2021 16:20

Just tried that strength training link posted above. I think doing that regularly might improve my speed!

KarmaViolet · 02/04/2021 16:21

@emilyjeff the only reason I don’t is that I’m heavier than I should be and my knees need the extra cushioning. If I was back to my fittest weight I would buy children’s shoes though!

emilyjeff · 02/04/2021 17:08

@BIWI I think I definitely got into my stride more on my long run today. Like my legs were just going without me thinking about it too much if that makes sense?
Thanks @where and @KarmaViolet I'm fairly lean so can't imagine weight would really be an issue. I think I will order a pair and see what I think when they arrive its free delivery so worth a try

Randommother · 03/04/2021 08:53

That's the dreaded w5 r3 in the bag! I very nearly didn't do it as yesterday I opened a door onto my foot which left my big toe in a bit of a mess, but do you know what - I didn't feel it at all during the run (smarts a bit now though). I've added a photo that I took when I'd finished, of the sunrays coming through the clouds. I took it at the point when I was feeling really proud of myself!

@Oneborneverydecade good luck with your week 5. For me the stopping / not stopping during a run has become far more psychological - sometimes it feels like I have a real battle of wills with myself to keep going! The new trainers were Brooks Adrenaline GTS. I have horrible wide feet, and they seemed to have good reviews.

@Shopgirl1 well done on your journey so far, that's a great weight loss! I really need to sort out my diet - any tips on quitting sugar as it's my biggest weakness?

Good luck everyone else with your runs this weekend Smile
