Hi everyone

I've started this thread as I couldn't add any more posts to the other one. Hopefully you all find this thread!!

Hope everyone had enjoyed their day - so bored at home right now I'm glad I have the run to look forward to. Waited till it got dark and I headed out with my new running buddy - my 11yo ds. Yes he ran ahead of me and stopped a few times so I could catch up, but we ran 4.46km in 33mins and I'm so proud of both of us! (And little dog of course who's my faithful running buddy). It was a bit drizzly tonight which was actually quite nice as it wasn't that cold so the rain cooled me off a bit.

I've been thinking of how I can improve my stride length and I wonder if I can use my rest days to do W1r1 and try to do it with much longer strides? Seeing my son running I realise how inefficient my stride is. If I can only learn to open my stride I could run much further in the same time. If I can walk tomorrow I might try that to see if I can.

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs today!

Thanks WellJuhnelle & Dobby!
It's bizarre isn't it, it's such an effort to get out there but once I'm out there I quite enjoy it and I'm so pleased to have done it. Why doesn't my brain connect that with getting up off my arse and putting my trainers on??
Dobby I think my plan will be to do week 9 for a bit - think that was schoolcook's advice - and see how feel, whether I'm happy doing that and trying to improve or whether I fancy trying to go a bit further.... I'm well aware that not having a plan may be a recipe for disaster with my poor discipline... what are you thinking?

Blobby10 · 06/02/2021 18:13

I went out for a 25 mile bike ride today- averaged 15.3 mph which I’m very pleased with !! X cycling is definitely better for me than running but more subject to the weather so I’m going to keep going with C25K for a few weeks as well as getting in a cycle or two whenever I can!!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 06/02/2021 18:28

Cava I was thinking about repeating week 9. But w8 doesn’t seem to have that much audio so I sort of feel like I’m on my own. I’m really missing Jo and her friendly chatting.

I think once I’ve established an actual route I’ll try to extend it a bit more each time. I dabbled with that yesterday when I set off to see what the track was like further along.

I have really needed the achievement that goes with the program-left to my own devices I’m not sure I will be so determined. I’ve been looking at the zombie run app. Looks quite fun.

I’m still aching since yesterday and due to run tomorrow so I don’t know what to do. I’m going to stretch loads and see if the aches ease. I had a magnesium bath last night to help. I was going up and down hills a bit, so I think it’s knackered my legs!

The weather might decide for me, we are forecast snow!

redcandlelight · 06/02/2021 18:37

just saw this tweet and thought to share Grin

mobile.twitter.com/Botanygeek/status/1358046308330835971

Am I the only one that thinks the sunny, Californian voice of encouragement on running apps needs changing?

I’d run so much faster with a stern Singaporean voice of disapproval.

Can the wonderful Cherish Finden just do one? I’d run due to pure fear.

*How come you so weak??”

DobbyTheHouseElk · 06/02/2021 18:41

Very funny red Grin

I swapped to Michael yesterday because I hadn’t listened to him. Got caught in my thoughts and suddenly a deep voice boomed in my ear, I thought it was someone behind me! I’m sticking with Jo. I feel we are in this together now.

WellJuhnelle · 06/02/2021 19:07

I use Michael - I imagine him being a very fit PT who I don’t want to let down Grin

DobbyTheHouseElk · 06/02/2021 19:36

I started off with Sarah because I love her, but quickly realised she wasn’t going to motivate me because I know in her head she’d be saying “oh have a cake”

I had Laura once but didn’t get on with her. Jo seems my favourite.

Blush I even did a quiz to show who you were most suited to as a trainer Blush and it was Jo.

wizzler · 06/02/2021 19:53

I live Michael but when he says " I know how you feel" it makes me laugh.. can you imagine him being as wobbly legged as me after running for 3 minutes!

emilyjeff · 06/02/2021 20:07

For people wondering what to do after week 9, there are three 5k plus podcasts available, I have used them before. One focuses on speed, one stamina and cant remember the other one! Still with guided audio so makes you feel you're not alone. Link here anyway www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/couch-to-5k-plus-running-podcasts/
I'd definitely recommend having some sort of plan to stick to cos I am rubbish without and either don't go or just keep doing the same 2 mile route all the time!
Well done those who've run today, I'm planning on going tomorrow morning, hopefully out fairly early and miss the snow we've been forecast. But for now off to eat chocolate and drink wine! 😁

redcandlelight · 06/02/2021 20:11

after 'graduation': I have a few routes/parks and a few different length podcasts that are the right duration for 5k (about 40 min)

Inastatus · 06/02/2021 20:48

@VioletCharlotte - oh no, it does sound very similar. I used a foam roller today for the first time and I think it’s helped - it hurt like hell but sort of in a good way 😅 It’s really frustrating isn’t it? I was just getting into the swing of it all.

tizwozliz · 06/02/2021 20:49

Thanks for those links @emilyjeff

I did a 5 minute run 30 second walk repeat for my 5k today and was faster overall than just running but I know having a plan is better for me as even if I know the theory of what I should be doing I'm prone to slacking.

Glad I got out today, tomorrow my route will either be flooded or under snow depending on what form the precipitation takes.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 06/02/2021 20:53

Thanks emilyjeff I’ll look into those. I think I need something. Although DH will be pushing me out of the door to keep it up.

When we met I was a runner and was doing much longer runs and competitive runs.

Then a few things happened. Running stopped.

WhereAreWeNow · 06/02/2021 21:58

I wanted to do w6 r1 tomorrow but forecast is snow. Would it be mad to attempt to run in the snow? Will it be too slippery? I doubt we'll get much here. A light dusting.

randomsabreuse · 06/02/2021 22:47

Fresh snow is generally fine, even in road shoes.

Issues are if it rains first then freezes or trampled half melted snow that then refreezes.

Trail generally better than smooth tarmac - my local canal tow path (rough tarmac) is usually fine even when the smooth pavement is horrible. Gravel or grass is generally less slippery.

Bridges are often more icy than surfaces on the ground - and avoid known frost pockets - our local park is in a dip and has a lot of black ice on hills. Flat ground is easier if you do find ice.

Trail shoes might well be better than "pure" road shoes - but not necessarily.

fellrunner85 · 06/02/2021 22:54

I'm heading out early tomorrow, as - as @randomsabreuse says - fresh snow is fine. Not decided if I'm going road shoes or trail shoes yet though. I'm going on a longer run which is about half pavements and half muddy footpaths, so either will probably do . Running in the snow is lovely. Everything feels quieter and calmer, and it's fine to go as slow as you like Smile

Therearenomore · 07/02/2021 00:09

I love Jo, I did week 1 run 2 tonight and I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying it. Nice Jo should replace all sadistic PE teachers nationwide Smile

Onedropbeat · 07/02/2021 07:05

I’m cuddled up in bed and can hear the wind howling
I want to get out there before it snows but this wind isn’t helping me get there right now

WhereAreWeNow · 07/02/2021 10:19

Thanks for the snow advice. It hasn't settled here so it was fine. It was bloody cold and it was snowing but it wasn't slippery. It was hard work and I still feel like I'm slowly heaving my body around the park as opposed to gracefully, effortlessly bouncing along like other/proper runners. But I'm glad I went today as I suspect it will settle and it might get icy over the next few days.

Onedropbeat · 07/02/2021 10:26

I was being kicked in the back by my 8 month old for a solid hour until I gave up and decided that running would be better than that

I’m glad I went. I reversed my usual route which gave me more hills and extended it slightly.

Feeling good

redcandlelight · 07/02/2021 10:31

there is a blizzard going on where I am right now. seems that the cold (sub zero) will stay for a week or so.
will look if the loop in the sport park will be swept/gritted.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 07/02/2021 11:11

W9R1 !!!!!

Not a good run. It was so so cold. Horrible icy wind. Couldn’t hear my earphones because of the wind.

Anyway I did it! Felt very slow because of running into the headwind. 30mins done ✅.

Been home a while, had a hot shower and I’m still chilly. Bright red legs.

Hoping for some warmer weather and I’ll complete the last 2 runs.

Talksunderwater · 07/02/2021 11:28

Wow, well done to all of you who have gone out this morning. I have completely wimped out - icy wind is definitely not my thing! It’ll be the indoor exercise bike for me today (and possibly for the rest of the week if the forecast is true).

Onedropbeat · 07/02/2021 11:30

Has anyone tried the H&M sports bras and running leggings? Are they any good?

likeamillpond · 07/02/2021 12:49

@Cavagirl

Well done today's runners! I'd planned to go today but work was nuts so it's been postponed to tomorrow! I'd started to compile a "running to beats" playlist - haven't nailed it yet - but if you Google songs bpm there's loads of websites that will show you songs with the same. Mr Blue Sky is 180bpm & there are loads similar Smile
Eminem Lose Yourself is a good steady one to run to. Also Taylor Swift Shake it Off
