Hi everyone

I've started this thread as I couldn't add any more posts to the other one. Hopefully you all find this thread!!

Hope everyone had enjoyed their day - so bored at home right now I'm glad I have the run to look forward to. Waited till it got dark and I headed out with my new running buddy - my 11yo ds. Yes he ran ahead of me and stopped a few times so I could catch up, but we ran 4.46km in 33mins and I'm so proud of both of us! (And little dog of course who's my faithful running buddy). It was a bit drizzly tonight which was actually quite nice as it wasn't that cold so the rain cooled me off a bit.

I've been thinking of how I can improve my stride length and I wonder if I can use my rest days to do W1r1 and try to do it with much longer strides? Seeing my son running I realise how inefficient my stride is. If I can only learn to open my stride I could run much further in the same time. If I can walk tomorrow I might try that to see if I can.

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs today!

Birthday's, annual leave and life got in the way for about a week and half so i haven't gone for a run for a little bit but I jumped straight back in where I left off at W3R1. The run time wasn't too much of a jump and I'd been out on long walks and a few long cycle rides which will have kept my stamina up so it didn't feel too bad getting back into it. I figured I could drop back down and repeat W2 if i felt I needed it but it felt great. I'm hoping this is going to improve my fitness but to be honest I'm mostly doing this for my mental health. I'm finding it really cathartic to burn off some anxiety energy. Need to keep reminding myself that I always feel better after its done.

redcandlelight · 09/03/2021 13:58

I find the regular and deep breathing very relaxing after I finished

redcandlelight · 10/03/2021 16:34

strong winds and horizontal rain. but glad I went out.
went to a sportspark to avoid trees. weather is looking vile for a few days.

emilyjeff · 10/03/2021 16:55

Well done anyone that's run in today's crappy weather! I did 5k again today, in under 30 mins, definitely feeling like its getting easier 😊 Ran round country park again so pretty flat, managed to miss the rain but was very windy!
Got a niggling pain in the front/side of my left leg but not sure if it's shin or calf related. Anyone any idea how I can tell?

wizzler · 10/03/2021 16:59

Right you have all inspired me. I'm setting off!

redcandlelight · 10/03/2021 17:38

emily does the shin feel bruised?
that's how my shin splints started.

emilyjeff · 10/03/2021 18:24

@redcandlelight It doesn't hurt all the time, not when walking only running. It's sore if I press on it though, on the inside of my shin. I have had shin problems before but it was in both legs and it was when I first started running which I think is quite common. Really hoping it's muscular, don't want to have to rest it just as I'm building up my fitness!

redcandlelight · 10/03/2021 19:39

maybe some magnesium supplements?
or epsom salts in the bath?

WhereAreWeNow · 11/03/2021 08:42

Wow. 5k under 30mins is brilliant @emilyjeff . I hope the shin pain eases off. Hot bath and some stretches?

WhereAreWeNow · 11/03/2021 08:44

I'm having to adjust to the new back to school routine. I was going running early, before breakfast. But now DD is back at school, mornings are much busier and I need to do packed lunch as well as breakfast and help her with her hair etc. Then I'm stuck at work for the rest of the day. I need to either get up earlier or find a way of sneaking a run in during my working day.

Onedropbeat · 11/03/2021 09:16

Knees are getting better. It’s a whole week off so far.
Hoping to be able to run again by weekend

I normally go in the evening when DH gets home. Glad it’s getting lighter. Recent events would make me more nervous than I already am at running in the dark

emilyjeff · 11/03/2021 10:45

Thanks for the advice, have done some yoga/ stretches this morning. Not planning on running again til Fri or Sat, will just do a shortish one and see how it is

WhereAreWeNow · 11/03/2021 10:59

@Onedropbeat I hate that we have to worry for our safety when we run. I turned back from a run early the other week because I could see there was no one else around apart from one guy up ahead and I just didn't have a good feeling about it. I like to run on my own and I enjoy the solitude so it's a fine balance between finding that space and solitude and not finding myself on my own in a scary situation.

redcandlelight · 11/03/2021 11:20

that's why I went to run at a sports park at dark in the winter.
well lit, no hiding places.
very well attended.

emilyjeff · 11/03/2021 14:56

@WhereAreWeNow I was saying this to DH the other day. I always run in the day, but some quite remote places. If I see a man walking on his own, particularly no dog or anything I'm always a bit twitchy. It's terrible that we feel like that but guess it's the world we live in x

BobVance · 11/03/2021 18:21

Just finished week 4 and catching up on the thread. So sad we even have to consider safety but good that we talk about it I think. I’m very glad the days are getting longer now, that’s for sure.

I always make sure I tell DH my route and how long I will be. I think I’ll also set up tracking just in case.

Stay safe everyone.

ThereAreNoMore · 11/03/2021 20:18

It's so sad and so enraging. That poor woman and her family Sad

I just did W4R2. I've been getting a crampy pain in my calf for the last few runs though it's been happening later and later which I'm hoping is me getting used to running. It didn't happen until the very end of the last run tonight when I was pushing myself a bit. Did anyone else get it when they started? It feels like I've a knot in it.

longlivetheking · 11/03/2021 20:20

Hi all, hope it’s ok to jump on.
I started C25K in Jan after a lifetime of not exercising. I found it difficult, got to W4R2 and had to stop due to painful knees and a really sore ankle. Started again at W2R2 and I’m due to do W3R3 tomorrow, experiencing some pain again but this time inner thigh on one leg and top of shin in the other!! I’ve tested a few days now so will see how tomorrow goes.
I’m finding it really frustrating to stop/start but guess it’s to be expected as my body is probably still in shock at having to exercise Blush anyway, I’m glad to have found this thread and will keep reading for motivation!

WhereAreWeNow · 11/03/2021 21:06

@longlivetheking if you weren't exercising before, it's worth doing strengthening exercises. Actually, it's worth doing them even if you were exercising before. If you Google "strengthening exercises running" an NHS page should come up that has a good, simple exercise plan.
I thought I was going to have to give up in the early weeks due to ankle and knee pain but doing regular strength exercises has made such a difference. Having a strong core and glutes (as well as strong legs and ankles) helps with your stability and control and helps avoid injury.

longlivetheking · 11/03/2021 21:13

Oh thank you, I’ll take a look! I really want to keep it going - the mornings I haven’t run this week I have still got up and out the house with the dog so I keep in the habit but I’m not a patient person and was so hoping to be further forward by now!

Cavagirl · 11/03/2021 22:31

@Therearenomore I get crampy calves sometimes - invariably when I've not been stretching enough! Get yourself a foam roller, they are great for calves.

redcandlelight · 12/03/2021 08:46
