Hi everyone

I've started this thread as I couldn't add any more posts to the other one. Hopefully you all find this thread!!

Hope everyone had enjoyed their day - so bored at home right now I'm glad I have the run to look forward to. Waited till it got dark and I headed out with my new running buddy - my 11yo ds. Yes he ran ahead of me and stopped a few times so I could catch up, but we ran 4.46km in 33mins and I'm so proud of both of us! (And little dog of course who's my faithful running buddy). It was a bit drizzly tonight which was actually quite nice as it wasn't that cold so the rain cooled me off a bit.

I've been thinking of how I can improve my stride length and I wonder if I can use my rest days to do W1r1 and try to do it with much longer strides? Seeing my son running I realise how inefficient my stride is. If I can only learn to open my stride I could run much further in the same time. If I can walk tomorrow I might try that to see if I can.

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs today!

@emilyjeff

For people wondering what to do after week 9, there are three 5k plus podcasts available, I have used them before. One focuses on speed, one stamina and cant remember the other one! Still with guided audio so makes you feel you're not alone. Link here anyway www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/couch-to-5k-plus-running-podcasts/ I'd definitely recommend having some sort of plan to stick to cos I am rubbish without and either don't go or just keep doing the same 2 mile route all the time! Well done those who've run today, I'm planning on going tomorrow morning, hopefully out fairly early and miss the snow we've been forecast. But for now off to eat chocolate and drink wine! 😁
Thanks for that!
likeamillpond · 07/02/2021 13:05

After having to miss a week I'm now back on it.
W5r2 completed.
It was bitter this morning. I could really feel the Beast from the east 2!
I might repeat some of the w5 runs this week, just to get me back on track and can start w6 the following Monday.

emilyjeff · 07/02/2021 14:28

Well I didn't get up as early as planned, took the dogs out for a quick mile up the road and back this morning and decided its far too cold and windy to run!
Planning to do some yoga instead and possibly run tomorrow although I don't know that the forecast is much better. Either way I've run twice this week and feel like my running mojo has improved so its all good!

emilyjeff · 07/02/2021 14:29

Forgot to say big well done to those who have run today 🏃‍♀️💪

wizzler · 07/02/2021 18:33

Just back from completing w4r2. It was bitingly cold but the pavements were fine. Didn't really want to go out but if we have snow this week I may not be able to run for a few days so wanted to stay on track.
Happy I completed it though we can turn the central heating off and rely on the glow from my cheeks to heat the house!!

randomsabreuse · 07/02/2021 19:48

I did a 50 minute "easy" run. Was not running the whole time as I decided to go exploring, and despite heading out in road shoes my exploring led me onto interesting trails. Ended up going to the top of my local "bing" (aka spoil heap from an old mine) which was definitely not something I'm running up at the moment (too steep...) although I did run down which was fun. Sometimes the "plan" - I'm following my Garmin Coach 5k improvement plan - is less important than doing something fun. I do definitely need a plan - I've been out 4 times a week since I started it and have always struggled with consistency unless I'm on a plan for a race.

minipie · 07/02/2021 20:59

Just a quick one to say thank you to whoever recommended the Nike Run Club app. Tried it out yesterday and liked it - the main coach guy is very chatty but I quite like that, it distracts me and stops me thinking about the hard work of running!

Highly recommend if you find the talking bits in C25K help you. They have music in the background too.

Well done to all those who ran in the snow! Impressive commitment.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 07/02/2021 21:19

Thanks minipie I’ll give it a go.

Cavagirl · 08/02/2021 10:48

I'm going to go at lunchtime. I'm writing it down so I have to go.
Oh God it's so bloody cold out there!!!
But I've decided I have to go otherwise I won't go all week will I, it's like this til Sunday.
So I'm going today. Yes I am yes I am yes I am.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 08/02/2021 10:58

Good luck Cava. Took me ages to properly warm up after my run yesterday. My legs were frozen on the cool down walk home. I certainly “cooled down”.

Blobby10 · 08/02/2021 11:59

Good luck to everyone heading out today - snow has stopped my running Sad but hopefully it will bugger off quickly so I can get back on track! Its just too slippery to go out and temperatures not forecast to get above -1 until at least Wednesday so even if the main roads are clear and safe to run along (at 5am!) getting to them will be a major risk and I'm too old to be falling over! Might actually hurt myself these days Grin

emilyjeff · 08/02/2021 13:37

Haha good plan @Cavagirl I am doing the same! Finishing work at 3 so planning on going straight out when I finish. We had a tiny bit of snow first thing but looks to have all melted now so should be OK I reckon just very cold!
@randomsabreuse What is the Garmin coach thing please? I have a garmin watch and so use the garmin connect app but didn't know there was a coach or any running plans, is it through the app?

minipie · 08/02/2021 13:52

I’m planning to go at 3.30! Like you Cava I’m writing it down for accountability Grin Very urban here so hopefully the pavements on main roads will be snow free. Definitely not keen on falling over.

Cavagirl · 08/02/2021 14:28

Just got back! Actually quite nice running in the light snow once I got going!
That's week 8 done then 😳

DobbyTheHouseElk · 08/02/2021 14:51

Well done Cava. Have you warmed up? I think the wind we had yesterday made it difficult to run in.

No snow here...yet. But still freezing with a biting wind. Should be running again tomorrow...will check the weather.

schoolcook · 08/02/2021 15:07

I used the dreadmill this morning really couldn't face that wind !

For those who use a garmin watch - what would you say is the advantage over a Fitbit charge 3 ?

I've been hankering after one for ages but keep telling myself it won't make me any faster Grin

Cavagirl · 08/02/2021 15:47

Dobby had to run straight onto a long conference call but can stand by the radiator which is working nicely Grin

minipie · 08/02/2021 17:49

I chickened out. Friend said she’d been at the park and seen several runners slip. DH fractured his wrist falling on ice two years ago and can’t be risking that at the moment!

I did some upper body weights instead so... something.

Therearenomore · 08/02/2021 19:15

It's 1 degrees and windy here, I'm dithering but it's been a long day so I think I might go to clear my head once I've got everything and everyone sorted.

I ordered some shoes and they arrived today but they're too narrow so they're going back and I've ordered the wide fit instead. Slightly disappointed but it did highlight how crappy my old ones were even by just standing in them so I'm looking forward to getting ones that fit.

I have a fitbit but DH uses a Garmin with a HR strap schoolcook. His HR is more accurate and he gets fancy little graphs and maps with different colours highlighting his speed and stuff. I get a animation of a bird pulling a banner when I hit my step target though so I console myself with that Grin

Therearenomore · 08/02/2021 20:51

And I did it! Week 1 done Grin

WhereAreWeNow · 08/02/2021 23:38

Well done @Therearenomore!

WellJuhnelle · 09/02/2021 07:39

Disappointed this morning - had to miss yesterday’s run as I had my first vaccine on Saturday evening and the side effects completely wiped me out.

Got up early this morning so I could go but it is far too icy. Will do some form of exercise video later but I never thought I would be somebody who was disappointed to not be able to run!

Blobby10 · 09/02/2021 08:01

I managed wk 5 run 1 yesterday evening - was driving home from work and decided the pavements looked clear enough and apart from a couple of bits where i had to to an unathletic leap from ice to less slippery parts, it was OK! And I ran the first 5 minutes completely uphill - somehow! Feeling quite pleased with myself for that!

Well done @Therearenomore - it won't seem five minutes before you will be running for five minutes!

WellJuhnelle same here - I was so down yesterday after having to miss my early morning run. The mood lift when I managed to get out in the evening (although I do prefer mornings!) was amazing.

Trulyatraditionalman · 09/02/2021 08:17

The snow pretty is driving me CRAZY!! Here in East Kent, it poured with rain all day Saturday. Snow came on Sunday which froze the rain, and now people have trampled on the snow and compacted it, meaning that most streets and roads are absolute treacherous.

I was supposed to go for Wk 6 Run 2 yesterday but I think running will be out for a few days, as I'm terrified of slipping!

Has anyone else braved it?

Well done @Cavagirl and @therearenomore 😊

WellJuhnelle · 09/02/2021 08:46

@Blobby10 well done for getting out in the evening! I have never been productive in an evening, after about 3pm I never achieve much Blush.
