Peloton - worth it?

I'm contemplating getting a Peloton bike. Are they worth it?
Would I be better off spending that money on a turbo trainer and bike as then I'd have a bike I could use outside as well as in.
It's is quite an expensive purchase so was hoping to hear from those that have one before I make up my mind.

You can turn subtitles on.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 27/12/2020 18:10

Thank you both - that's very helpful.

lalalalasee · 27/12/2020 19:46

I am new to the idea of peloton. Had thought they were overpriced and I have my old road bike set up on a turbo trainer but not massively motivated to use it and since I went back to work in September (teacher) I have been exhausted and haven't been on it once. However I am extremely competitive and as I can't run right now due to arthritis I think peloton may work for me. Am I right in thinking it's about £45 a month for subscription once you have already paid out for the bike? Or £45 subscription and £45 a month for 3 years to buy the bike? £90 a month will be a lot of money to make it worthwhile

lalalalasee · 27/12/2020 19:50

Also if the app is only £12.99 - what is the extra money for if the monthly subscription is £45?

Batshittery · 27/12/2020 20:06

The monthly subscription is £39. I think the app is fairly good, you can use it with your static bike, but I don't think you get all the metrics that you do with subscription ( I could be wrong) I know on the Peloton forums that there are many riders who don't have the Peloton but use the app on their own bikes.

lalalalasee · 27/12/2020 20:59

Thanks. I couldn't work out the cost of the subscription but looks like it will be worth it if I am more motivated to do a bit more! I might order one and just pay the £12 with my bike and turbo trainer whilst waiting for the peloton bike to arrive then will be able to see if the cost difference is worth it in the first 30 days

Tambourinetunes · 28/12/2020 23:40

Yes they are subtitled. I read them for spin classes, perhaps if doing a strength one watch and read it first to get an idea of how the class develops. I read on an ipad which is fine on a bike but I would struggle for the other classes. I hope this helps @EmbarrassingAdmissions

TwoMuchTwoYoung · 28/12/2020 23:54

Lalalalasee
Once you've ordered the bike you don't pay the monthly subscription till it arrives so you'll save the £12.99 a month.
Also the 30 day trial gives you complete peace of mind.
I returned mine after 30 days ( because I upgraded to the bike plus)
And the money was in my account in 2 days.
Here's a referral code if you'd like £100 off accessories

OP one thing to note because your thinking of using the bike you ride on outside is to get spare typres.

If oyu have a turbo trainer and hook your bike up to it and use it, do not go outside and ride on the same back tyre please its not safe.

You can get special turbo tyre.

I have a spare road bike so hooked that up to smart turbo trainer which provides me with all the metrics I need.

I also think you need to decide how much will you use it? If you go out riding realistically in a year how much indoor cycling would you do?

For me I only cycle indoors right now because its too cold, wet windy days. But come most likley late feb when its not as bad I'll be out on my bike instead all the way through spring, summer and autumn. So a pelaton for me isn't a cost effective choice because I won't use it for 2/3 of the year.

@EmbarrassingAdmissions

My parents are Deaf, BSL users, so I am one of the those hearing children who needs subtitles on everything because that’s what I am used to. And I use them on my bike too. Talking to others about it I see that a lot of people use them, deaf or not.

They are really easily switched on. They are ok quality but could do with some improvement. Random snippets of songs the instructor sings along to might be included, which will seem really random if you can’t hear the music. They don’t always have a lot of direction like (SINGS) etc. Annoyingly there might be a countdown to a next stage that suddenly comes up all at once “5, 4, 3, 2, 1” instead of timing with when the instructor is saying it. But if you combine lip reading with reading subtitles, it’s not bad. They are pretty face on, and most instructors count down with their hands or some other gesture too. Especially Alex Toussaint.

I’d really love a Peloton but we live in a 1st floor flat.
Is it madness to consider one? Would it be really noisy for the neighbours downstairs who already hate us?

Ramblingwords · 03/01/2021 17:06

The motion of the bike is silent. I wear in ear blue tooth headphones and ride at 6am without waking anyone else up.

The main thing would be setting it up well so it sits flat on the floor and can't wobble at all. It has adjustable feet to help you do this.

It's over 9 stone and very solid so pretty easy to set up so it is steady and silent.

I had to put mine in a carpeted room, but ply and a mat has sorted any wobble.

Batshittery · 03/01/2021 18:18

The bike is silent. I also wear headphones if I'm riding early. not a problem.

HeyLala · 03/01/2021 20:02

@Ramblingwords

Thanks for the nod to the design company. Just ordered the pivet.
Got my bike early in March in lockdown 1 and was a bit upset when the + came out later with the pivoting screen as could really use this for the boot camp classes.

If anyone is thinking about it and can afford it. Go for it. It's fabulous. For me I worked out it was less than a 2 year payback on my gym membership, and now I've already nearly covered one year already.

I use it every day. Peleton outdoor for Power walking or running with the dog, depending on he feels ! Cycling every other day with yoga everyday with a meditation before bed. I've completely immersed myself in Peleton to my surprise but it's working for me.

Ramblingwords · 03/01/2021 20:23

@HeyLala I bought a pivot too. Just fitted it a couple of days ago. It's fab. Really smooth moving and feels sturdy. Also, no damage to the bike at all so will be able to remove it if I ever need any warranty work done.

HeyLala · 03/01/2021 20:37

@Ramblingwords

That's great news. When the + came out I did wonder if Peleton would do a retrofit part. I'll let you know how I get on when it arrives in 2 weeks!

Not at all. It is ridiculously quiet, almost silent (if you use headphones obviously). Mine arrived last week and I love it already.

You will need a mat to protect the floor but hardly any space really. We didn't buy the Peloton mat just a foam mat from Halfords. You need 4ft by 2ft for the bike with a bit of clearance around obviously.

My code is 382MZV if you decide to bite the bullet which gives us both £100 towards Peloton gear!

mouldygrapes · 04/01/2021 13:02

Thanks everyone. Very tempting!! I’m 20 weeks pregnant so not sure whether to get now or wait. I did used to spin regularly before lockdown but haven’t done it for over a year now

Batshittery · 04/01/2021 17:11

My code is 3JMYTU if anyone is interested Smile

Merriboo · 07/01/2021 21:23

Hi

Just wondering how everyone got on with their Pelotons?
Did anyone experience long delivery lead times?

Anyone go for one of the alternatives (Echelon/Kaiser/nordictrack)?

allfurcoatnoknickers · 08/01/2021 01:12

Mine arrived on Boxing Day and I'm already obsessed. I'd had the app for a while and done the Yoga classes and some stretching, so had a good idea of what to expect.

I'm in the US, but the bike wasn't actually supposed to arrive until tomorrow - then we got an email saying we could get. earlier delivery. We ordered in mid-November, so it took about 6 weeks I think.

NeurologicallySpeaking · 08/01/2021 07:03

@Merriboo mine arrived just after Christmas and it's great. Feel free to DM me if you have specific questions

Batshittery · 08/01/2021 14:41

Merriboo I think the delivery dates given when you order are quite some time away, but they can often arrange quicker delivery.
Do it, you won't be sorry Grin

feellikezerobucks · 17/01/2021 17:09

I'm looking at jumping on the Peloton bandwagon...
Looking at the bike+ basics, but have £100 off accessories so was thinking about the resistance bands and earbuds...any other recommendations?
Was planning on wearing my trainers when I spin and having upstairs on carpet so wasn't going to bother with the mat, so any feedback greatly appreciated!

Ramblingwords · 17/01/2021 21:39

@feellikezerobucks do you mean trainers rather than cycling shoes? You would need to buy toe cages. The pedals are made for clipping in.

I would really suggest that you buy proper shoes to clip in -spinning is a 360deg motion, you pull up as well as push down. It really wouldn’t make much sense to spend that much on a spin bike if you aren’t going to do that. Toes cages are an alternative but don’t come close.

And yes, you really do need a mat. The bike is about 9 stone in weight. The mat protects your floor, catches sweat, improves stability etc.
