Peloton - worth it?

I'm contemplating getting a Peloton bike. Are they worth it?
Would I be better off spending that money on a turbo trainer and bike as then I'd have a bike I could use outside as well as in.
It's is quite an expensive purchase so was hoping to hear from those that have one before I make up my mind.

I have a good quality spin bike. It was half the price of a Peloton bike and is really sturdy and quiet to use (as I imagine a Peloton is). As PP have said, you can do the app subscription without buying their bike, so I’d do that. It’s better value.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 11/11/2020 09:54

@Ramblingwords, my bike has an electronic widget for cadence and whatnot. DH bought a separate iPad holder for ours as it didn’t come with a factory fitted one. We also have a smart TV in the room, so can do spin classes on there.

westr · 11/11/2020 10:29

Can I just ask where people have put their peloton or other spin bike? I'm thinking spare room but maybe it is too heavy to get up the stairs. Thanks

JonHammIsMyJamm · 11/11/2020 11:40

I have heavy gym equipment (spin bike, treadmill and heavy concept 2 rower) upstairs, @westr. The only one that isn’t ideal is the treadmill. We are having an outbuilding built in the new year to house all of the gym equipment but certainly the bike and rower are fine.

westr · 11/11/2020 12:31

Thanks - good to know

Ramblingwords · 11/11/2020 12:58

@JonHammisMyJamm

Sounds like that works for you. But setting up the app with various monitors is still not the same experience as having the full peloton set up. I think there's a misconception that the app is what peloton users see on their integrated screen. It really isnt. I use the app on my TV and phone for non bike classes and it is very different. That's why the app subscription and bike subscription are different.

Even with full output monitors on your bike, without the integrated package there is no live interaction with the class, leaderboard, community, or power zone classes.

That might be totally fine for you, but spending twice is more expensive than spending once so people should really think about what they want out of it.

Ours is in the spare room. The delivery guys brought it up for us. They said definitely take the screen off for moving it around, particularly if you're going upstairs, makes easier to manoeuvre. It is heavy (over 9st, I think), but not so heavy that two people can't move it around.
westr · 11/11/2020 16:04

Thanks. I have a very small spare room/office which is where I'd put the peloton - how much space roughly so they need? Someone I think said they were pretty quiet to run?

You can get an equivalent set up. It may not be as streamlined or high-status as Peloton but it works. If Peloton is your deal, great.

I’m not interested in leaderboards or the cultish element of the community so that doesn’t affect me. I accept that it may be a big deal to others who find it motivational, each to their own.

Batshittery · 11/11/2020 18:55

@Chaotic45
Definitely get him a sweat towel. It is essential. A plastic water bottle. One that you don't need to unscrew the lid. Cheap heart rate monitor/ear phones. There are quite a few classes that involve weights. I have some that I bought with the bike and sit in a cage at the back, but some heavier weights would be useful for anyone strong.

westr It is quite large with the screen on, and it's virtually silent when in use. They are very heavy to shift about.

PaddyF0dder · 11/11/2020 18:58

Be warned though that delivery is variable right now. We got ours in early October. They brought it to the front door but no further.

It’s a very, very heavy and solid piece of kit. Lifting it and moving it is pretty hard-going.

fitbciz1 · 11/11/2020 18:58

@westr The dimensions are here: support.onepeloton.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360042990472-Peloton-Bike-Dimensions

I think I read something that recommended having 60cm gap all the way round which we don’t quite have but it’s fine. Bear in mind if you want to do rides that incorporate arm toning you’ll need space to wave your arms around.

It’s silent - our teenage night owl often uses it very late and I can’t hear a thing.

westr · 11/11/2020 19:03

Thanks everyone! I got in touch with peloton today and they aren't delivering to my area for 8-12 weeks unfortunately. I was hoping for a lockdown gym substitute.

Batshittery · 11/11/2020 19:16

westr They sometimes bring the dates forward.

IceniWarrior · 11/11/2020 19:28

I'd love a Peloton but I think I am too short! Have the perfect spot in our dressing room.

Batshittery · 11/11/2020 19:31

I have seen on the groups that someone was 4'9 and she managed ok Iceni

IceniWarrior · 11/11/2020 19:35

I think I was reading it isn't just leg, but also arm length? I need to research more.

Batshittery · 11/11/2020 19:38

Ok. Good luck with it

nancybotwinbloom · 11/11/2020 19:40

Mine is fucking great for hanging clothes on Blush

Batshittery · 11/11/2020 19:43

nancy Get yourself on it Grin. My DH said that I would only use it as an expensive clothes horse, but I've proved him wrong.

nancybotwinbloom · 11/11/2020 20:06

@Batshittery

I am hoping for some garden leave soon ams I will not be off it!

nancybotwinbloom · 11/11/2020 20:06

What are you doing @Batshittery if you don't mind me asking

Batshittery · 11/11/2020 20:10

I'm doing a 7 week challenge at the moment with a group of female riders (I only 'know' them through FB) so there are 3 foundation rides, which are power zone rides and a combination of climb/hiit rides. Sometimes I just do a 20 minute recovery/low impact ride. I ride every day, which I never thought I would. I'm not very fit but getting better Grin

MinecraftMother · 11/11/2020 20:51

Yes, get it. If you don't like it they keep their value so just sell...join the Facebook peloton group if you still need convincing and for a 10% off code when you buy, coz you will!

Ramblingwords · 11/11/2020 20:52

@JonHammIsMyJamm You seem to be contradicting yourself by saying that you can get an equivalent set up, then commenting on the things that you can’t actually get without the full set up; like the leaderboard. It may not be for you, but for some people knowing about the differences does matter. If you have only used the app, perhaps you don’t really know the extent of the benefits of the full package?

Whenever stuff about Peloton comes up on mumsnet there’s always someone saying they can achieve the same cheaper (but then describe a set up which sounds great, but not actually the same) or someone making some comment about it being “cultish”. It is designed to be cultish! You are buying into an experience that is addictive and designed that way with challenges, features, programs, rewards and community aspects that keep you interested and motivated. And it seems to work...peloton bikes are apparently used something like 20x more frequently than other forms of home exercise and the average frequency of use is something like 4x a week. If you can be motivated to work out like that over a long period without the cult of peloton, more power to you. But many people need the push it gives you. And when it comes to health, fitness and just regularly moving your body, isn’t it about being honest about what actually works? Even if what really works is psychological (the cult!) rather than an actual physical difference in what you can do on one bike versus another?
