Anyone else rediscovering running?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/03/2020 12:45

I used to be able to run 5k+ in my sleep and then the dreaded menopause hit and my joints started hurting, so I went back to stuff like spinning and swimming. Now my gym is closed I've decided I need to keep doing some exercise or I'll end up the size of a house!

Just done my first 5k (alternating between running and walking) which I will build up over the coming weeks of I can. Feeling a bit chuffed with myself!

Anyone want to join me and share their successes?

Between working and being responsible for most of the week time childcare I've not had time to run. Hopi g I can make the most of this time by getting out in the mornings before wfh starts.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/03/2020 14:22

Lighter mornings will help too. I'm lucky that my daughter is 16 and can look after herself.

Me too! Well more like discovering running. I normally do anything to avoid it but went last night after the kids complained the rower kept them awake (if they hadn’t made me spend the day stopping them hitting each other continuously then I could have used it at another time!)

I was surprised to find I could run for ten or so minutes before stopping. I will try and build that up.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/03/2020 15:04

Well done you! Gorgeous day for it today as well.

Not rediscovered, as I have never really run, but we recently bought a treadmill and I’m aiming to do c25k

PatchworkElmer · 22/03/2020 15:07

I hate running but I’ve done 2 5ks this week, and am trying to muster the energy to go again tonight...

IceKitten · 22/03/2020 15:09

I went for my third run in 4 days this morning, this is unheard of for me! Even managed to get the kids out with me too Smile

jewel1968 · 22/03/2020 15:12

No but have rediscovered my eliptical machine I bought when on maternity leave. I was going to get rid of it. So glad I didn't.

There are loads of exercise offerings online when or if the day comes that you can't run.

Itsarainysunnyday · 22/03/2020 15:13

Me too!

I’ve been a dedicated crossfitter for the past 3 years and abandoned my previous 20+ miles a week.

Now I’m having to run and I really enjoy it. Still miss my weights but it’s surprised me.

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 22/03/2020 15:14

I started 0-5k yesterday in an effort to get outside and stay fit

Runningonempty84 · 22/03/2020 15:28

Kind of the opposite for me - I've never run so little Sad Trying to keep things ticking over, but so difficult to find the motivation to fit the long runs in without anything to train for, and with social distancing in mind too.

Managed 35 miles this week, but already feel like I'm stagnating.

EmpressPenguin · 22/03/2020 18:06

Not rediscovering so much as ramping up now the gym is closed. I am scrupulously observing social distancing but I'm finding that a small minority of people are not :( I'm afraid we may end up in a situation where even solo running is banned or severely curtailed. It is the only thing keeping me going in the current climate. Watching a heron soar across a lake yesterday made everything better.

Ponks · 22/03/2020 18:13

I'm aiming to run a few times a week now I'm wfh. Used to run regularly before I broke my leg a few years ago. Can only run a couple of miles at a time but it's good to be out. So worried about potential lockdown and restrictions on exercising outdoors.

delilahbucket · 22/03/2020 18:15

Just waiting for my new sports bra to arrive and then going to attempt a run. I stopped after an injury in 2011 and I have no idea if it will aggravate things. I was swimming but obviously I can't do that anymore.

EmpressLangClegInChair · 22/03/2020 18:19

I haven’t run for ages but now I’m working from home & my yoga studio’s closed, l’m doing an early morning 2k round the nearest park on weekdays.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/03/2020 20:30

Yay loads of us then! Let's keep each other posted on progress 🏃‍♀️

nbee84 · 22/03/2020 20:36

I've been out twice this week. 6.5km the 1st time and 8.5km the 2nd. I usually do classes 6 days a week and 3 or 4 days would jump on the treadmill and do 3 -5km before a class. It is soooo much harder running outside 🥵 but I have enjoyed it.

EmpressPenguin · 22/03/2020 21:10

I also do a lot of classes but also run a fair bit. I'm going to rebalance more towards running but am also going to be cautious, I don't want to escalate too much and risk injury. So my plan is to run a bit more - more short runs - and break it up with at-home workouts. I've no idea how this will work out but I need to do something!

I'm like Empress. Went out at 6.30 this morning, chilly but once I'd quickly warmed up it was perfect. Gorgeous sunshine and enough people about for me to feel safe (from bad people) but plenty of space to observe 2m.

I'll keep going until I'm not allowed and whilst I can observe 2m and I'm feeling well.

I still feel guilty because even though we aren't going out except for food from shops, I feels like I should stay put at home full stop.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 23/03/2020 10:09

And agree some balance will be good so trying some yoga (Adrienne on YTube) and making sure I stretch.

Pavements were a bit icy first thing today so take care and early morning runners.

Good luck everyone Grin

There’s something about seeing all the new growth on the trees & hearing the birds making a racket, even with all this shit going on. Yesterday morning I went out around 7am to the local nature reserve, just me & the odd dog walker, & listened to a woodpecker.

Itsarainysunnyday · 23/03/2020 10:25

Went out at 6am, loads of runners/walkers out. Obviously making the most of it while they can.
