Anyone else rediscovering running?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/03/2020 12:45

I used to be able to run 5k+ in my sleep and then the dreaded menopause hit and my joints started hurting, so I went back to stuff like spinning and swimming. Now my gym is closed I've decided I need to keep doing some exercise or I'll end up the size of a house!

Just done my first 5k (alternating between running and walking) which I will build up over the coming weeks of I can. Feeling a bit chuffed with myself!

Anyone want to join me and share their successes?

Opposite for me too as we can't go out to run. Dd is really into athletics and is worried that she will have lost all her stamina when this finishes.

Anyone housebound with kids, Joe Wicks is doing a fun 30 minute workout Monday to Friday, 9am until the schools open again.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 23/03/2020 11:49

Yes, we did that today. I don't think my downstairs neighbours will be too impressed! Grin

OK we have now dragged out our exercise bike from the garage and cleaned it up - it's sat there on the patio ready for my first open air spin class later!

I have restarted my Jillian Michaels addiction.

RHTawneyonabus · 25/03/2020 08:18

I did my first 5k for years! The last part was mostly brisk walking but I managed it in 37 minutes. I’d like to get it under 30. What’s a good time for an averagely fit person?

WaterIsWide · 25/03/2020 08:25

I'm rebuilding my fitness via my exercise dvds (as soon as I get off the sofa) then I will get back to my Couch to 5km plan where I left it at week five. I will hopefully be fit enough to do the first part of the week five plan.

However, small steps as they say.

Just got some excuses to work through first i.e. hunt out some toilet roll and get some other groceries.

Well I've already reinflamed an old injury through overdoing it on the running. I kind of expected this to happen, I'm just annoyed it's happened so fast.

Today instead of running and in between a bazillion online meetings, I've run up and down the stairs 20 times, done 3 Instagram workouts and walked to the shops, but my watch is still telling me I've barely moved. This being indoors is going to take some getting used to.

Hope the rest of you are still runnng and enjoying it. There is proper social distancing now, which is great.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 25/03/2020 21:24

@rhtawneyonabus 30 minutes for a 5k would be a great time.

@RHTawneyonabus So many variables, but for a woman in her 30s or 40s, I'd say under 25 mins would be a "good" time?

Bit of a guessing game tbh. But around 27 mins would bring you out with an age-grade score of 50 (which is bang in the middle). So a couple of minutes faster than that could be classed as "good", though it still wouldn't put you in the top 20 women finishers in most Parkruns.

RHTawneyonabus · 26/03/2020 09:03

Thanks all! I really meant good as in not crap rather than top twenty finisher. Will see how I go today

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 26/03/2020 09:22

So I'm not a super fast runner (and I'm 50) and I would be over the moon with 30 mins for a 5K! Think my best has been about 33 mins, but am rusty and getting back into it. Good luck!

EmpressLangClegInChair · 26/03/2020 10:36

I’m 46 and my fastest ever 5K was 32 mins - didn’t stop me completing a half marathon though! I decided I was never going to be super fast and that I wasn’t going to worry about it.

Runningonempty84 · 26/03/2020 15:34

Ah well! Good as in "not crap" is anything that leaves you feeling happy and that you've enjoyed it. I've had 20-min parkruns which made me feel like that, and 32-min ones too, back in the day. The time is secondary, really Smile

Thighmageddon · 30/03/2020 18:13

Yep, I've commandeered my dh treadmill, he is still working. So I've gone back and doing C25k on it before setting foot out in the real world.

I've also dusted off the exercise bike.

I've realised how much I've let my fitness go Blush

pomegranatefizz · 01/04/2020 10:30

I've been doing C25k again since the gym closed. Started on WK5 as had a reasonable level of fitness and had been using the treadmill and I'm loving it! Being outside is so much nicer than the gym when running and even though some days feel harder it's really doing wonders for my fitness levels. Got the 25 min solid run tonight, wish me luck!

ficklemissfickle · 12/04/2020 09:52

Not read whole thread but been on on/off runner for about 7 years, just started running daily every morning when I take the dog out, 4 mornings 20 minutes or so, 3 mornings 5k plus. It is really setting me up for the day psychologically & I dread to think how it will be if they stop us going out for exercise purposes Confused (disclaimer, see very few people & always cross over the road if I do!)
