Lighthearted thread - the downsides of getting fitter!!

Blobby10 · 28/03/2019 09:30

I've spent the last couple of years working much harder in the gym with weights and am now in possession of a much perkier posterior than I've ever had in my life! i'm 49 btw.

Whilst I love (and am feeling very chuffed about achieving) my 'new' shape, I have noticed that my normal mid rise knickers now spend a lot of time riding up in between my bum cheeks which is uncomfortable and embarrassing !

My darling daughter, herself an 18 year old semi professional sportswoman with her own pert derriere (!) said (somewhat sarcastically in my opinion Grin) "why do you think I wear thongs mum?".

So my downside of getting fitter is the need to purchase some thongs rather than granny pants!

Anyone else discovered their own downside? Grin

The amount of extra laundry generated by gym kit. Had a nasty cold for a week and not going to the gym has meant I’ve only needed to do one load this week.
Also having hair dilemmas (I have long, thick hair that takes an hour to wash and dry) do I wash it? Or do I douse in dry shampoo and shove it up?

emummy · 28/03/2019 10:05

Running out of space in my drawers for running gear. I really should throw some of it out, but can't quite bring myself to do it. Same goes for the running shoes cluttering up the hall cupboard - how can I throw away the shoes I ran my first marathon in?!

Blobby10 · 28/03/2019 10:13

@FasionFoodLaughs oh yes - the gym kit wash!! Add in cycling lycra at the weekend and it takes up a whole machine! Plus side it doesn't need ironing Grin. I'm lucky on the hair thing as mine is medium length - I shampoo every other day and just wash the sweat out in between, leave it to dry then pull into a ponytail.

@emummy yes to the shoes!! especially when you add in your kids shoes and trainers and boots! My daughter has the same size feet as me so I've taken to borrowing her cast offs for non-running exercise or casual walking Grin. it saves me buying more pairs! I also have a drawer dedicated to gym kit and a basket in my wardrobe for cycling lycra!

@Blobby10 has to buy a separate ottoman for my gym stuff, best 30 quid I’ve spent all year! 😂

FashionFoodLaughs · 28/03/2019 10:21

had to

DirtyDennis · 28/03/2019 10:28

How did you get a perky posterior?

I swim almost every day.
Hair is a big issue - I have bleached hair which takes huge amounts of maintenance and it prone to breaking/damage. Dilemmas all round.

I've also been told I smell of chlorine a lot of the time. DH reckons it actually smells a bit like sperm Shock

Related to this, I have no idea what swimming does to my skin but I just can't "hold" perfume any more. Even if I douse myself in it, it wear off so incredibly quickly. But I need perfume to cover up my spermy odour.

Blobby10 · 28/03/2019 11:14

@DirtyDennis I just spluttered my coffee at your 'spermy odour' Grin.

My perky (er) posterior is a result of lots of squats and dead lifts and cycling and hip thrusts and lunges and all sorts of evil exercises designed by my PT who I think is great but could cheerfully kill some mornings. Fortunately for him he's an online one and although I know him, he isn't in the proximity when I've working out so doesn't hear me cursing him Grin

Completely agree about the washing! I only joined gym this year and now doing several classes a week after work. I've had to get an extra 4 pairs of gym leggings and t shirts as I couldn't wash my clothes fast enough!

DirtyDennis · 28/03/2019 13:09

@Blobby10 It's not funny- DH has made me properly paranoid about it Grin

Sounds like you've worked really hard in the gym, well done. I'd love a perky posterior

WhoKnewBeefStew · 28/03/2019 13:12

Cardio is a nightmare. It used to take me half an hour to burn 300 calories (I was proper unfit) on the cross trainer, now I’ve been doing it a while, half an hour only burns 160 calories - I’ve started doing weights now as I can up the weight and not have to spend twice as long at the gym.

Long hair dilema here too

sar302 · 28/03/2019 13:36

I've just been whinging about this to a friend! After a year off exercise after my baby, I'd forgotten how much extra clothes washing and hair washing there is!!
I showered this morning when I got up. Went to the gym about 3 hrs later and showered and washed hair. Tonight I'm going swimming, which will mean further hair washing, and both kit washing and swimwear rinsing.

Totally loving it though 😄

Mysterian · 28/03/2019 13:39

Lost 2 and a half stone last year. New clothes needed.

IRun4Me · 28/03/2019 13:55

Couldn’t agree more about the washing, storage and hair washing.
Can also add in changing hair style. I always had mine long which was fine as I used to scrape it back in a ponytail and job done. I’ve had it cut shorter and love the style. But it’s not quite long enough to tie back and stay there but long enough to flap around my face or get really sweaty and get in my way. I don’t want to go shorter or grow it again as the rest of the time it’s a perfect length.

PinkBuffalo · 28/03/2019 14:04

I have very short hair, and I sweat so much in spin it feels like I've been in the shower Grin basically, if I get that bad I know I've done a good work out!

Blobby10 · 28/03/2019 14:21

@IRun4Me I only have my hair cut 2 or 3 times a year - its a chin-medium length depending on when I last had it cut! Just after I have it cut I can't get it all in a ponytail so just tie as much as I can back and put up with the sweaty hair feeling for a few weeks. When it gets really long, my fringe doesn't stay in a ponytail so I do the topknot first then gather it into a ponytail! It looks weird but works for me Grin

@PinkBuffalo so I'm not the only one to relish getting sweaty ? Yippee!! thought I was just weird

IRun4Me · 28/03/2019 14:31

Blobby I think it is because I’m still getting used to having it around my face when exercising. Sometimes I do just tie the front back at either side.
In my head I am an elegant vision when I run but I know the reality is I look like a slightly wobbly sweaty red tomato with hair stuck to my face. But I don’t care GrinGrin

7salmonswimming · 28/03/2019 14:44

I have the same issue with hair in face. Headbands are your friends. Tie up everything you can at the back of your head, push everything else off your face with a headband. Everything goes in the wash with your gym clothes. Hate having sweaty hair sticking to my face!

PinkBuffalo · 28/03/2019 14:51

blobby it always takes me by surprise as I wipe my face on my t shirt Grin

shitpark · 28/03/2019 18:03

Having a wardrobe of clothes I barely wear because I'm always in running/gym gear, likewise shoes.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 28/03/2019 18:06

I have frizzy curly hair that hates exercise and hates being washed often. Also I do weights and am quite strong, but still overweight and well upholstered, so I have arms like Popeye.

MorrisZapp · 28/03/2019 18:09

Having to speak to Steve and Denise every Monday night at the gym.

They're nice people but I'm there to kill myself on the treadmill, not ask questions about their kids who's names I always forget.

Gwenhwyfar · 28/03/2019 20:32

"I showered this morning when I got up. Went to the gym about 3 hrs later and showered and washed hair. "

Why did you shower when you got up if you were going to the gym and having another shower in 3 hours?
Also, having 3 showers a day is really bad for your skin.

Geekster1963 · 28/03/2019 22:18

I agree about the washing! It's endless I did an 81 Day run streak last year and spent the rest of the time washing running clothes. maybe if I'd really streaked it would have been better- Grin

Gwenhwyfar · 28/03/2019 22:29

I get a second wear of my gym clothes by airing them in between.
