Lighthearted thread - the downsides of getting fitter!!

Blobby10 · 28/03/2019 09:30

I've spent the last couple of years working much harder in the gym with weights and am now in possession of a much perkier posterior than I've ever had in my life! i'm 49 btw.

Whilst I love (and am feeling very chuffed about achieving) my 'new' shape, I have noticed that my normal mid rise knickers now spend a lot of time riding up in between my bum cheeks which is uncomfortable and embarrassing !

My darling daughter, herself an 18 year old semi professional sportswoman with her own pert derriere (!) said (somewhat sarcastically in my opinion Grin) "why do you think I wear thongs mum?".

So my downside of getting fitter is the need to purchase some thongs rather than granny pants!

Anyone else discovered their own downside? Grin

Figuring our if it’s worth blow drying my hair in between gym sessions.

FATEdestiny · 29/03/2019 08:09

Fitting in all the mundane stuff I used to do in my child-free time (like grocery shopping, meeting friends, ironing) when most of my child-free time is spent running.

Also, above compounded by the fact that DH is also a runner. So discussing every weekend how we will each fit our long runs in when we also have 4 children and their football matches / swimming galas / netball training / Guide camps or whatever.

Being a Runner + Having a Family
= Logistical nightmare fitting it all in

DirtyDennis I swim every day and was ruining my hair until I started wearing a swimming cap. I have a whole collection of them now, I get PU coated ones from Amazon, they're cheap and come in lots of colours. Totally get the stinking of chlorine thing too, though I've stopped noticing it now until I get in a hot bath at home and the stench of it rises up like a cloud.

My downside would probably be how often I have to replace things - I had no idea how fast elastine degrades when it's in constant use, and wearing a pair of trainers out in three months gets expensive too

sar302 · 29/03/2019 14:04

@Gwenhwyfar My son has just started nursery and I'm still vaguely trying to make a good impression. It won't last much longer though, else we won't be able to afford nursery and the water bills Grin

On the theme of washing ....

I take my ddogs running with me and now they are super fit and need runs everyday, even if I don't
Ditto washing clothes, and washing two dogs... Many days I get up and wrangle two dogs out, run, come home wrangle two dogs up to Bath, bath them, dry them, then clean bathroom, then put towels etc in wash then finally get a shower myself.

LuckyLuckyWoman · 29/03/2019 15:46

Today I was told I look stylish. That's because I wasn't in either my work uniform or gym gear, which is what I'm usually wearing:)

I've removed lots of clothes that don't get worn out of my wardrobe to make room for all my running gear. I buy fancy running leggings way too often:)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/03/2019 16:16

Magazine article: running is a totally free hobby, just throw on a pair of trainers and hit the road....

Actual reality: trainers £100+, running kit x several days worth x different weather conditions £100s, entry into races £50 each time, additional training to solve bendy legs and other ailments £100, electrolyte supplements, physio appointments, Spotify membership for tunes on the go, hi viz, running gloves, bone conduction headphones....

Basically, running costs a million pounds a year.

Plus an entire new skinny wardrobe, which although I'm not complaining is a pain in the ass when things you love fall off you.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/03/2019 16:19

Blobby I do that with the pony tail too, gather the top bit into one bobble, then the whole lot into another. Although I have found that gel plus a very fine comb nit comb plus a very high pony works too.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/03/2019 16:21

Can I also just add- feet. From the ankles up I have the lithe, toned, tanned body of a semi fit athlete yeah, ok, a lie but from the ankles down I have the deformed, crusty, dead-toed trotters of some fairytale goblin.

VanillaSugarr · 29/03/2019 16:23

I went to Body Combat this morning and went home to make myself a nice homemade ginger & carrot juice. I somehow stabbed myself in the knee when I was taking a knife out of the dishwasher and bled all over the kitchen. It was still bleeding an hour later so I had to go to the emergency minor injuries unit to get it stitched up. I have 3 bandages on my leg, I’ve sliced through a nerve and I cannot shower for 48 hours. Oh, and I have had to cancel Pilates for tomorrow. None of this would have happened if I’d stayed home watching TV and eating crisps.

The above is lighthearted but it goes to show how dangerous knives are and my heart goes out to all the victims of stabbings plus their families.

shitpark · 29/03/2019 20:08

Gosh Vanilla that should horrific, very bad luck indeed. Hope you recover soon. My first thought at that, is how long you'd have to abstain from training.

beela · 29/03/2019 20:15

Yes to the washing of clothes and hair.

Also - now I am fit I daren't take a week off exercise because I don't want to get unfit again!

VanillaSugarr · 29/03/2019 20:44

Well, shitpark I’m hoping to go back to yoga on Monday but it’s best to avoid working up a sweat if I can’t shower!

DH is laughing at me and can’t work out how I did it.

PinkBuffalo · 29/03/2019 21:54

That's sounds really painful vanilla! Be careful and take it easy

IRun4Me · 30/03/2019 07:24

Hope you recover quick Vanilla and goes to show exercise is bad.
Agree on the expense. It’s not just replacing things but you find you NEED different things. Different length running leggings and sleeves lengths for different weather. Also a warmer jacket and a lightweight jacket and reflective jacket for the dark, running lights for me, light up collar for the dog. Then obviously it’s got to coordinate so different colours.
I know that I could probably just have one set of running clothes ...,,,,,,, but Grin

BrassicaBabe · 30/03/2019 07:37

I had my colours done. I'll only wear running gear in my new colours. Which don't include black. Blush

As I've got fitter my blood pressure has lowered. I've got to be careful that I don't stand up too quickly. Otherwise I see stars and have to hang onto some something solid for a few moments. (Mentioned to practice nurse recently. They don't seem to care about low blood pressure)

Blobby10 · 30/03/2019 08:11

I only have black gym kit but my cycling kit is a total mishmash of colours depending on what’s in the sale 😂😂

PinkBuffalo · 30/03/2019 08:17

brassica low BP had always been an issue for me too! I hate that feeling like you're going to hit the flor unless you hang onto that something solid for dear life!
I've told my gym instructors, if I do go down to give me a few mins before panicking and calling an ambulance as I can't chat to anyone whilst it's happening!

VanillaSugarr · 30/03/2019 11:09

Thank you!

shitpark · 30/03/2019 12:01

No one tells you about the accessories you absolutely must have, hair bands, visors, running hats, running gloves, flip belt ( and discarded bum bags which I can not get rid of) running watches ( which you wear all the time) socks, running knickers, reflective vests, running belts with bottle holders for long runs.

shitpark · 30/03/2019 12:03

Recovery tights, compression socks and tights. Oh, and oversized hoodies so you can walk around in running kit and look cool

Gwenhwyfar · 30/03/2019 12:30

Sounds like it's cheaper to join a gym and go on the treadmill.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/03/2019 12:34

"(Mentioned to practice nurse recently. They don't seem to care about low blood pressure)"

As far as I understand it, low blood pressure isn't treated in the UK, but it is in some other countries.

BrassicaBabe · 30/03/2019 13:05

Pink I'm glad it's not just me. I feel a bit of a freak. In the winter when you add an open fire and a glass of wine to the mix is even worse.

I guess if I fall over and bang my head Gwen then they'll have to treat me too Grin

If we're talking running spending, then I really want some sunglasses that don't make me look like a knobber Grin I just can't see myself in those mirrored wrap things....
