I managed 600m tonight. I could have gone on but didn’t want to overuse my frozen shoulder. I’ve discovered I can do a sort of one armed crawl/doggy paddle which works quite well. Really enjoyed it too.

lljkk · 07/05/2019 22:16

Well done BiW :).

Tiny drop of WAShing up liquid in goggles... HOW does it not get in your eyes & sting hell out of them? I am not brave enough to try it. How tiny is tiny?

Boffing · 07/05/2019 22:35

Swimming makes me so hungry. Does anyone else have this?

lljkk · 07/05/2019 22:38

I have figured out that 50 minutes of swimming leaves me hungrier than 50 minutes of running which makes me hugely hungrier than 50 minutes of walking, cycling or kayaking. During exertion, running feels the most exhausting, mind.

tizwozliz · 08/05/2019 06:59

You rinse the washing up liquid off again, lljkk

Swimming making you hungry is a body temperature thing, iirc.

Llareggub · 08/05/2019 07:32

Oooh! This is just the thread I have been looking for.

Ex club swimmer, just got back into it. Promise myself a set of 40 lengths will be followed by a sauna, which I love. At the moment can only make it once a week, but I'm working on that.

My Fitbit counts everything, love it.

TriSkiRun99 · 09/05/2019 09:50

I wonder boffing if swimming makes us hungry because we’ve dehydrated? I find I don’t notice needing a drink as much as other sports but I do need it. I’ve started having a water bottle pool side and sipping it every 10L and it’s really reduced the hungry feeling after a swim....and I’m always hungry normally!

Welcome new folk it’s always interesting to hear what others are upto in the pool Smile I’m hoping to make the ladies training session tonight but I’m on a 12-13hr work day and will only get back 30mins before the session starts, yet I know it will do me good after sitting down on a train for hours but I’ll be weary.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 09/05/2019 17:14

Can someone explain to me how and why you use pull buoys?

MzHz · 09/05/2019 17:23

Diving in again as I saw it on the active (name changed H-iss-y)

Pullbuoys are used to help you focus on your arms, gets your legs up so you’re more streamlined so know what to aim for to swim better and faster.

You can use them with paddles to add strengthening training to your sets

Have a look on YouTube for pullbuoy drills and I dare say there should be quite a lot of stuff to work out what will suit you best

They take a while to get used to, once your core is strong enough it gets easier

MzHz · 09/05/2019 17:26

My treat this week for a post shitty meeting day was to hire a lane to myself for an hour.

Ahh the peace and serenity of knowing that nobody was going to suddenly pop into my lane or clash with my backstroke!

Got a nice and useful 2k done

BestIsWest · 09/05/2019 17:38

Hello H- MzHz!

I managed 1k today which I am over the moon about. It took me about 40 minutes but I don’t care!
For the last 30 lengths I had a lane to myself. Didn’t really want to get out but could feel my shoulder aching a bit.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 09/05/2019 21:46

Thanks MzHz - so it's just like a float that your legs are attached to?

Can I also ask about shoulders please? I've noticed a few people complaining about theirs... I've been doing 1k 3-4 times a week for a few months now and my shoulder is hurting today - I also use a laptop quite frequently. But wondering if it's the swimming? Is this likely? If so how do you stop it?

MzHz · 09/05/2019 23:33

Shoulder... that’ll be technique - front crawl right?

Pull shallow, pull straight- engage the core and make sure you rotate so that the shoulder position is within the normal range

I’ve faffed about with my stroke recently and pinched the shoulder- one session at the physio and a little bit of care with position and it’s fixed

Do not ignore shoulder pain!

Best! Nice swim! Well done

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 10/05/2019 17:03

Thank you Mz / yes front crawl.
Will try those tips! gave it a rest today & have been stretching.

Just read this and the "loaf & lunge" made me laugh:

MzHz · 10/05/2019 20:01

Ah! One of my lot at masters talked about this last night! Thanks so much!!! Will read now!

TriSkiRun99 · 10/05/2019 20:29

Waves at MzHz remembers from previous thread.

Made my swim session last night, I was shattered and we ended up doing drills and a timed 300m as a few of us are prepping for a Tri coming up soon, so was utterly zonked afterwards but glad I’d made myself go. I’ve always swam alone but I’m enjoying these ladies swim fit sessions but missed not diving this week Grin

MzHz · 10/05/2019 21:13

Our coach sprang the timed 800 on us last Sunday

We had over 700m of paddles too last night, my arms!!

MzHz · 10/05/2019 21:14

to you TriSkiRun :)

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 10/05/2019 22:04

Best 1k always takes me about 40 mins! Feels good anyway Grin🙌

BestIsWest · 10/05/2019 22:30

Yay smiles, google reckons it should take me 20 minutes! Unlikely!

TriSkiRun99 · 11/05/2019 12:21

Best ignore google and do what feels good for you! Mine is 35mins on average if I really went for on a gday 30mins, it’s all completely relative. I’m middle aged, short and dumpy so not all aerodynamic shaped 😂but I enjoy the relaxed clear mind feeling swimming gives me. I’ve only had to time myself because I needed a swim time for an event next week normally I’m not that fussed as I know from watching my daughter at swim club that it takes months and months of training 3-4x a week to knock 5-10secs of a 50m Swim. Smile

BestIsWest · 11/05/2019 22:05

You’ve made me feel much better! I’m amazed that I can swim that far frankly when I’m out of puff going up a few flights of stairs.

BestIsWest · 11/05/2019 22:10

Look at this pool at the Hearst Mansion in California. Having a little bit of a fantasy about doing backstroke in it.

Swimming for fitness (part 4). Everyone welcome.
